Last week our members enjoyed an evening of celebration and whiskey tasting as we welcomed the three times Great Grand Nephew of Daniel O’Connell, Sir Maurice O’Connell to the Reform. Sir Maurice took us through the story of his O’Connell ancestors and his reconnection with a family business that has been importing spirits and luxuries since 1450. From an ancient Irish family in Derrynane, West Kerry, Daniel O’Connell (1775 - 1847 ) first came to London in 1796 to study law, before becoming a Member of Parliament in 1832, and an integral part of the Reform Club. Beloved by Irish Catholic Nationalists as ‘the Liberator’, he was a hugely influential figure in the history of Irish politics. He is known in particular for his role in securing Catholic emancipation in 1829 and for his lifelong campaign to repeal the union between Great Britain and Ireland. Daniel O’Connell was also at the forefront of British politics during an age of political reform when radical causes were very much on the agenda. The National Grid: Loafing in Embankment Gardens yesterday evening, it occurred to me that if you were to lay Cass Gilbert’s Woolworth Building on its side, and float it 3000 miles east of Manhattan, you might end up with something not unlike Alfred Waterhouse’s National Liberal Club, which was completed in 1887*. In the long tradition of vast headquarter buildings presaging the collapse of the parent organisation, the last ever Liberal government folded just 19 years later, but Gladstone’s boys did manage to leave an extraordinary memorial on the Whitehall skyline. Obviously, it has rather more ballrooms and bedrooms than today’s Liberal Democrats reasonably need, so it’s been sliced and diced internally over the years; Waterhouse created an extraordinarily brash/confident/vulgar series of public rooms clad in glazed terracotta tiling which, once seen, will haunt your dreams forever. If you do anything in London in some professional capacity, you will probably have attended a meeting or a drinks party at one of the NLC function rooms, and it is very regular filming location. The history of the building itself is remarkable; Wikipedia does a good enough job, but the names of Jeremy Thorpe and the not remotely dodgy “His Serene Holiness the Prince de Chabris” give the reader plenty to enjoy. And look out for Lord Birkenhead.
