New Year, New Program 🎉 It’s been a dream of ours for a long time to provide more equitable access to mental health resources for the youth and families we serve… Our prayer was answered with our brand new partnership with Pepperdine University’s (@pepperdine) MFT graduate program! 🧡🌊We will have two Mental Health Trainees that will complete their hours onsite at James Storehouse. They will assist families in a variety of ways at our new Youth & Family Center including our Sensory Gym visitations, milieu therapy in our Teaching Kitchen, leading workshops, and providing one-on-one care for our youth and staff. It’s their first week of training this week - we’re so excited!! Today she picked out all the items for her new room in the home and she moves in tomorrow! We can’t wait! 🎉 We met this young woman when she picked up her debit card for VC Thrive at James Storehouse a few weeks ago. She shared she was between housing arrangements and couldn’t afford rent anywhere despite having a full time job. She was planning on spending the holidays living in her car. We got to tell her that we had an open room in our home and we would love for her to apply! Just a few weeks later, she completed the whole application process and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome her home! It’s been MIRACULOUS to see Thanksgiving meal baskets come in right when we need them the past few weeks! 🍁 🦃 Just yesterday, we were down to only 12 baskets left with 200+ requests for pick up already scheduled. By the end of the day, the room was overflowing with newly donated Thanksgiving baskets again!! The magic in the air was incredible! By Thanksgiving next week, we will have served approximately 500 local foster families, youth aging out, reunified families, and families considered at-risk of removal (usually due to poverty) with the opportunity to gather around the table and create a special holiday memory no matter what their family looks like this year. In fact, a former foster youth shared with us how much these things matter… often as a child he said felt very alone, especially during the holidays, but knowing organizations like James Storehouse care about him during the holiday season made him feel seen and not forgotten. ♥️🥲 This is our WHY! Yesterday I took my foster child to the Back to School event at @jamesstorehouse It was such a great event! They were incredibly generous to the youth. An emergency placement is when a resource (foster) parent receives an unexpected call to immediately bring a child into their home. This was how the dream behind James Storehouse was born… to open a warehouse where essential items could be provided at no charge for children entering foster care, thus expediting their emergency placement into a safe and loving home, as well as eliminating the financial barriers for families willing to take in a child in crisis. Over a decade later, expediting emergency placements into safe homes is still a primary objective of ours! “Baby Boy” pictured above was only a few days old when his current foster mom received the unexpected call to pick him up at the hospital. She immediately called James Storehouse and came in this week to get all the items needed to ensure his safe and loving care. We are happy to report Baby Boy’s biological brother was already placed in this home as well, meaning siblings get to stay together! We are always happy to step in to serve a family who says “Yes” to a child entering their home. Elizabeth Crisp (B.A. in Communications minor French ’23) recently started a full-time position as a Donations Manager and Community Relations Representative at James Storehouse. During undergrad she originally started as an intern at James Storehouse where she specialized in event planning and donor relations. One thing she loves about her current position is that it allows her to manage the team of volunteers and speak at public events on behalf of the nonprofit. Advice she has for current students aspiring to work in nonprofits is: “learn as much as you can about the mission and vision of the organization and select a cause that speaks to you.”

Did you know that around ⅔ of children in foster care are removed due to neglect? Of this percentage, poverty is often a primary contributor. This means that children can be removed simply because loving parents are under-resourced. However, with extra support, families can stay together and less children will be removed! This is called foster care prevention. In 2022, 57% of the families we served were those identified by social workers as at-risk of removal. By supporting these families, we have seen a major decrease of children in foster care in our county over the years! In fact, this little girl above will get to stay in her home with her family due to the support they have received at James Storehouse, but without essential resources like clothing and food, it is likely that this family would have been separated. Today, one less child entered foster care! Purposeful Parenting is a support group and life skills class for all expecting or young parents (ages teen - 23 years) working with a social worker. All of these parents have spent time in the system or are identified as at-risk, yet despite their hardships, they are incredible parents! We have professional guest speakers, practical life skills, and seasonal events throughout the year to provide parent education and a safe place to belong for these young parents and their children. Some of our recent speakers have included: a Moorpark College Admissions Counselor (Professor Kellie Porto-Garcia), CKO kickboxing owner and instructor teaching self defense (Nikki Lian), two inspirational mothers speaking on the obstacles they overcame in their lives (Michelle Garcia and Melissa Moore), a Child Development professor (Dr. Adria Taha-Resnick), and a nurse providing free health screenings live at the meetings (LVN Karla Ludwig). The specialty