Просуществовав с 1976 по 1980 год и издав всего 2 студийных альбома, коллектив добился небывалого успеха, благодаря глубокому мрачному звучанию и пропитанным символизмом текстам, очень точно отражающим индустриальную атмосферу Манчестера того времени. Joy Division стали одними из первых, кто ставил на звучание, отражающее не энергию или ненависть, а наоборот, опирающееся на меланхолическую экспрессию. Подсознание слушателей находится в постоянном напряжении, тогда как собственно разум "убаюкивается" под невинные переливы баса и гитары. Closer является логическим продолжением первого альбома (Unknown Pleasures). Музыка Joy Division никогда не отличалась оптимизмом, однако Сloser отличается поистине мрачным настроением и натурально пугает своей концептуальной идеей, несмотря даже на более легкое звучание по сравнению с Unknown Pleasures. Вокруг Сloser витает таинственная атмосфера и это ощущение обусловлено не только потому, что альбом вышел спустя два месяца после самоубийства вокалиста и автора песен Йена Кертиса. Слушая данный альбом постоянно настигает чувство непреодолимой тоски. Joy Division - She's Lost Control. Something Else Show. 15.09.1979. Curtis primarily drew the lyrical inspiration for "She's Lost Control" from a young woman with whom he had become acquainted through his employment as an Assistant Disablement Resettlement Officer at a Macclesfield occupational rehabilitation centre between 1978 and 1979. The woman had epilepsy and had been desperate to find employment, yet she suffered seizures whenever she came to the exchange, which would greatly disturb Curtis, who himself suffered from epilepsy. At one stage, this young woman ceased attending her appointments at the occupational rehabilitation centre. Initially, Curtis assumed she had found a job, but he would later discover she had died of an epileptic seizure. ◾️ New Order - Substance (1987) ◾️ Genre: Synthpop/Alternative Dance ◾️ Key track: Too many to choose from Należę do - dość licznej, ale jednak mniejszościowej - grupy ludzi, którzy całościowo cenią bardziej dorobek New Order niż Joy Division. Zawsze czuję się w obowiązku tłumaczyć z tego wyboru, bo rzadko kiedy spotykam się ze zrozumieniem. Otóż, lubię Joy Division, natomiast jest to dla mnie zespół zbyt jednowymiarowy - tak, wiem że w tym tkwiła między innymi jego siła, ja po prostu preferuję wykonawców mniej generycznych - i pod tym względem podobna im gatunkowo konkurencja miała mi więcej do zaoferowania. New Order imponuje mi odwagą. Bo Hook, Sumner i Morris wyszli z cienia przytłaczającej legendy swojego poprzedniego zespołu oraz samego Iana Curtisa i stworzyli się na nowo. Ale wiecie, nie poszli na skróty, bo przecież mogli odcinać kupony i dalej pchać ten rozklekotany wózek melancholii (na upartego pierwszą płytę New Order, "Movement" można uznać za taką nieśmiałą próbę). Oni jednak łyknęli antydepresanty, zapalili światła i z przygnębiająco ciasnej, ciemnej sali prób wyszli na dyskotekowe parkiety. "Blue Monday" to musiał być strzał w pysk dla wszystkich smutnych fanów Curtisa. I, cóż, wielu z nich uznało muzykę New Order za "zdradę". Zdradą okrzyknięto chęć realizowania się na własnych zasadach i w nowej, bardziej eksperymentalnej formule. Nie wiem, ja umywam ręce jak Poncjusz Piłat, bo nie znajduję winy w tym, że goście tak silnie związani z legendą zespołu, który widowiskowo się rozleciał, potrafili powstać z popiołu i wznieść się raz jeszcze na szczyt w zupełnie innym wydaniu. Słuchając New Order mam wręcz wrażenie, że to trio trochę dusiło się przeżywając razem z Curtisem jego codzienną tragedię. Po krótkim okresie żałoby zebrali się do kupy i zaproponowali coś wybitnie świeżego. Bo tak, muzyczna propozycja New Order to było przewietrzenie zatęchłego pokoju, w którym czuć rozkład martwego Joy Division. Nie przepadam za kompilacjami, "Substance" to jednak coś więcej niż the best of, to dokument ewolucji zespołu, który na papierze nie miał prawa wypalić.

A recently completed mural of Ian Curtis in his home town of Macclesfield, Cheshire UK. Ian was lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division. He had epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division’s first North American tour. Happy Independent Bookstore Day ! I use to read a lot , I still do but nothing compared to my high school days ... if I would love the book so much I would stay at the train station (I use to travel to school by train one hour) while my friends go to classes , and I would read until classes are over, they would pick me up and we would go back home. I read on the street , in my room, on the train, by the candlelight .... everywhere. I loved to read from Cocteau, Bronte, Poe, Kafka, Marques, Nietzsche, Fuentes,Lorca, Chekhov, Breton, to Tišma, Mandić, Albahari and even Basara at the time! I loved poetry, philosophy, gothic stories, short stories, fiction, biographies .. pretty much anything on art and music. When I ended up working for bookstore in 2000 no one was surprised, I worked five years for independent bookstore. When we came back from Serbia few weeks ago, my bag was full of books and records, and it looks my passion for reading (and writing) came back with me! One of the books from my 'old library' that I was able to recover is also this book (on photo) titled Mančesterski Suicid (Manchester Suicide) published by independent publisher from Serbia , Gradina in 1998. This is compilation of texts and poetry by Mark E. Smith, Morrissey, John Cooper Clarke and Ian Curtis ( translated to Serbian from English by Nikola Todorović). What do you read? Unknown Pleasures is the debut album by Joy Division, released in 1979. Its the only Joy Division album to be released before Ian Curtis took his own life. At the time there were no singles released from Unknown Pleasures, and the album did not chart despite the relative success of the group's follow-up single "Transmission". It has since received sustained critical acclaim as an influential post-punk album, and has been named as one of the best albums of all time by NME, AllMusic, and Rolling Stone. Although Unknown Pleasures failed to chart on the UK Albums Chart. However, following Curtis's death in May 1980 and the release of their second album, "Closer" it was reissued and reached no. 2 in the UK Indie Chart. The 40th-anniversary reissue of the album charted at number 5 in the UK Chart when it was released in 2019, making Unknown Pleasures Joy Division's highest charting album. After the death of Curtis in 1980 the remaining members, with the addition of Gillian Gilbert, regrouped under the name New Order. They were successful throughout the next decade, blending post-punk with electronic and dance music influences and In 2023, both Joy Division and New Order were nominated as one act for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
