Not all elephant 'sanctuaries' are created equal! Whilst animal tourism has come in leaps and bounds in recent years in Phuket and dozens of domesticated elephants have been 'rescued' from hard labour and cruel tourism acts such as elephant rides, there are still MANY that are allowing elephant bathing, cuddling and intimate interactions which go against internationally recognised best practice for elephant sanctuaries, yet continue to be recognised and recommended online as 'ethical'. TRAVEL TIPS: Traveling with kids can be incredibly difficult! Here are some of my tips to help for a road trip. For reference our kiddos are 3.5 and 1.5 Many say to travel at night, however, we have found this not to be true for our kiddos. Instead we keep them entertained. Portable travel and game tables are amazing! Keeps them drop dropping their toys/tablets/activities! Pack easy to clean snacks for the car ride. We mostly use gold fish! We also use the Munchkin Snack Catcher cups. Have a change of clothes handy. We found out the hard way…. Tornado sirens going off and the suitcase of course was buried. If you are staying at an Air b&b look at the layout in advance. Most are not “toddler proofed” so a simple baby gate would be helpful! Another highly acclaimed stage show in Abu Dhabi this week (running through to 5 May) - Cirque du Soleil Crystal. Our verdict, good but not great. We've seen Cirque shows in Vegas before that we're simply breathtaking and flawless; Crystal seemed to lack that edge that makes them world class. There was somewhat of a storyline there, though Miss Z and I were confused (had to do some Googling). It was pretty, there were some impressive acrobatics and ice dancing at points, but there were small errors, at one point a technical difficulty stopped the show completely just as they were reaching a climatic point. And don't start me on the audience. Most in Abu Dhabi are no strangers now to spectacular shows coming to town, and Etihad Arena is an amazing, modern multi-use stadium. However, it seems many have taken such a place as too much of a privilege, turning up late, talking and crunching during the performance, seat pushing, letting kids run feral in intermission, standing and walking off early, etc etc. Have some respect for the setting and the impact on the performers! We hope anyone with tickets already gets a better show than we felt we got yesterday. Brutally honest opinion, if you want to see spectacular acrobatics that have you holding your breath, head to the neighbouring Big Top tent on Yas for @fontanashow. The seats aren't as comfy, but it's a more intimate setting and better value for money with your kids. Everything you’ve ever wanted in a Puglian retreat is right here at Masseria Mongio Dell’Elefante. 🇨🇦 Quebec City Adventures - Part 1 🇨🇦 Though caught between seasons, our Quebec City experience was nothing short of fantastic! Here’s a glimpse of our trip…too much for one post, so breaking into two! 🍁Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac: Embarked on a guided tour by a period-dressed local who spilled the beans about the opulent ballrooms, restaurants, and liquor that could break the bank. Be sure to explore outside the iconic hotel for panoramic views from the Dufferin Terrace or an adrenaline rush on the Toboggan Slide (winter only - we missed it by a couple weeks). Apparently, you can catch speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour! 🍁Rue du Petit-Champlain: Wandered the picture-perfect cobblestone street, adorned with quaint shops and restaurants. The pedestrian-only street is nestled at the base of the funicular, giving you easy access to both upper and lower Old Quebec. Our must-have souvenirs? Vibrant red Canada beanies and sweet treats from a local shop. 🍁Bus Rouge Tour: We hopped aboard the open-air double decker bus and naturally went straight for the top to get the best views! We cruised the streets of old and new Quebec City, soaking in the sights, admiring the gorgeous blend of French and British architecture, while gaining historic insights. The real highlight was watching Mannie spread smiles below and keeping spirits high with his cheerful waves. 🍁Musee de la Civilization: From wrestling nostalgia to hip hop beats, two temporary exhibits brought a blast from the past! Mannie got an intro to my favorite childhood pastime (watching World Wrestling Federation every Saturday morning) and learned a thing or two abut beatboxing, breakdancing, and all things hip-hop. 🍁Local Cuisine: Poutine, poutine, and more poutine! Seriously - we had it four times! Poutine is the ultimate comfort food: Yukon gold french fries topped with cheese curds then smothered in a brown gravy. We leveled up and indulged in poutine topped with steak and shrimp in a white shallot sauce. Divine! Let’s not forget about the French influence, as we had our fair share of crepes! 📍Elephant Nature Park - Chaing Mai, Thailand🐘 If you ever find yourself in Chiang Mai, be sure to check out Elephant Nature Park. ENP rescues elephants from logging and tourism industries in Northern Thailand and Myanmar. Many of the elephants arrive injured and/or traumatized. ENP provides a safe haven for them where they receive loving care and can hopefully learn to trust again ❤️ We visited in 2018 and it’s still one of our most memorable travel experiences. We got to help feed the elephants, walk around the grounds, learn about the different elephants, their dynamics, and their relationship with their mahout. We also watched them bathe in the river and then throw mud all over themselves 🐘💦 @lek_chailert established Elephant Nature Park in the 1990s and was recently awarded a Global Vision Award by @afarmedia for her work. With only two days left to go, we have spent €10.161 on food and grocery shopping. This also includes shampoos, mosquito spray,… €55 a day for our family of four. More of a third of our total budget goes to food🤯 I’ve established a list per country but may add some remarks first. 