A sort of bookish post... I just learned from @vixen.bookaddict that today marks the end of National Infertility Week and I too have experience with it. I was diagnosed with endometriosis at 19. I've had many laparoscopic surgeries to remove adhesions and cysts. I was told that while getting pregnant could cure it,or at least ease the symptoms, that it would be nearly impossible. After years of failed attempts with various Infertility treatments, we decided to adopt. We went through the foster care route. Our first foster child had just turned one and strangers would always comment about how much he looked like me! He was 2 when we adopted him, he was 3 when we found out I was pregnant and at 34 weeks, I gave birth to a tiny but healthy baby boy who has inherited my love of reading! Now my boys are 20 and 16 and my family is complete. This week is infertility awareness week. Infertility is such a confusing, mixed bag, emotional bomb field for me. I have heard people who have tried for a few months label themselves infertile. I have known people who have only had one child and not able to have more say they have infertility. I believe it is real. I believe it is true to each situation. The pressure, the anxiety, the disappointment and the anguish of feeling emptiness unlike any other. . . . But infertility to me, today, at this crossroads in my life is not how I define myself. No I have never successfully carried a child in my womb and accomplish that miraculous event of biological motherhood. I have been told I have not tried hard enough, explored answers deep enough, been fully capable enough and that must be the reason. No. It is true. And yet it is also not quite the period on the end of the sentence. I have many children. My family is crawling with them. I have been called mother by so many sweet lips that it is hard to say that I am infertile. . . . When I exam my own short comings as a woman I have no words on how to truly show the deep wounds buried beneath. My scars themselves show you I have been strong enough to endure the trauma of the womb. My heart hangs in tatters only visible to those who see with more than their eyes. And my soul, well, my soul is comprised of pristine shatter, held together only because each individual piece is falling apart. But being all together is not what I desire to be if it makes me less of a mom to my many children. Infertility. You are painful. You can also give new life. You are a obstacle. You are not the foundation of who I am. I am a mother. Despite you. I am a mother . . . . .

Thanks to the vision and generosity of Marin Foster Care Association, Resource Centers like ours are being planted in neighboring counties. Our Village Closet in Sonoma was first, then us, then Solano County Resource Family Association and next up San Francisco launching soon. The 5 Resource Centers collectively serve over 2,000 Bay Area youth in foster care! We meet monthly to share updates and ideas and learn effective strategies for best serving local foster children. I don’t have a home. Well, in the sense of brick and walls. Or in my case a trailer. I’m often resentful. I tend to get angry. I feel a pang of jealousy when my husband can carry on about the memories of home when we visit his stomping grounds in Kansas. But then I realize that I’ve never had a physical life long home with 4 walls and an address. My home has always been places, outdoor activities, people who loved me and believed in me along the way and items that remind me of special memories. Those are the things that have become home to me. Heck, even smells. My heart hurts but I also feel deep nostalgia when I smell sweet tobacco smoke. Or I think about my favorite youth group leaders everytime I eat good n plenty candy and how much those two changed my life. I guess I’m starting to realize home isn’t something with a roof. It’s all the moments, people, smells and places that mold us. At least for me. Yeah. That’s what my home is. This popped up on my timeline and had to share again. @alternativehumanesociety recently had a scare with one of their newest fosters, sweet Julie. Together with @bbvshbellingham, we consulted with the AHS vet team and got this little one feeling like herself again. We're so glad we were able to help Julie get a new start. Reading their website, I understood why - Moms Later is like a countrywide support group for parents over 35. I'd just turned 35 when we took in our first child; Jon a bit older. Hello from NOODLE 👋 FOR “Adoption” OR “Foster to Adoption” In LEEDS, West Yorkshire 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 **Noodle is DEAF** - MEET HER DOB - 10/05/2022 Noodle is a very gentle, happy girl who loves attention she likes to be stroked and she loves her cuddles. Noodle is fully house trained, she lets you know when she wants to go out into the garden. She currently lives with our resident dogs & cats happily Noodle walks well on the lead she likes to go walking in the woods nearby, busy roads can distract her because she is deaf. Noodle gets on great with other dogs when out walking (with sensible introductions) she plays & explores. Noodle loves her food and she loves to play with her treats throwing them about before eating them. She is not a greedy dog and can eat her food in the same room as the other resident dogs. Noodle has grown to love her toys and can share them with the residents dogs, they all play together Noodle is so friendly with everyone she meets, she has always been fantastic with children too. You will forget Noodle is deaf because this does not affect her at all, we love her dearly. With time, lots of love & patience she will show you what a beautiful companion dog she is, she is such a character. We would have adopted Noodle but our resident dog is very needy & we want only the best for her. Mom-to-be Pooka has settled into her new digs seamlessly! 🖤🤍 I got a call last night about a friendly stray pregnant cat needing help. 24 hours later, she is safe and comfy in Lil Moo’s Foster Room. Great launch! I left Portland with unforgettable memories, and many in the audience with copies of AFM, which I hope they will enjoy. It started with the book signing, continued with a Q&A, then a short reading, then more Q&A, then more signing. I am so thankful to Janeth Hernandez of @ooliganpress, who not only interviewed me but managed a million details, all the Oolies on and offsite who made it happen, and Tyler of @bishopandwilde at Tin House, who hosted the launch in his warm, welcoming space. PS. Our LA launch is scheduled for June 14 at @booksoup on Sunset, and there will be other book-related events before and after. Stay tuned!
