In the labyrinthine backstreets just a stone’s throw from the chaotic fervor of Sydney Road, a ghost lingers. Not the kind that wails in the dead of night, but one wrought from lead paint, bearing the name P.J. DOYLE PRODUCE, WOOD & COAL MERCHANT. This sign, a relic hiding in the shadows, escaped my usually sharp gaze, revealing itself only after a hundred aimless wanderings—a spectre from a past life whispering tales of wood, coal and the Irish blood that once fuelled the streets of Melbourne. Patrick John Doyle, an Irish expatriate born in 1859, landed on the rugged shores of Australia at the tender age of four. His youth unfolded in places like Port Fairy and Taradale. Eventually, he surfaced in Melbourne, joining forces with John M’Namara to peddle produce out of Flinders-lane, in the belly of the beast. Doyle was a dynamo, a force of nature, his enterprise sprawling across the city to King Street (his DOYLE FREE STORES now house @centrefoldloungemelb ), Fitzroy’s Brunswick Street and here on Sydney Road. Fast forward to 1906, The Age spills ink on a curious incident involving one Peter Daniel Doyle—employee, relative or some distant connection—whose leg met the business end of a rogue horse’s hoof. Iron met flesh in a cruel ballet, leaving Peter with a shattered leg and, perhaps, the keys to the kingdom. A year later, P.J. steps down, and P.D. steps up. Accident or ascension? Who’s to say? The elder Doyle, a titan among the Irish in Melbourne, cultivated a garden in Parkville that bloomed like Eden’s own. He finally kicked the bucket in 1942 at the ripe age of 83, while Peter—presumably still limping—had continued the legacy, biting the dust the same year, albeit a decade his senior’s junior. And so, the sign remains, a 130-year-old sentinel watching over the comings and goings behind @snapfitness.brunswick . It’s more than just a marker; it’s a portal to a past era, standing defiantly against the modern hustle, a reminder of the days when coal was king and produce was a princely pursuit. In the end, all that remains is this almost-obliterated emblem, a faded testament to the Doyle dynasty—part mystery, part history, all enigma.

🏛️🕊️ On this day, 9 May, we reflect on a historic moment in Melbourne, 1945. A captivating shot from VE Day at the Shrine of Remembrance, marking the triumphant Victory in Europe. Have you ever wondered what Brevard looked like years ago? Well here we have the Eau Gallie Bridge which was first constructed in 1925! This bridge is the precursor to what we know now as the Eau Gallie Causeway, which crosses the Indian River Lagoon and connects Melbourne with A1A. While the date of this picture is unknown, it was likely in the late 1920s or early 1930s #eaugalliebridge #eaugalliehistory #melbournehistory #floridahistory

1967. Customs officials were not happy as they checked luggage in this cargo shed at 32 South Wharf. A hundred passengers from the liner The Aramac queued up behind hastily set up trestles for the Customs check, or sat on waiting packing cases. The Aramac arrived from Japan early this morning. The cargo shed was littered with crates, piles of tyres and large sacks. “This is the first time passengers have been discharged into a cargo shed,” a Customs official said. “We certainly aren’t happy about it.” But the passengers were not complaining. “It did not occur to me we were in a cargo shed,” one said. A spokesman for the Harbor Trust said it was the usual practice to berth The Aramac at either South Wharf, Appleton Dock or Victoria Dock. He said The Aramac was a passenger-cargo ship carrying general cargo, and was berthed according to the needs of her cargo, not her passengers. Moonee Ponds in the 1920s: A Look Down Margaret Street Take a trip back in time and explore the charming Margaret Street in Moonee Ponds during the 1920s. One of the most noticeable differences you'll find is that Moore and Margaret Streets didn't originally connect! Back then, Margaret formed a T-intersection at Puckle Street. The Dalton Bros store, partly visible behind the car in this old photo, was demolished to create the current layout. Want some Moonee Ponds' history on your walls? We've got just the thing for you! 1991. V/Line turned the clock back 25 years when steam replaced diesel on the Melbourne-Geelong run. A restored R-class steam locomotive took to the rails again in the hands of two L-drivers. V/Line now has only eight steam locomotives, which are chartered out to historical societies or interest groups. And with regular drivers Bill Elmslie and Bob Evans approaching retirement age, diesel drivers Steve Deveson and John Armstrong are learning the ropes. For Mr Armstrong, it’s the chance of a lifetime. “We