After parking the rig in a designated dispersed campsite in the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, we hiked to the eastern edge of Lake Michigan. Our first thought was, “holy crap, this is a lake?!”. It was a perfect weather day so that helped with the “ooh ahh” factor but for us Floridians, this lake was an enigma. So, the biggest predator is a lake trout? No shells but lots of cool rocks… um Kay. Clear fresh water with no stinging critters, no seaweed debris…. Hmm nice. Pretty calm out there… for now. A couple days later, the storm clouds rolled in… I didn’t get any pics but if you replace all the blue with gray, you’ll get the idea. Last we checked, it was about 10 degrees along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan! So the 3,271-acre Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness in Michigan is covered under a blanket of snow, and parts of Lake Michigan are certainly frozen! Over the past 13,000 years, as the level of Lake Michigan rose and fell, winds swept the exposed sand from the lakebed into a series of rolling dunes. Most of the present dunes within the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness date back between 3,500 and 4,000 years, so they've seen their share of bitter cold weather—and warm, idyllic summer days. Gouache is a water-based, highly pigmented paint that dries even faster than watercolor. I see many potential benefits with this medium. It is faster paced, easy to travel with, less toxic, and the materials themselves are significantly more affordable than my oil materials. Considering all of this, I am able to sell these original gouache paintings for half the cost of my work in oil. A few weeks ago I did my first official bikepacking trip. About 86 miles over an afternoon and the next morning. Exploring the dunes along the lakeshore and the Manistee National Forest, including a section of the North Country Trail, it was a great little ride. When life gives you lemons? We've planned a backpacking trip to North Manitou Island, the last 2 years in a row. BOTH trips were cancelled last minute for reasons out of our control. This year, we weren't willing to let it ruin our already scheduled vacation, so we came up with an alternate plan.
