Aloha from 9000 ft elevation! We only did a quarter of a mile down into the crater because going down was easy. Hiking back was challenging! Funny enough the Sliding sands trail at the summit of Haleakala has been one of the most kid friendly trails we have found in Maui! I also recommend Hosmer Grove! Wilder recently had a random day off from school. (No one tells you how many of these there will be!) We went out for breakfast and spent the rest of the day at the Maui Seaside Hotel! @mauiseaside is an excellent option for families on a budget who want to be centrally located with easy access to explore the rest of the island. What I love about this place is that it’s situated just 2.5 miles from the Kahului airport ($15 Uber). And they offer a day rate! Imagine having to check out of your resort/condo early, still needing to nap a toddler midday, and not flying out until the evening. Renting a day room allows your family to hop on a plane showered, happy, fed, and rested. The average day rate is $219-260 and allows you to stay from 9AM to 6PM. They tend to be pretty flexible if you need to stay later. 🤫 There’s no option to book the day rate online, you have to call and book over the phone. INSIDE TIP: As of now, all the best rooms face the pool. The rooms are very basic, but they are clean and provide a sufficient environment to nap and shower while older kids splash in the pool or play with lawn games outside. Located on the Kahului Harbor, you can sit and watch Hawaiian outrigger canoes and large cruise ships come in and out. While this doesn’t make for the best swimming conditions, the beach is still fun to explore. Also on property is @tantesislandcuisinemaui, open 7AM-8:30PM, where you can casually sip on a cold beer and try some local grindz. Across the street, you’ll find a Whole Foods and other places to grab some plane snacks. This modest hotel, which opened in 1956, was recently bought by @hilton. Major remodel begins in May 2024, and will then be re-branded as Maui Seaside Hotel Tapestry Collection by Hilton. Along with an update to all the rooms, there is talk of a new restaurant and bar. When asked if the same reasonable rates would apply, they told me, “We are hoping so. 🎄🌺 M A U I 2023 🌺🎄 10/10 recommend going to Hawaii during the holidays. It felt so good to be back in a place so special to us. We spent time with Grandma and Grandpa and had a wonderful time creating memories as a family. It was different to be back in Maui, almost four months after a fire devastated the island. Businesses were starting to reopen, tourism seemed back to its busy pace, and the vibe was warm, gracious, and welcoming. That being said, there’s a hole in the heart of Maui—a palpable sadness and somberness when referencing Lahaina and the catastrophic losses that happened this summer. Most of the destruction is fenced off, but you do get a good understanding of how much devastation the fires caused. It will be so many years before this area can be rebuilt, and it will never be the same. We are so grateful to have been able to return to this special place. We needed this time away, a chance to truly sink into life and have it slow down in a way only Maui can do. We all needed this time together. This business owner needed an actual vacation, which is so few and far between in this wild career and so very important. I needed to recharge my solar battery. I've found how much a little breaks in the long PNW winters are so good for me. I felt rested for the first time in a long time. Even though it’s our peak tourism season we are still able to enjoy some empty beaches on weekdays 3. Toddler beach life is it 🥰, as long as my husband is around to help wrangle the wild beach babies. Historic Front Street in Lahaina! This long street is bustling with shops, restaurants, and people! We didn’t make it up here on our last Maui trip but really enjoyed the vibe. There is also a courtyard with a GORGEOUS Banyan Tree. We read the sign later and it said don’t climb. Sorry for being rude to the tree earlier. 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ It was a HOT evening so we each enjoyed some delicious ice cream. I got Pineapple Dole whip 🥰🥰. We didn’t plan to do the Road to Hana since it’s a long time in the car with little ones, but when we got there and were greeted by a “Lot Full” sign for Twin Falls, the first hike / first stop, we kept going. We left Kihei at 7:30 and had arrived to the start of the Road to Hana well before 9am so we were so surprised it was full already!! We did stop for a coffee and pineapple on the side of the road on way in— which we don’t regret. While everyone was so disappointed that the stop and hike we planned was full, we were determined. Luckily, I had taken the Maui guidebook from our apartment and I was able to read about a waterfall after mile 11 that was 30 seconds off the road. The waterfall actually had signs that said no parking…. But Yolo… we went in. 😬😬 We walked along a short, muddy path and took a dip in the cold pool. I was too cold to fully dunk in but my entire family went underwater. Little fishes. The girls absolutely LOVED it. The kids were initially so disappointed that we missed the Twin Falls stop - but they really enjoyed yesterday’s adventure!! Sometimes the best days are unplanned. Have you done the Road to Hana? It’s about 41 miles and a beautiful, scenic and windy drive. We hope to do it when the kiddos are older. Tips for you: arrive EARLY. As we headed back around 10am, more cars were making the drive in, which meant less leisurely looking at the views and a lower chance to quickly stop at the side of the road. Also, locals do drive fast. And yes - the road is windy and has some blind curves but it didn’t freak me out as much as I was warned by everyone else about it. Such a fun day!! 🫶🌴🫶.

The most adventurous first full day on Maui! 🌴🌴 We woke up early because the time difference and had the loveliest time at the Iao Valley Monument shortly after we had breakfast. We were able to make reservations same day on the State Park website. We did a short hike (paved path and stairs, so easy for kids!) and also walked down to the river for a little dip. The girls LOVED walking over the rocks!! We had such a great morning here. Both girls asked to come back tomorrow! (We can’t, but it’s so amazing to see them so happy!!) The past two weeks in Hawaii with my family has me SO excited for this summer with Cooper and all the amazing adventures I will get to share with him! Haleakalā National Park or “The House of the Sun” Legend has it that Maui climbed to the top of Haleakala and captured the sun and agreed to release him in exchange for longer days on the islands. This was a terrific National park! We had never been before so ou r kids earned a new Jr. Ranger badge and then we enjoyed several little hikes. One of our favorite Maui activities is to go whale watching. The whales are most active from January to March and it’s seriously amazing to see them all! The humpback whales come to Maui to either mate or give birth and raise their little ones before migrating again. We always do excursions with @pacificwhalefoundation , but there are plenty of options on the island. And while in Lahaina, don’t miss the massive Banyan tree (one of the largest in the country). Maui: Garden of Eden Arboretum We ended up doing the Road to Hana and this was definitely a highlight. I wanted to stop here to see the rainbow eucalyptus which are beautiful. Maui: Makaluapuna Point Labyrinth Walk along the .5 mile RT trail along the end of the Kapalua Golf Course until the end. Go in the morning if you can because it gets very windy in the afternoon. Trail has lots of sharp rocks on it so keep an eye on littles.