insight each of these professionals provide has been incredible! Today we had the special privilege to present Gage with a vehicle of his own! He’s an engaging, worthy young man! Gage had to quit his former job because he didn’t have reliable transportation. He’s been walking, riding his bike, or taking the bus to his job at Del Taco. This car will be a game changer for him because it will allow him to get to a higher paying, full time job. The bus route does not drive to that location, so Gage had to wait to take this new job. He will now be able to move to independent living because he has reliable transportation and a higher paying full time job! He gracefully processed with us how it can feel unfair comparing his life to other kids sometimes. Gage aged out of foster care so he doesn’t have parents to help him fund his first car like most other kids do. That’s why he was so excited someone was able to donate their car for him! He was beyond grateful! We have a trauma-informed, sensory integrated Playroom onsite at our Resource Center for any littles to play while their caregivers “shop” for free essentials. Children learn and heal by playing! Read a real story below: Both littles pictured above are in foster care… the little guy lives with his foster family and the little girl was just placed with an extended family member days before, known as a kinship home. The little girl was more nervous and quiet when she arrived, but it was so sweet to watch how she warmed up when these children met and started playing together! The little boy was telling silly jokes, showing her the toys, and even shared his rollie pollies with her that he found outside (see photo)! 😭🤍 Two kids, both in foster care, both with unique stories of their own, coming together and enjoying play… one helping another in the critical moments soon after being removed from her home. Massage therapy, art therapy, and flash tattoos are 3 more stations we host at Beautiful YOU to facilitate healthy expression and release of burdens for the girls in attendance. Massage: Professional therapists offer head and neck massages to help these girls release their physical pain and burdens that they may be carrying on their shoulders. Art: Art teachers encourage healthy expression through watercolor. Creating is both empowering and an opportunity to let go of one’s cares onto paper. Flash Tattoos: Women with the gift of spiritual mentoring host the flash tattoo station. Here each girl has the chance to write down their worries and place them in a jar while volunteers press golden, temporary tattoos onto their hands and arms. Many girls ask for prayer and emotional support at this station. This year we brought PUPPY LOVE to Beautiful YOU with the cutest emotional support dogs ever! It was precious to see the girls light up with the brightest smiles on their faces as they held the dogs while getting makeovers and trying on dresses. Many of the girls were able to soften and feel a little more comfortable in their own skin while holding the puppies as well. HAPPY NEWS AHEAD!! We’ve known sweet Anayeli ever since she started attending our Purposeful Parenting program as a teenager in 2019 (swipe for a pic) and we’ve had the privilege of watching her grow into an incredible young woman over the years since! She recently graduated from a medical assistant program, and last Friday she came to James Storehouse to pick out an outfit for her final interview for the job. (Isn’t she just beaming??🤩) We were overjoyed when she let us know that she got the job on the spot!! Today is officially her first day as a full-time medical assistant! Just amazing!! Anayeli has overcome so much adversity and resiliently chose a new path for her future and her childrens’ futures! We would love for you to celebrate with Chris as he joins the U.S. Air Force! Chris is an exceptional young man who we've gotten to know well over the years. After spending his childhood in foster care living in and out of homes and facilities, Chris aged out on his 18th birthday. Despite the challenges stacked against him, Chris has been resilient through it all! He is strong, determined, independent, and caring! In February of 2022 he joined Open Table, our mentorship program. Chris and his mentors met together for the first time sharing a meal and getting to know one another (see picture). Nearly exactly a year later, Chris and his mentors met for the final time as Chris officially signed his papers to join the U.S. Air Force last week! He was officially sworn in and leaves in a few weeks! We could not be more proud of Chris and the person he continually chooses to become! Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day 🫶 Sometimes the simplest act of kindness can mean the most. That could be scheduling time for a lunch date with a friend or co-worker 🥗, sending an uplifting text or email to someone you haven’t connected with in a while 💌, or spending a couple hours volunteering for a charity in your local area 🤝 Last week, some of our Morton team members volunteered at @jamesstorehouse, a community based non-profit located in Newbury Park, CA. This organization supports children in foster care and at-risk families in our local area by offering both physical and emotional support. Our team members helped organize prom dresses for James Storehouse’s upcoming “Beautiful You” event that will give young women the chance to dress up, have their makeup and hair done, and receive guidance around job interviews and career development. We look forward to accomplishing more together with this organization all year long. We recently had the opportunity to provide beds & dressers for a family who was SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR of a garage & stored their clothing in trash bags. In the words of their social worker Ana, “Since the family is very low income, they often have to choose between food/shelter and luxuries such as beds and dressers.