do it for the love of it,” he said. “It’s in our blood.” Mr Evans said drivers still rued the day the old steam trains went out of service. “We just love them,” he said. Then and Now: The Williamstown Timeball Tower Extension in 1970 (recoloured by us). What an odd sight! After its operational period until 1926, the Williamstown Timeball Tower underwent a peculiar transformation by 1934. A 30-foot brick extension, coated in aluminum paint, was added to double its height and emulate a lighthouse. Fortunately, in 1987, this unconventional addition was removed, and a computer-operated replica timeball was installed, dropping precisely at 1:00 pm each day. Report from proud agent @dbinks: #Repost @dbinks with @use.repost ・・・ Had a delightful Sunday *finally* getting to see ‘Garage Girls’ - the @threebirdstheatre and @theshifttheatre company story of Alice Anderson. Partly inspired by author I rep as @jacintadimase literary agent - Loretta Smith’s @hachetteaus non-fiction book; ‘A Spanner in the Works: The extraordinary story of Alice Anderson and Australia’s first all-girl garage’ - which came out in 2019 and is the definitive biography of this true, trailblazing historic figure. And the play does a magnificent job of further shining a headlight on Alice: 🚙 Meet Alice Anderson. Mechanic. Trailblazer. Entrepreneur. A rollicking ride through 1920s Melbourne! It’s 1920s Melbourne-the advent of the motorcar! Society reels from the aftermath of war and a second wave of Spanish flu wreaks havoc on the streets. Meanwhile, one small woman defies convention and makes her mark… ‘Garage Girls’ shines a light on Alice Anderson’s short but eventful life. Why did she drive her Austin all the way to Alice Springs? Who were all those women, dressed in greasy dungarees… and don’t they look a little bit like men? Sparked by historical events, with many colourful characters played by five actors – ‘Garage Girls’ is a rip-roaring ride celebrating a Victorian icon. 🚙🚙🚙 I took my mum and auntie along to the @lamamatheatre Courthouse and we all loved it - we particularly loved seeing *so many* high school’ers (maybe some uni students?) attending, because the @currencypress play is being studied on curriculum! The play does a truly wonderful job of condensing the highlights of Alice’s extraordinary life - her multitudes and magnitudes, imbued with Melbourne throughout, and leaving us with a palpable feeling that the engine of her life was turned over too soon. Tragically and mysteriously. Stroll through almost any neighbourhood—chances are you’ll stumble upon the run-down remnants of an old milk bar. Once community anchors, many now rust in silent obscurity, littering the same streets they once served. Take this forsaken husk squatting in the shadowy backstreets of Coburg. Here, the merciless Australian sun has all but erased the legacy of R. J. Gilmour, whose sign for GILMOUR’S MILK barely clings to existence. In the 1930s, Gilmour hawked his “Pure Milk from Guaranteed, Tested, Tubercular-Free Cows” under the promise of purity and health. 1932 saw two pivotal events in Sydney: The unveiling of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a steel arc straddling the bay, stretching boldly into the future. And the equally transformative opening of the first milk bar by Greek migrant Joachim Tavlaridis, setting the stage for immigrant dreams to Frankenstein into cultural food staples. Milk bars flourished under the hands of Greek, Italian, Chinese, and later Vietnamese and Indian proprietors. The long hours and endless grind were sweetened by the smiles and hearty greetings exchanged over counters by these entrepreneurs, strengthening their communities with every milkshake, spider and scoop of ice cream served. By the late ‘40s, these joints had evolved from Hollywood glamour into neon-lit cultural hubs clattering with the sounds of pinball, the mechanical cacophony replaced in the ‘80s by the electric bleeps of Pac-Man and Frogger. They were where young people gathered, chomping on burgers and fish & chips, their laughter mingling with the clinks of coins in jukeboxes and the fizz of Marchants and Tarax soft drinks. In the ‘50s, it seemed a milk bar stood on every Australian corner. Now, #milkbarmonday stirs up nostalgia for lolly counters and tales of Aussie kids’ sugar-fueled escapades into fledgling steps toward independence. These once-buzzing social nuclei have fallen prey to the savage tides of progress and economic shifts, leaving behind only the skeletal remains of a more communal, vibrant era. Desolate milk bars like this one stand, sagging monuments not just to a lost cultural epoch but to the ceaseless, often ruthless churn of societal evolution.