1 We rarely eat at food markets, so usually eat at restaurants twice or three times a day. You probably guessed that our hands and pockets are always filled with shells, sand, and rocks from our beach. But you probably didn’t know that they’re often filled with trash we find on the beach too. There is very rarely a piece of trash that we leave behind. We taught this to the BB’s when they were actual babies. Teaching by example and putting our money where our mouth is, so to speak. So much so that I recently had to cross-fit a car tire out of the ocean onto the rocky shore because they were worried that it would be pulled back into the ocean. Wieliczka Salt Mines Did you know that at one point in time, 50% of the Polish King’s income came from salt?! The salt mine in Wieliczka has over 300km of tunnels under the city. It’s massive! I can see how it produced SO much income!! @ We started with the Miner’s Tour, which was pretty unique. The tunnels were rugged and it was dark except for our headlamps. It gave us an idea of what it would’ve been like working in the mines. But, we didn’t see any of the carvings or the church that Wieliczka is famous for. So we went on a second tour, the Tourist Route. The difference between the 2 tour routes was mind blowing! They weren’t even comparable. The rock salt carvings & salt chandeliers were incredibly impressive. And the chapel alone was worth the whole tour. Plus, we were the last tour of the day so we ended up all by ourselves, it was amazing! I highly recommend both tours. The seemingly endless vermillion torii gates of the Fushimi-Inari shrine ⛩️ The main shrine dates from 1499, though the shrine was founded in 711AD and moved to this location on Mt Inari in 816. It’s not hard to see why it’s one of Kyoto’s, and in fact Japan’s, most visited sites - the scale of the shrine and the beauty of the pathways leading through the forest beneath the towering torii gates are otherworldly. The Everglades were amazing to visit! I’m glad we did the alligator and boat experience this time, but next time I’d love to explore the actual National Park. But this was a great end to our trip. This village was just a tuk tuk ride away from the town we stayed at (Panajachel) when we were at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. I read about their village, Santa Catarina Palopo, on-line and we were able to go check it out. Apparently they are a village of ~5,000 indigenous Kaqchikel Mayan people that over the years had not been able to sustain themselves by the traditional means of fishing and agriculture. So in 2016, they started a project called Pintando Santa Catarina Palopo to paint all 850 buildings to attract tourists. And it has worked! We walked around their village, not just the tourist part, and it was definitely poor. And we tried to buy as much as we could. Luckily I was needing my next few bottles of wine, so I bought them here. And funny enough a guy from the village hanging out at the store wasn't shy and asked my husband to buy him a drink too. Which he did. 🍻 Did you know that in Guatemala the women carry things on their head? I didn't realize it! Let me tell you how I am jinxed!! I have been selected for 3 international trips with Girlguiding and I have been on precisely none!!!!! The first was a trip to India when I was 18 but it clashed with my A-levels and I couldn’t go. The second was a district trip to Switzerland in July 2020 which was of course cancelled due to Covid and the third was a region trip to Nepal in 2021 which was also cancelled thanks to Covid. I feel like any international trip with me on is doomed! So when we decided to go to Switzerland, the one thing I wanted to do was visit the world centre, just in case I never get another chance (and maybe it will break the jinx). Our Chalet in Adelboden is mainly used by members of WAGGGS (which Pip and I are) but anyone can stay there so we booked a room for a night so that we could visit. It actually made me a little bit emotional walking up the driveway and looking round the house. Andy was relived as he’d imagined that we would be there with a Guide group but it turned out that there was only the 3 of us and another guest from Canada. Throwback to the time we ambitiously took our kids on a 4-mile active paddling trip to 2 caves, and George had to get towed back after being pushed around by the wind and having no help paddling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ace and I were long gone and had no clue what was happening with him and the younger boys, but I wouldn’t have been able to help because I didn’t know how. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward to June 2022, when we participated in the Paddle Leadership Academy and acquired the skills I could’ve used to help him during that trip. Since graduating, we’ve completed a rescue when a family capsized at camp and introduced several families to paddle sports. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The 4-day course is led by @annaclevesque with Mind Body Paddle, @gerryseavo with the Explore Kentucky Initiative, and @tnriverline programs staff. It’s an excellent program putting more BIPOC leaders on the water. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The PLA equipped us with skills, knowledge, confidence, and community. When it comes to our favourite family beach hotels we’re a little picky - as you’d expect. There’s got to be sea-facing rooms with balconies from which to drink in those wonderful watery hues, a restaurant serving seafood, and of course tranquil golden sands. La Maison d’Ete is a petite beach hotel on the beeezy north-east coast of tropical sunshine isle Mauritius. You get lovely service from the staff and a seafront terrace with sun-beds. Every room has an Indian Ocean view, as do both swimming pools. There’s fab snorkelling around the lagoon and reef, you can book a boat trip, and borrow bikes to explore the forested national park next door. Still just in absolute awe we were able to travel to Egypt and experience the amazing culture, history, food, and peoples. I am always at a loss when people ask my favorite place I’ve visited…but Egypt just may have quickly ascended to the top. 🫢 I’ve had a number of questions about our trip so going to answer a few frequent ones here! Q: How long did you spend there? A: 10 days, which felt like the perfect amount of time for a first visit to see a ton of major sites. Q: Did you feel safe? A: This is probably the most frequent question I’ve gotten! We felt 100% safe the entire time we were there. Egyptians are incredibly welcoming to families and we never had any moments of feeling unsafe. We also were with a guide from @realegypttours the entire time (more on this below). Q: Should we get a guide? A: While we don’t always travel with a guide, I HIGHLY recommend doing this in Egypt - there’s SO much history and symbolism everywhere you’d likely miss. We always had an Egyptologist with us from @realegypttours and it was absolutely incredible learning from them. Q: How was the food? Did you get sick? A: The food was incredible!! As vegetarians, we found plenty of delicious things to eat (though there’s plenty of meat for those who want it). The kids also loved all the breads, dips, and flavorful veggies and fruits (and fresh juices!). We took our normal travel precautions (no fresh veggies without a peel, always bottled water, no ice, etc.) and none of us got sick. What other questions do you have?
