Byard Landcaster, It's Not Up To Us. This record was on my radar but just barely. I had heard friends talk about this record quite a bit but never really looked for a copy as they were hard to find and pricey. When Superior Viaduct made this reissue I decided to grab a copy and it sat unplayed for a time before I finally gave it a spin. This is probably spin number 4 in the last ten days, so damn good. Not sure why I didn't believe everybody who insisted I would love this one, cuz man, oh man, do I love this record. Do yourself a favor and get this one, no matter what genre of jazz you are into, it's a phenomenal jazz record. I was super late to this party, I had it pegged all wrong as being a fusion record (Sonny Sharrock can also make or break a record for me, he makes this one for me), which it most certainly is not. Just hard driving hard bop with some post bop elements, and stellar musicianship. I need to listen to my friends more and as your friend, you should listen to me and go git one as soon as you can. Byard Lancaster - It's Not Up To Us (1968; 2023 Superior Viaduct re.) It felt like a long, long week, but this joyous record from #ByardLancaster is getting my mind right again. He's joined by #SonnySharrock, #JeromeHunter on bass, #KenoSpeller on congas, and #EricGravatt on drums. I don't have the mental energy to write about the music like it deserves, but suffice it to say it's absolutely beautiful sound that almost transcends the jazz tradition it comes out of. Byard and Sharrock have an ear for the "simpler" melodies like Albert Ayler, so there's nothing immediately challenging or overwhelming about this record. But the tunes just hook you, and they'll pull you in for listen after listen, revealing more and more depth each spin. Rich, resonant music that can feel like a healing force. Incredibly, this @superiorviaduct reissue is the first reissue of this record on vinyl. The #VortexRecords ogs are out of my reach, so I was stoked to see this in a store recently. It sounds really fantastic, high quality pressing, nice heavy glossy sleeve, totally worthy presentation of the music. GEMS FROM A GEM My last intermediate intensive I had the honor of inviting my West African Teacher growing up Jerome Hunter @larocquebey! 🙏🏽🙌🏽💙💙💙💙💙💙 This is what you would call “an Old School Man” from his morals to his steps, it all comes from Foundation, guidance and Love. He was correcting one of the students and said “you know where they let you get away with that? In the free classes” hahahaha My kind of humor 😎 And I know I correct my students but it’s refreshing to see others who care just as much, if not more than you. His abundance of truth makes me learn and laugh all at once. I know the dancers had such a blast. There was a moment at the end of the class when he told us to do the last part of a combo and every single one of us was smiling from ear to ear for no reason but enjoying the moment. He was the highlight of the intensive and I was able to regain that feeling I had in my youth that I miss so so much. Thank you so much for blessing us with an amazing class. Love You! I miss constantly learning. Teaching non stop, giving all my gems for years, it can be draining and feel like you have nothing left for yourself. Teachers like him are a reminder….there’s a lot more where that came from. My training from when I was a kid and teen still challenge me til this day. ☀️The sun is shining on a wonderful record this morning☀️ Harlem native Ahmed Abdullah was a member of the #sunra Archestra for many years and at 73 years old is still making music in 2020. “Life’s Force” recorded in 1979 is a wonderfully open set with an intimate “brass band “ feel via Ahmed’s trumpet and the French horn of Vincent Chancey. But I’m a sucker for a cello and Muneer Abdul Fatah brings some beautifully bowed layering to all of the tracks. It took me a while to recognize but Cal Massy’s Assunta gets blended into the ambient bliss of the opening opus “Eternal Spiraling Spirit” which could just as easily be the title of the whole set. New York jazz and Sun Ra connect all the musicians on the album and It’s an Lp thats not to tough to find with OG copies up on Discogs🤓. Ahmed also has a website💻. As the depressing nature of this year continues, we need to arm ourselves with all the good spirit and good music we can muster✊🏼.
