• • A Certain Ratio – Good Together A&M Records 1989 Incl. inner sleeve with lyrics, graphics art, info letter A&M Records A Certain Ratio (abbreviated as ACR) are an English post-punk band formed in Greater Manchester in 1977 by Peter Terrell (guitar), Simon Topping (vocals, trumpet), Jez Kerr (bass guitar, vocals), Martin Moscrop (trumpet, guitar) and Donald Johnson (drums), with Martha Tilson (vocals) joining soon after. One of the first white indie groups to draw heavy influence from funk as well as disco and Latin percussion, the band were among the first to debut on Tony Wilson’s #factoryrecords in 1979 with „All Night Party,“ produced by #martinhannett Following late 1980s and early 1990s phases with A&M Records and Rob Gretton’s independent Robs Records, ACR were intermittently active. „Good Together“ was released in 1989. Though the band had signed to A&M Records in 1987, they lost the attention of the public as it was not until the summer of 1989 that new album arrived. Northside - Chicken Rhythms London Records 2024 Finally have a copy of this album. I’ve had their singles forever but never owned this album. An ex GF had it and loaned me it and I taped it. I liked it. Very baggy Manchester album, very much of the time. Originally a Factory Records band and their one and only album. Which is a shame. I know Dermo and the boys still tour. “Take 5” and “Shall We Take A Trip” are great songs and Madchester classics. Really chuffed they released this for RSD as it’s been long out of print. Art was by the same people behind Happy Mondays sleeves, Shaun Ryder’s cousins I believe. @centralstationdesignmanchester. Bought online from the excellent @piccadillyrecords after the remaining RSD stock went on sale. It’s astonishing to recognise how rapidly time passes and the arrival of this Durutti Column box set in a 35th anniversary edition is certainly a marker of that. I still remember when this first came out on the legendary Factory Records in 1989. I’ve long been an admirer of the work of Vini Reilly (b.1953), who is essentially Durutti Column at heart, (with the addition of drummer Bruce Mitchell and others at times), and have seen him live a number of times over the years. Indeed, this set features recordings of gigs I attended, so I can listen to a younger me clapping along at times. Curiously, Tony Wilson, head honcho of Factory Records, imagined Reilly to be their future pop star but sadly his largely instrumental work has kept a rather low key status over the years. The music is sensitive, mournful, autumnal in spirit, with a warm nostalgic spirit ever present. There’s always been a sense of fragility with Reilly, and even looking at images of him you can see this physically, as if a gentle gust of wind might knock him over in the street. I especially love the reductive use of vocal samples on this album, featuring Dame Joan Sutherland, Otis Redding, Tracy Chapman and Annie Lennox. This expansive boxset includes live recordings, a booklet with texts and photos, a reproduction of a mini 3-inch CD featuring a collaboration with singer Morrissey, and a DVD of a show in Porto in 1988. 75 tracks for a bargain price! Yoothas image was used for the release of ‘Ask’ in 🇬🇧 🇳🇱 🇵🇹 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇪🇸 🇮🇹 🇸🇪 🇮🇪.