1951. This Hawthorn milkie reckons his work is great. Since Ireland’s dairy supplied 8,000 of its customers with these novel boxes he has walked many miles less a week. And the customer has found his bottles safe - and clean - in the morning. Each householder has a milk box fitted as near as possible to the street. The empties are placed outside the box on a ledge, which rises and shuts the lid as the milkie puts the full bottles in the box. . Something a little different that had been sitting in my head for ages, but I struggled to put the idea down on paper. For what seemed a simple idea, it took a lot more work in the end than I ever thought it would. . What was peppered throughout the mid century, suburban streets of Melbourne, and I guess the rest of Australia’s was the wonderful wrought iron security door peacock, also occasionally on front gates as well as driveway gate. Sadly, seen less and less these days and they would definitely make the list for highly endangered species. . As a kid, I think I always assumed it to be a lyrebird, being a native Australian bird as well as being on the back of the 10c etc. but a couple of years ago I mentioned that when I illustrated a mid century home which included a similar bird on the security door, and there were more than a few ornithologists out there that explained quite clearly to me why it was a peacock and not a lyrebird :) . When I was illustrating this, for some unknown reason, I couldn’t stop humming The Partridge Family intro song, I mean for days on end. The whole time knowing the animated birds on that show intro were partridges obviously, but the way this peacock looks back, the same way the mother partridge did in that intro… it was locked in, nothing on Spotify could get it out of my head that week… so I apologise in advance for those that know the tune, if I’ve now put an earworm in your head that you’ll now struggle to remove, but have a great weekend just the same:) . 1974. Some of the funniest comics in history came in pairs - Laurel and Hardy, Burns and Allen, Morecambe and Wise. But Cheech and Chong? Just who are Cheech and Chong? Cheech is Richard Marin, a Mexican, the son of a Los Angeles policeman. (Cheech is a Mexican nickname short for cheecharrone, a Mexican delicacy of deep-fried pork skins.) Chong is Tommy Chong, Chinese, the son of what his publicity describes as “an itinerant topless nightclub owner” from Vancouver. “Dad wasn’t topless,” explains Chong. “The club was. Dad hadn’t the build...” Their original comedy two albums have sold more than 2 1/2 million copies in two years, and their third “Los Cochinos”, is selling well across America. They have achieved this success by making the underground, counter-culture of modern youth, laugh at itself. They teamed up in Canada and starved quietly together until they moved to Los Angeles. A promoter heard them at a Hollywood club, and signed them up on the spot. Now they’re rich ... and funny. “I like being rich,” says Cheech. “Once I had to scrape up enough money to buy a tin of dog food to eat. “Now, hell, I can go out and buy five, six cases of it...” “He’s not kidding,” says Chong, “he did eat dog food...” How old are they? “Cheech is 27 and I’m 36. And, if you’ll believe that, I’ve got some beautiful land for sale in the desert...” PICTURED: U.S. comedians Cheech (left) and Chong. FROM THE ARCHIVES 📸: Piccolo Spoleto, 1987. Captured by Melbourne-based social documentary photographer, Angela Lynkushka. The Piccolo Spoleto Festival was a MAV (known as Multicultural Arts Victoria) project in 1987. Caption as recorded at the time: 1) Los Chicos - Latin American Comedy, 2) A production of “Cosi fan tutte” at Edinburgh Gardens, Fitzroy, 3) Huynh Thanh Thao, 4) Bokosa, African Rock Reggae, 5) The Manh Family Circus and 6) Ukrainian Folk Dance at Melbourne Town Hall. “The Piccolo Spoleto programme consisted of the work of artists from many different countries of origin, who have settled in Australia. We featured productions that were, in practice, multicultural works by virtue of the fact they involved artists of different ethnic origin working together. Piccolo Spoleto was as, for its participants and the public, an opportunity to gain insight into the nature of many cultures and the developing character of Australian society today.” As part of our new program RETROSPECTION, we are examining the past through the lens of time before we curate the future. Observing the various ways we have tried to capture the complicated identity markers of “multicultural” or “diversity” reflects the complexity of context to time and a culture that is never static. #melbournehistory #photographyarchive #flashbackfriday

