In a previous professional life, I was a copywriter and creative director. We did a lot of brainstorming and I was fortunate to have a boss who was great at facilitating those sessions. One of the tools she introduced (from a creativity deck I can’t remember the name of) was 180-degree thinking. Bear with me for a moment. Whenever we were stuck for ideas, she encouraged us to “uno reverse” the situation. What were our most terrible ideas? What would fail the hardest? It sparked our imaginations and, when we felt we’d gone as far as possible in the worst direction, we flipped those ideas around 180 degrees. A chair that farted when you sat down in it became one with aromatherapy cushions. That kind of thing. That approach has worked in myriad situations in the years since, and the reading I’m sharing with you today did the same thing in my brain: Apple and Vine. For context, I pulled those two ogham on a day when I’d had to revamp my approach to the day a handful of times already, each time trying to make things a little easier and my obstacles less insurmountable. Apple encourages choices, especially those that support physical health and general wellness. Making things easier that day was accommodation. I could recognize that but somehow thought it lessened me? Like, my successes were LESS worthy than if I’d done things the hard way. Then I saw Vine, for a job well done and worth celebrating. It seemed to me that the confirmation wasn’t about any single task or ambition, but more about the way I made it easier…even a little bit FUN. What IF. What if, what if, what if…instead of chiseling away at a hard task until it felt manageable, I instead seek the easiest possible permutation of that task? Even better, can I make it fun? Flip it 180 degrees. Uno reverse my perfectionism. Gotta say, it worked out really really well. What is on your list today that you can approach in the simplest, most joyful, and least demanding way? Insects and arachnids have become some of my main spiritual messengers. They are omens of what is to come. I came across this phrase from Paul Rhys Mountfort (in his book _Ogam: The Celtic Oracle of the Trees_), when I was checking on some associations for this reading, and it added an unexpected twist for me: “We become habituated to our wounds and consequently manifest situations where our worst expectations are confirmed.” Now that’s firmly in your head, the fistful of three ogham I pulled were: ~ Ivy - the persistence of raw survival instinct, a primal impulse ~ Blackthorn - strife and trouble, possibly self-inflicted ~ White Poplar - for buoyancy and floating above problems In a very tidy package, those three sum up a pattern that’s no longer useful to me, my typical response, and a remedy within my power. Read for filth, as they say. Unhealthy patterns definitely offer the twisted comfort of predictability, but they sure don’t leave space for anything different (or better!) to occur. But help me figure this one out ❔ Yesterday, my wife meets a worker, helping us to design something, and she is meeting him for the first time. He needs to send her some pictures so he shares his number with her, as she’s trying to save it, she asks his name and he says, ‘it’s Shravan Kumar’, for a second my wife looks at him and she just got this weird feeling but all good so far ❕ The same afternoon my daughter gets home from school and she shares with my wife that she has been chosen for a play and the teacher will send some lines for practice. A few hours later, my wife gets the message and she can’t believe her eyes for a minute. The message read (In Hindi) “A few days later Shravan’s parents passed away” (my daughter’s line). The play is ofcourse ‘Shravan Kumar’. She could have gotten any other line but she got this one. Then, if this was not weird enough, a few hours later, I see a notification on my Instagram— ‘Shravan…’ has started following you.
