I feel bad about this one. It’s not what you think. I love Mike Pickering and I love Heather Smalls. I’m a glutton for the chunky soul house vibes on offer here. So why am I doing it? Spite? Snobbery? No. It’s here for two reasons: back in the 90s, this was the very model - through no fault of its own - of the kind of parochial nightclub vibes that were finally dying out. The kind of club where the DJ talks between songs, where Tracey very much dreams of Moving On Up to assistant manager level and Moving On Out of her parents’ house. Alright, I know that sounds like snobbery, but it’s the recollection of those awful evenings. The second problem is the curse of the Mercury Prize. Back then, the shortlist always featured a classical album and a jazz album in some tragic attempt to make it seem diverse. Very few winners ever went onto bigger and better things. Polly Harvey and Primal Scream perhaps. Many disappeared altogether. Speech Debelle anyone? Ms Dynamite? M People would soldier on, the spear of Mercury in their side, but never would they sound this fresh and vital again. This elegant even. Through no fault of its own, Elegant Slumming gets overlooked as a brilliant example of British dance music in the 90s. Dig in if you don’t know it. THE TUBE AT THE HAÇIENDA 40 years this week since leading TV music show, The Tube, took their cameras to The Haçienda. Although not billed on the ticket, it’s best remembered as Madonna’s UK TV debut, her first hit, ‘Holiday’, having just entered the chart, on its way to the top 3. I’d recently stopped DJing, but was there in my capacity as manager of Broken Glass (mis-spelt Breaking Glass here), who danced to ‘Reach For Love’, a new Factory recording by Marcel King. All the crew knew/knew of Marcel – everyone on the black side of Manchester did. He’d been the teenage lead singer of Sweet Sensation, who topped chart in 1974 with ‘Sad Sweet Dreamer’, but his star had faded and he was struggling with heroin addiction. New Order’s manager, Rob Gretton, heard he was sleeping rough in a car, and intervened. Bernard Sumner (New Order) and Donald Johnson (A Certain Ratio) produced ‘Reach For Love’, which passed by largely unnoticed here, but become a US Dance hit, remixed by Mark Kamins & Michael Brauer. Kamins DJ’d at New York’s Danceteria – later that year he’d become the first NY DJ to play The Haçienda. In 1982, he was instrumental in getting Madonna, then his girlfriend, her record deal with Sire, and he produced ‘Everybody’, her debut single. ‘Holiday’, produced by her then beau, Jellybean Benitez, launched her to superstardom. The Factory All-Stars combined members of various bands on the label, whilst the crack jazz dance crew, the Jazz Defektors (again mis-spelt), also performed. Norman Cook (then Quentin) came up from Brighton and stayed with Kermit, then of Broken Glass. With hindsight, there’d have been four people mingling backstage, then unknowns, who’d later have #1’s – Madonna, Mike Pickering (M People), Kermit (Black Grape) and Norman Cook (Beats International/Fatboy Slim), a fifth if you count Morrissey, who was interviewed on the balcony. ABC★UP そうか....1989年だったのか....。 ABC★★★が1989年に発表した5thアルバム。 