#Onthisday in 1959 The Melbourne Age reported that a new airport would be established at Tullamarine. Here’s a view of the Airport’s proposed cocktail bar and lounge, Tavern Bar One, drawn by young architect Michael Jan for interior designer George Kral. It was part of a scheme for Aerojet Caterers. The final design of the Tavern Bar was luxurious with carved timber screens, purple sand-blasted timber lining boards, and a sculptural ceiling composed of copper-lined inverted cones, with concealed lighting. The lounge chairs designed by Kral were to have been upholstered in various deep colours but were replaced by leather and timber tub chairs manufactured by Sydney company, Framac Industries, and designed by Johan H Naess. Melbourne’s International Airport finally opened in July 1970. See today’s Age Editorial page for the original 1858 news article. Lurking in the greasy guts of a Preston laneway, just beyond the groovy 1970s “EVERITE MOTORS” sign, a lone grizzled gunslinger silently peers from the grime-stained bricks of this old garage. Oil spatters streak his outrageously oversized hat—more like a fifty-gallon monstrosity— like the arterial spray of a jalopy taken behind the shed and put out of its misery. His ludicrously large brim, shoved back to reveal a bristly moustache, conjures images of Yosemite Sam on a bad acid trip rather than any Clint Eastwood cool. This is Marshall Matt in his vintage form—the wild-eyed short arm of vehicular law, the very soul of roadside salvation. “Holler for a Marshall” was the desperate cry of wayward travelers, stranded at 3am on shadowy country roads, minds and eyes hazy from the evening’s bender in sawdust-covered saloons pouring VB like it was nectar of the gods. Born in the industrial roar of 1935 Sydney, Marshall Batteries has charged through the decades like a power-pack pugilist, giving the ‘ol right hook to drained dry cells. The battery-jumping mascot, Marshall Matt, once haunted the collective nightmares of motorists with dead batteries—their muttered incantations of ‘Holler for a Marshall!’ a dark ritual to summon salvation from the spectral cowboy. Catapulted into the digital age, Marshall Batteries has undergone a tech-fueled renaissance. A few fevered taps on your smartphone now conjure up the make-over apparition of Marshall Matt. The moustache is history, but his mission remains fuelled by the same manic energy: to electrify the dead, to cast light upon the darkest, loneliest roads, where the stranded whisper his name like a benediction. As we barrel into a future where electric hums drown out gasoline growls, Marshall Batteries just keeps on going. With each battery installed, each lifeless vehicle jolted back to life at the roadside, Marshall Matt rides again—a relentless spectre of resilience, his legacy not merely inked in history books but blasted across the airwaves, forever seared into the memories of every stranded soul who ever dared to holler for a Marshall.

🎥 📆 Our screening of the Lost City of Melbourne with a live introduction from director Gus Berger is tomorrow!! Berger’s film documents some of the many grand theatres, cinemas and buildings across ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ which were obliterated at the whim of shifting - and short-lived - tastes. Drawing on archival footage and photographs from the National Film and Sound Archive and the State Library of Victoria, as well as interviews with historians and experts, the film traverses lost pockets of the city which were sacrificed to the altar of the ‘modern’ from the 1950’s to 1970’s. The film will be screened in the beautifully restored Minerva Theatre, which debuted the invention of the cinematograph for Ballarat audiences in 1896 and functioned as a cinema for much of the 20th century. 🎞️ All funds raised from the screening support the work we do at the BMI. Please share with those you think might be interested! ❤️ 🙏 Click the link in our bio or head to our event listings on our website for more info on this and many more events coming up in May! Thank you to the Melba group for inviting us to talk about Her Place and our gender equity projects including the Feminist Reading Room and Finding Her. It was an honour to meet this inspiring group of women and learn more about Victoria’s rich history of Feminist activism. Special thanks to Jan Harper of Sugar and Snails press who donated items including a feminist pin designed by Fay Marles (first Commissioner for Equal Opportunity and Chancellor of Melbourne University) and to those who contributed several rare ltd edition books containing Victorian women’s stories to our Feminist Reading Room.

