Some highlights from a first successful mini-vacation with a baby to the Bahamas. Little Emira sure seemed to enjoy the beach even if she didn’t quite understand where she was just yet. Nassau was a great place to see how life would be traveling with a baby. An international trip but a short flight. Super Americanized but still laid back and chilled out. Luckily for us this girl was a great traveler! In a few weeks we head off on a considerably longer journey to the other side of the world, though. So hopefully she keeps up the good habits she learned on our little mini-vacation! Layover in Beijing 🇨🇳 highly recommended stopover when flying with a baby 👶✈️ our transit was handled by we flew with Southern airlines, who provided an overnight stay in a hotel invluding breakfast buffet free of charge 🤤 this allowed us to catch a bit of rest before taking our next flight to Tokyo the next day. Now that I have a little one my days of sleeping on a hard plastic bench (or on in the floor - too many times to count) in the airport are gone, I'm realising there will be many ways I'll have to adapt my travelling style now I have another to care for. About two weeks late to wishing Lucas happy 6 months! It was a whirlwind month between a trip to Taiwan, starting solids, and getting sick - he keeps us on our toes! Hiking in the South Downs 🌊 and seeing the beautiful Seven Sisters cliffs for the first time! ~ We took a bus to Cuckmere valley then walked through the Seven Sisters Country Park, descending into Eastbourne at Golden hour 🌄 ~ My legs are feeling it today, but it was so worth it. I can finally feel the strength returning to my body. Walking is so important to me for my physical and mental wellbeing, and one of the hardest challenges to face during pregnancy was the toll it took on my feet and stamina, forcing me to slow down. ~ Now, I'm so happy it is something I can enjoy with my daughter. We go for walks daily, and hopefully more longer hikes soon (until she's too big to carry!). For our first full (hot sweaty) day in Cartagena we took the free walking tour which was our first exposure to the walled Old Town (UNESCO) and showed us more of our own neighborhood where we were staying - Getsemani. Fortunately someone finally FINALLY agreed to wear her hat. The tour covered history from native populations, early colonial and slave trade times, more modern day independence and also things like sayings, food, and music particular to Cartagena. We also saw sloths and monkeys in the local park! After the tour, we grabbed a late lunch from a menu del dia. It’s common here for restaurants’ best deal to be a 2 course option of soup and then a choice of a protein with rice/beans/salad. The soup seems like an everything left in the kitchen sort of thing and has always been delicious. The colorful sidestreet restaurant we found was particularly delicious for the main course too. Wandered around, got some ice cream, and found the cowork which turned out to be a really cool setup in their convention center building. Cody got a haircut while A and I played in a corner park. Then we got dinner to go and ate on the rooftop patio of our hotel. After which it was time to retreat to our aircon for showers and some screechy rinsing of the tiny one before she turned into a pumpkin. #havebabywilltravel #toddlertravel
Travel day to Cartagena! Snagged the last of our fancy free breakfasts then grabbed an Uber to the airport. There are buses but they are long and slow and involve lots of mountains between here and there and ya no, I declared myself graduated from that nonsense 🤢. Cons of vacation time for travel (vs quitting & backpacking) is you are time limited. Pros is you have money coming in and feel better able to throw money at flights. Got to Cartagena and I don’t think Cody was ready for what 90° in February feels like. Wasn’t checkin yet but we stored our stuff and then I dragged us all to lunch. Paid a bit of a premium for one with aircon which seemed necessary for poor Cody’s shellshocked state (also helped out A who was otherwise sweating her way through an ergo nap) Post lunch I found a mall to keep us occupied until our room was ready, because again, 90° outside and sunny and also I’m still in jeans from Medellin. And we’re trying not to ride in cars sans car seat, so the cheap taxis are not an option, meaning a 15 minute walk to the mall was already 🥵 Anyway, the mall was fine. We made it back to our hotel to check in. Also fine. Found a cool spot for dinner by which time I was out of energy. Thankfully it was cooling off and Cody’s energy was back so he could chase A while I slumped in a chair. Teamwork y’all. #slowishtravel #havebabywilltravel #toddlertravels

The other notable part of our daylong tour was to Guatape, a small town about 2 hours from Medellin. The town is known for its painted raised images on the facades of its colorful buildings. Sadly we only had an hour to explore here. I would have loved to spend half a day looking at the buildings and exploring the town. Plus poor Amelia only got 10 minutes or so at the lakefront playground. I can totally see how some people choose to spend the night here. Good news is we never missed the bus even with a baby! The tour guide totally wasn’t expecting A. When the bus came to pick us up, the tour guide popped out and goes ‘it’s a baby.’ And then proceeded to say this at least 7 more times to no one in particular as he got us settled on the bus. 