The cuttingly and cunningly-present living legacies of patriarchy, white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalism have impacted us generationally, viscerally and show up in our relationship to music. So we have to get conscious and creative about how we reclaim it. In 2002 my brother Nipsey came down to visit me and ended up living with me in ATL for a few months due to an unforseen circumstance . During this time we bonded and formed a life long friendship based on trading books , knowledge and overall game . We sold a project called Dare To Struggle that had the first song he had ever made and our first song together called “Somethin Ain’t Right” on it. “Dare To Struggle” was a project my god dad Mutulu Shakur and I produced and put together as a tribute to his son Tupac . During this time Mutulu and Nipsey spoke on the phone as Doc gave thanks for his contribution . We grinded everyday selling it in Down town Atlantas 5points as a way to get him back home to La because of a marijauna venture we were attempting going bad . This formed and created momentum for his Slauson campaign which he immediately started when he finally made it back as he kept selling cds in front of Slauson Tees upon his return. Some of me and his experience was talked about in Robert Kenners book “ The Marathon Don’t stop “ although the story was somewhat inaccurate because he didn’t get the account from me personally . Let me say It was an honor to bring him around my New Afrikan folks and expose him to a culture that a lot folks don’t know exists. We were so proud of this brother for his successes and triumphs over the street culture in LA and in life in general . Today , on this 2nd day of Black history month we honor the revolutionary that was Ermias Ashgedom aka Nipsey Hussle . My brother . Activists in this struggle are demanding their governments stop militarily and diplomatically supporting Israel until it agrees to an immediate and permanent ceasefire in its ongoing bombing of Gaza and an end to its military occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. They are using songs as a political tool for building morale and unity during this bleak historical moment. Some songs protest the ongoing bombardment of Gaza. Some give voice to oceans of trauma and grief, which are given scanty space to be felt during wartime, except when connected with vengeance. Some provide a political vision for a radical transformation in which the people of Palestine and Israel live together “in peace and unafraid". Panelists are asked to present examples of songs they are currently using in the struggle for peace with justice in Israel/Palestine and to address these questions: 1. #EventRecap! ICYMI: Last Friday The intersection of Macarthur Blvd & Grand Ave was officially renamed to Tupac Shakur Way! Oakland put together a HUGE renaming ceremony at Lake Merrit, where Kingmakers of Oakland CEO Chris Chatmon was invited to say some opening words about the significance of the renaming. The lineup of speakers included several important local officials, including Councilwoman Carroll Fife, as well as titans of the music industry such as rapper E-40, MC Hammer, and DJ/MC Real Sway.