Chinatown tour commencing 18th May. The long awaited third component of the Melbourne Historical Crime Tours trilogy is commencing Saturday night the 18th of May and is now available for bookings. ‘Stories from Chinatown’ is a weekly Saturday night walking tour which starts at 7pm at the Exford Hotel, corner of Little Bourke and Russell streets, and finishes at 9pm at the corner of Little Bourke and Exhibition St. The tour covers Melbourne’s Chinatown from the 1850s to 1950s. Topics discussed include gambling, opium, sly grog, gangsters, and ladies of the night. A handheld projector is used to project photos of the characters discussed onto the buildings and laneways they once frequented, and photos of original police evidence such as gambling cards and Chinese lottery tickets onto the buildings from which they were confiscated 100+ years ago. Your host Michael Shelford has been going through the original police files at Public Record Office, Victoria, for over 15 years, and the narrative of the tour is based on the knowledge and understanding he has gained during this period. The trilogy covers the three main areas which drew police attention in Melbourne in the late 1800s and early 1900s: Fitzroy True Crime walking tour: Sundays 10.30am Gangsters, Brothels & Lolly Shops walking tour (Little Lon precinct): Saturdays 11am Stories from Chinatown walking tour: Saturdays 7pm Adults $50 Seniors, Concession $45 Children (Fitzroy & Chinatown only) $45 Bookings and information via www.melbournehistoricalcrimetours.com #chinatown #melbournechinatown #chinatownmelbourne #opium #gambling #melbournehistory #melbournetruecrime #michaelshelfordwriter #melbournehistoricalcrimetours #melbournecrimetours #exfordhotel #exfordhotelmelbourne #littlebourkest #fantan #pakapoo #thingstodoinmelbourne #melbournebucketlist #trilogy

1975. THE Victorian Rifle Association is holding its 100th Queen’s prize meeting at Williamstown during the Moomba Festival. And yesterday, sharp-shooting lady from Narrabri, in NSW, caused many a raised eye-brow when she scored 193 out of a possible 200 for the team’s event. Helen Griffiths, 21, right, uses a O Mark M44 rifle which has carried her to several victories, including top lady shooter at the recent New Zealand Queen’s Shoot. Helen has the distinction of being the only woman to be selected in an open NSW state team. Last year, she was awarded the 31st badge in a group of 900 mixed shooters in NSW. Helen has come a long way since her days of taking pot-shots at rabbits. She is the only woman member in the open NSW state team. Mrs Libby Felton, of Western Australia, was also using the South Australian-made M44 rifle. Mrs Felton said that with her husband Dave, a boatbuilder, she had won “a few” open championships. “Good on ya, Mum. Tip Top’s the One.” Peeling away like the crust of an old sandwich, this sign is a battered relic from the mid-20th century. It’s a survivor—kinda like my liver—hanging on by a thread in the face of urban decay and half-hearted graffiti removal efforts. This ghost from 1949 once flashed its yeasty smile at drivers speeding down Bell Street, luring them with the siren call of freshly baked bread. Tip Top: the loaf of the hour, the carb savior of post-war dinner tables. The bread hit the shelves the same year my dad—coolest daddy-o in the new atomic age—made his grand entrance. Born under the banner of George Weston Foods, a behemoth with roots tangled deep in Canada’s frostbitten soil, Tip Top gobbled up smaller bakeries like a hungry kid at a birthday party. From there, it spread its doughy empire across Australia and New Zealand like mold found in your kid’s lunchbox, thriving on a forgotten sandwich. Buried beneath the Tip Top tales, this building holds layers of forgotten lives. Squint against the glare of the afternoon sun, and you might catch the ghostly echo of ‘ESTATE AGENT’—a sign lingering like a stale crumb. It started life under the wing of Claude Bourk, real estate maestro of the mundane. Then came Ruby Jane Lewis and her hubby William, turning the space into a sugary den of confectionery delights from around 1940 till death did them part in ‘52. The signs likely got slapped on in the 60s, back when milk bars were the temples of teen’s getting hopped up on milk shakes and sugar highs. A glimpse of another era blurts out ‘ROAST CHICKENS’ and ‘FISH & CHIPS’ from the walls, a nod to its days as a greasy spoon sanctuary, serving up deep-fried flavour bombs and cholesterol in equal measure. Now, the building sits, hollowed out and empty, biding its time. The stories these walls could tell range from the tragic to the laughably absurd, stirring up a mix of nostalgia and existential dread. These signs, they’re like the croutons in the salad of our community—often overlooked, occasionally appreciated, but always there, quietly soaking up the dressing of life.

. Today just happens to be World Art Deco Day… so thought I’d put up, what was once, the United Kingdom Hotel located Clifton Hill here in Melbourne… unfortunately, its also on the top 10 list for one of the most ‘beautiful fast food restaurants in the world’. . As I obviously opted to illustrate it without all the restaurant branding that’s been there for over 30 years, I guess this only leaves it as just a beautiful, old, art deco building without another top 10 list to call home. . . . . . . . . . . #melbourneprint #lostmelbourne #vintagemelbourne #oldmelbourne #retromelbourne #classicmelbourne #historicalmelbourne #melbournehistory #worldartdecoday #melbourneart #melbourneprints #madeinmelbourne #melbournepubs #artdeco #melbourneartdeco #artdecohotels #artdecopubs #aussiepubs #melbournehotels #australianartdeco #melbournepubs #lostpubs #losthotels
