Lake Marian is beautiful and the most accessible of the many small, high, mountain-bound lakes in Fiordland. It is 700 metres above sea level and sits within a steep mountain-bound amphitheatre in the Darran Mountains, Fiordland. The most prominent surrounding peaks are Mount Lyttle (1,899 metres) and Mount Gunn (2,044 metres) to the northeast, Mount Christina (2,474 metres) to the southwest and Mount Crosscut (2,052 metres) and Mount Marian (2,102 metres) to the northwest. The surrounding mountains all have glaciers. A rockslide at its southeast end created the lake, which explains the shrubs and many rocks strewn around the shore amongst the grass. Although it is a popular location, there is plenty of room by the lake for a picnic, or you can easily walk in either direction around the lake's edge. Swimming is also an option, but take care if you are inclined to jump off the large rock to the left of the track entrance. The lake is particularly attractive on a sunny, calm day, with mountain reflections. But don't be put off if the weather is overcast. If you get the chance to do it on a beautiful Winter's day, then take it! Lake Marian Track is a half-day tramping track from Hollyford Road in Fiordland to Lake Marian. The start of the track is 1 km from Marian Camp. Although it is considered quite a tough walk, it has become very popular, as reflected in the large car park amongst the trees. The track starts with a swingbridge over the Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kā Tuka, then an easy, well-maintained 10-minute walk through beautiful forest to the fabulous boardwalk above the Marian Creek waterfalls. Anyone can do this part of the track; it is a great option with limited time. From there, it changes dramatically to a rough 90-minute to 2-hour tramping track. There are rocks, slips, tree roots, mud and some clambering, and a 400-metre climb to 700 metres above sea level. On the upside, it is a mostly beautiful rainforest. Massive rock slides have created some open areas with great views. At the end of the track, you reach beautiful Lake Marian, surrounded by the 2,000+ metre Darran Mountains. June 24-25 Wanaka —> Milford Sound We dropped Bo off in Queenstown to catch his flight north, took a short walk up a hill in Queenstown and headed down to Te Anau for the night. We drove to Milford Sounds the next morning for a cruise and then slowly made our way back to Te Anau to finish Lord of the Rings. TREK TO LAKE MARIAN . . Also known as the Hanging Lake. Recollecting the trek to Lake Marian in what I personally believe were challenging conditions for an inexperienced trekker like me. Rain was coming down in sheets. The path was slippery and scary ,at times. I found myself scrambling on all fours at times, and the thought to give up and return to the safety of my rental car was almost overwhelming. I found hidden mental resilience and conquered the conditions, and my fears. The view at the end of the hike was fascinating. Will I do this again? Lake Marian in all its spectacular glory 🏔️ This was still day 1 in Fiordland and we had heaps of daylight left after the cruise so we thought why not hit the trails? We managed to reach the alpine lake just before sunset and spent a solid hour enjoying the scenery before heading back down. LAKE MARIAN | This is what hiking dreams are made of. Just 1.5hrs walk into the hills for this hidden gem. We had a long drive to get there so ended up walking in the dark on the way in. But we woke to the most gorgeous sunrise and with the lake like a mirror. June 24-25 Wanaka —> Milford Sound We dropped Bo off in Queenstown to catch his flight north, took a short walk up a hill in Queenstown and headed down to Te Anau for the night. We drove to Milford Sounds the next morning for a cruise and then slowly made our way back to Te Anau to finish Lord of the Rings. Lake Marian adventures 🍄💦🌲🛶✨ After starting off at this magical little creek, we hiked up to the lake through trees & over roots with no idea what to expect at the top.