😂Thankfully she was an A+ tour guest that day. We did it! Last day in Medellin we took a full day tour that included a stop at this rock overlooking a lake. Someone decided the rock needed 700+ stairs to the top and I made it with A! Cody climbed behind to make sure we didn’t tumble down and then carried her down because my grouchy knees don’t like going down steps very much. Easier than I thought it was be and a good view. Breakfast! In hindsight I wish I’d taken daily pictures of our breakfast. Ten days of no repeats and 9/10 were top notch delicious. Latte or americano. Sometimes juice. First course diced fruit and musli and some sort of blended yogurt (fruits and yogurts varied daily). Second course some variety of eggs/bread/tomato/cheese/arepa. Once it was a less sweet pancake. Once it was avocado toast with eggs. Omelet. Over easy eggs. Ham scramble. Chorizo scramble. Tomatoes always super sweet. We brought Amelia’s chair down to put on the bench with us. She ate very little but at least she was contained in a way that joined us to chat. Usually we brought her grapes or blueberries from the grocery that she ate. Mostly she was delightful. Once she wailed and spilled my coffee and had to be taken outside which is of course not pictured and still a pretty good track record. Absolutely would recommend the The Somos Flats Poblado. Heading inland past roadside coconut stands for the final stretch of our Mexican adventure after a dreamlike time checking out the Riviera Maya. Indisputably busy (due to being so beautiful) but quiet spots still to be found. Highlights include Mayan ruin exploration, museo de Frida Kahol, being one of the first people in Mexico to see the sunrise on Isla Mujeres, Playa Norte sunset swimming, taco and tequila testing and of course Iguana spotting. Friday I decided we needed a chill day. A week of exploring a new country is a lot for anyone, let alone a 1.5 year old. We hung out in the room for a Raffi dance party, did bubbles on our balcony, and took the laundry to the coolest place that was a combo coffeeshop and laundry service. While our clothes washed, we got to color, sing songs, and eat an obnoxiously glittery cookie (not my choice at 9 am but I told her she could pick) Lunch of leftovers and fruit at home, nap on the couch, then found a nice plaza where we could do play dough on a coffee table outside in the shade. Ended the afternoon on a walk that involved enormously more than necessary amounts of escalator rides followed by scouting out dinner - a burger & fries place where we then got their amazing ice cream. Then rounded the day out with an adorable game of chase. Slow travel/ long trips have taught me the importance of planning in chill/familiar/laundry days and it’s proving ever more important with a toddler. Traveling at all altitudes comes with the territory when you’re the cruising kid! 🚢✈️I’m 6 months old and I’ve already been on 10 airplane rides! My parents would tell you that since my first plane ride when I was 10 weeks old, and my last plane ride when I was 6 months old, my needs have changed a little bit. Here are a few needs that I’m seeing necessary as a 6 month old cruising kid! Naturally, they are all on theme! [X] A cozy blanket is necessary for air travel! Whether I need extra warmth in the jet bridge on a cold day, or if we need extra privacy while I snack on the plane, it’s a must have item. [X] A teether is of course a necessity for my 6 month self! I already have one tooth and working on another one! We usually bring 5+ with us in case they hit the ground, but I sure love this airplane one! [X] I’m throwing this board book into my necessities list for funsies because it is so fitting. For all our adventures, we usually bring a few books so we can follow our at home nighttime routine on the go. This board book also keeps me busy on the plane, I love to hit the pages and chew on the sides! 😋 [X] Comfy zipped jammies are a must-have. Keeping comfortable is a priority! A rocky start to the first workday but we recovered well We all got up and dressed and breakfasted for the walk to wework because I’ll be using it on the days Cody isn’t so we wanted to make sure we both knew how to access. Made it in and thought everything was straightforward so the girls left for the day’s adventures. 20 minutes walking later, I get a text from Cody that he forgot his headphones in the room. The room is another 10 minutes walking on the other side of the wework. I have the only hotel key. Sooo Back we go to fetch the headphones because without them he can’t attend the meetings he has for the day. So that’s 30 minutes back to the room, 10 minutes back to the wework, and then we set off again an hour later from the same spot 😂😮💨 Things went better from there. We went back to the mall from yesterday in search of a ball and a small work bag for me. Someone fell asleep on the way and had a lovely long nap. By the time she woke up, mama was ready for a snack and we found this amazing coffee shop with a play area. What started as a snack break turned into an hour and a half of playtime. When we wore out of playtime, I scooped her up for a bit of shopping. Knocked out our list, rode lots of escalators up and down, watched some puppies, and then she was ready for more wiggles so we went to the mall’s baby play area where we had the place to ourselves for most of the time and then a mama with another little girl joined and we played together. By this point it was almost 4:00! So we headed back home, snagging a mini nap along the way before meeting up with Cody for dinner. Yay for being used to cars, trucks, and the occasional siren. First full day in Medellin and I don’t think the universe could have made it any better designed for Amelia. Our hotel came with a lovely two course breakfast downstairs. She didn’t eat anything but she did get to play on the rock patio next to it so that’s gotta count for something. The main road through the neighborhood shuts down Sunday for people to walk/bike so we got to stroll along with everyone getting in their steps. Lots of people (and puppies) to wave at. Got to a large super nice mall that had a zumba class happening. Dancing was done by all. She got to have a snuggly nap while we got our local SIM cards. Food court had tons of tasty options including corn on the cob, all with an open air view of the city. Strolling the mall was also a great opportunity for Amelia to practice her “two three go!” They have a special (massive) feature exhibit for dogs this month. When I say amelia waved at more than 100 dogs yesterday, I’m not exaggerating. What luck! 🐾 #havebabywilltravel #toddlertravel #backpackingwithkids
