A lot of my early CD collection came from buying ex-library music on eBay, so apologies for the decimated artwork 😂 I can’t be angry at their desecration: growing up, libraries were how I got to love a lot of the music I love today. As for Haitink’s Vaughan Williams - he makes the music exciting without making it melodramatic (Vaughan Williams needs a nudge, not a push). It is very clear that a large part of the audience is there for Mars and Jupiter alone. During the beautiful cello concerto, which is so Dvorak, the audience was fidgeting, coughing and once even dropping their metal water bottle (or it sounded like it) during the adagio. This was repeated time and again during the Planets once Jupiter was done. The RFH should really consider banning plastic glasses from the auditorium. And they clap inbetween movements totally devoid of the connection between them that sometimes requires a long pause and sometimes only a moment to flow into the next. The enjoyment of the music was very much reduced by these Netflix mob. Never again!

The last time I saw Seong-jin Cho perform was almost 8 years ago, at St John’s Smith Square. It was his London debut recital after winning the International Chopin Piano Competition. He played a selection of Chopin’s music. Since then his career has been on the rise and is very much in demand appearing all over the world. The Wall Street Journal has said ‘Cho is a master. He displayed an impressive variety of tonal colours and remarkable technique, dispatched with jaw dropping panache. He has something to say and communicated it well.’ I managed to grab a ticket to see him perform Beethoven at last night’s Southbank with the London Philharmonic Orchestra- Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 Never have I seen more Koreans gathered in one location that I did last evening. At one point in the ladies bathroom stall, I was the only non Korean. I do not dislike it but there was little that really excited me. Bruckner's 7th used to be my favourite but for some reason I had not listened to it perhaps for 10 years or more. Just bought the ticket on impulse and, oh, I was not disappointed. 5 French horns, 4 bass horns, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and a tuba. Brilliant roar in harmony. The best of all, however, was cellos opening the symphony. Goosebumps.

This experience was so magnificent it deserved its own post. Went to see Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King live in concert at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and choir and it was the very definition of EPIC. I had goosebumps from the very opening notes and words cannot justify just how magical it all was. Everything just hit 10 times harder and I sobbed 10 times harder. Also realised this was actually my first time seeing any LOTR on a big screen so that alone was glorious. Also was great fun galavanting round London dressed in our finest hobbit attire, much to the bemusement of Londoners going about their day - shoutout to the only other group out of 5000+ attendees that were also in cosplay. I’ve put a lot of effort into preparing for the concert, but it has felt like dreaming on a sunny cloud every day. Despite the demanding schedule, the warmth and care from the maestro, support from colleagues, and guidance from coaches have made it all worthwhile. I hope today’s performance is not only special for me but also for everyone in the audience. Just resting a little bit at home, reflecting on the wonderful days of listening to Mozart.