ABC★★★と云えば、僕と同世代の方々同様1980年代初頭の “ニュー・ロマンティック” “ファンカラティーナ” “第二次ブリティッシュ･インベージョン”に載っかり大ブレイクした忘れ難きニューウェイヴ･グループの1つである。 当時中学生であった僕は彼等の「ルック･オブ･ラブ」の楽曲&収録1982年1stアルバムに完全ノックアウトされ、カルクラ、デュランx2なんかより圧倒的に思い入れがあったバンドであった。 3分30秒と云う短い尺なのにゴージャスサウンド&ジェットコースターに乗っているかのようなスリリングな展開が堪らない〈The Look of Love〉は、今でも時代を超越した大名曲だと思っている。 当時他にも数々の名曲を生み出したプロデューサーのトレバー･ホーンにとっても、この曲は自身の一世一代稀代奇跡の名曲として認識されているに違いない。 しかしそれから7年後リアルタイムで聴いたこの5thアルバムは、1st並みのインパクトエレガントさを期待した当時の多くのファンの方々と同様、かなり失望して一回聴いただけでCDをすぐに売っ払ってしまって以来今現在まで耳にする機会が無かった。 音がスカスカで均一ビート、かつての解り易いメロディーが無く難解。 昨年の夏終わり頃であっただろうか？、全く別のレコード探しでかなり久々西新宿を彷徨いた時に、まだ存在してたのね英国盤に強い重鎮ピンクのお店でかなり多量のABC★★★が刺さっていて感激！、店番のお姉様と会話が盛り上がり「昔からオーナーがABC★★★には特別な思い入れがあるんですよ」⇒ 勢いでこのアナログもゲット！。 本日レコード整理してたら出て来たのであまり期待せずにターンテーブルに。 約35年振りに耳にしたこのアルバム、カッコいいやん！。 てか、ハウスだったのね！、このサウンド、当時リアルタイムでは知らんかった解らんかった。 ハウス･ミュージックが大衆レベルに浸透して一般的に当たり前に聴かれるようになったのは、もう少し時代が後の1990年代前半で以降僕も普通にポップスとして耳にしていた。 先見の明が有り過ぎ！、このアルバムは制作発表が時代の要請よりも少し早過ぎたのだ。 今の耳で冷静に聴くと確かに楽曲のメロディーフックは確かに若干弱いのだが、元々ハウスのサウンドは引き算の美学で成り立っている要素もあるから、逆にベタベタだとおかしいしこのアルバムでは過剰になり過ぎないことでサウンドの “クールネス” を際立たせようとしているのが、今となっては少し解るような気がする。 しかしマーティン･フライ先生、あなたはたまに攻め過ぎてちょっと外してしまうことがありますね（笑）。 1stの後の2ndの時も1stとは真逆のボウイレッツダンスに感化されたかのようなノン･シンセ人力肉体サウンドに一気に方針転換し過ぎて多くの1stファンを失った過去があるのに（笑）。 しかし変化を恐れずにチャレンジする姿勢は凄い！ってか、未知のサウンドに挑戦するワクワク感の方が勝っていたのかも？。 取り敢えず本日35年振りに誤解が解け理解が進む機会が訪れた事に “音楽の神” 感謝〜（笑）。 ･ #abc #up #martinfry #markwhite #daveclayton #ritchieclose #mikepickering #robdean #mauricemichael #dannycummings #davidpalmer #philsmith #graemepark #alancarvell #lorenzajohnson #blaze #markstent #bobkraushaar #julianmendelsohn #dkb #designkb #paulcox #phonogram #house #acidhouse #garagehouse #alternativedance

Tonight there’s a massive all-star party at the Warehouse Project @whp in Manchester called The Hacienda Returns, celebrating the legendary nightclub and many of the brilliant DJs that made it one of the finest clubs in the world. The @whp party sold out long ago, just as it should, so I’m afraid it’s too late to join that party now. I don’t often post pics of me on here, because I’m usually behind the lens, but this week when I was scanning photos of the first i-D @i_d party at the Hacienda in MCR in 1986 I came across this shot of me taking a leap into the unknown (well, actually jumping down some stairs) that may well have been taken by @alixsharkey, as he and @dylanjones, @kateflett and DJ Rob Day @r0bday were representing the magazine at the party (pic 2). There was a fashion show on the dancefloor (pic 3) and the finest local designers and dressers (including Jill, Lisa and Katy, pic 4) were out in force. I was excited to be back at the Hac again because I’d first gone to the club soon after it opened in 1982 – as my twin brother Mike was studying in Manchester so it was a quick trip over the Pennines from Sheffield. And I was very happy to go back there in 1990 and photograph the Nude night where @graemepark and Mike Pickering (pic 5) @pickering54 had been tearing it up every Friday since 1988. The Foot Patrol dancers (pic 6) were among the best movers, but this was also the peak of baggy Madchester and ‘Mancadelia’ scene (pics 7-8). Graeme Park was one of many DJs to have a long residency there until the club sadly closed in 1997. @fac51thehaciendaofficial @unravelproductions
