The wild dogs live a rather nomadic lifestyle. They don’t claim any territory except for the 2-3 months a year in which they are denning. Since they move around a lot, it can be very hard to see them. When we saw the pack of 10 dogs for the first time, I started crying. We followed them into the night. They were very light on their feet and seemingly moved through the bush like ghosts in the night. It felt like a once in a lifetime moment until we came across another pack of 6 the following morning. African Wild Dogs (Painted Dogs) work together to make a kill. And we watched them do just that when they collectively brought down a Lechwe in the Okavango Delta. It was extraordinary. It happened so fast. Each move made by every member of the pack was beautifully and brutally choreographed. It was pure and very real. If you're looking for me, all you have to do is drive Southwest, until the road tapers off and the mobile signal dies away and the pavement gives over to steep green banks and the temperature starts to fall even though you could have sworn it was sunny when you left the house. Look for this little ramshackle farm cottage deep in the valley sat lopsided in a graveyard of rusting abandoned farm machinary and jobs half done by people long gone. I'm there. Likely standing in my underpants in the back garden, hollering at some dog offstage. There are my two daughters laughing. Paintings and clay and arty ideas lay peppered around my feet. If you are using good binoculars, you can tell even though the image is grainy - that the woman in your lense doesn't get the recommended amount of sleep or water. But if you magnify further, you'll be able to see if you squint that she is happy. And then you look at your papers and see that this is not a woman who has had an outstanding year. In fact, on paper, this woman appears to be righteously unhappy (in addition to underslept and dehydrated). But sometimes paper is inadequate and in spite of all of the tragedy -personal to global - of the past year she is happy. Happy Earth Day !! 🌍 After returning from 2 nights away from our main camp, you learn to appreciate the things that you have even more. The dry lands are very inhospitable. The days of a tracker are hot and very long. And the night transect was very cold. The information that the project is collecting is important. There are areas in Botswana where they pump water in from underground. We saw very little wildlife on the transects that we did in the dry lands because there is very little water there. The absence of animals will hopefully tell the government to bring the water back to certain areas. The animals cannot survive without water and climate change is making it even harder for them. But despite what is seemingly unlivable conditions, nature always finds a way to adapt, survive and be beautiful. We did see 6 hyena on our night transect. We also came across a herd of over 75 elephants, with young about a month old or less. We were putting the final touches on our preparations to launch into full time family travel. Amidst these preparations we decided we should have some form of a will in place. Just in case the world really was just as scary as some people thought it to be and we really were just as stupid as some people worried we were, if something happened to one or both of us we wanted to make sure our kids didn't get turned over to the state. We asked some friends from church, both lawyers, to assist us in building a quick and passable will. We hadn't ever discussed our faith crisis with these friends but I guess they knew enough to be worried about us because as we were getting ready to leave, one of them looked Evan right in the face and point blank asked if this was us leaving the church. Evan started to form an answer when he cut him off and said, “Just promise me. Promise me you won't stop going. Don’t. stop. going to church. No matter what. You need it. Your kids need it. Whatever you do, just don't stop going.” And he almost let us go but then had to finish with, “OH! And when you go to Fiji, DON'T DRINK THE KAVA.” Going on about how it's actually a drug! A hallucinogen! It'll mess you up, it's not good for you. Well, we didn't know anything about Kava, but had heard there would be a kava ceremony upon our arrival in Fiji so I stuck a mental red flag in that and decided I'd look into it later. Anyways. With a will(ish) in place, our stuff sold and even just given away at the end there, we cleaned the house, loaded the car with everything we owned, dropped our kids off at their grandparents’ house, and drove downtown to close on the sale of our house. And that was it. We were officially homeless. On purpose. Nomads. Wanderers. World travelers in the making. And with that we took our first steps into our full time family travel adventure. We were actually doing it, reader. Building the life of our dreams.

This male and female are on their “honeymoon” - which is when they separate themselves from the pride for a few days. They came into our camp last night. At around midnight the male became very vocal right behind the tents (including mine). His calls started off as several loud roars and ended in a series of grunting huffs. You could hear the pride responding to him in the distance. He then proceeded to make his way in front of the tents and into camp. He continued to make his calls throughout the night, and they did not become quieter until after 3am. No one slept during this time. Once the day started to get lighter, we could still hear them but they were farther away. We did not emerge from out tents until there was light. And then we found the tracks, and we started to tell our stories about what we felt during the experience. It was a bustle of both excitement and fearful laughter. I was too afraid to look out my tent window last night when the lion was so close. Another response came by phone. I was told that the email read to them like the loving concern of a Relief Society president. That for a "self-proclaimed lover of hard conversations” this should not have gotten me all riled up the way it did. We did get to address a few of their concerns though and I felt like they left the conversation with greater understanding and faith in us and our wild idea. I remember explaining that I just REALLY trust in our problem solving skills and our ability to land on our feet. Every time. No matter what. I reminded them that up to this point in our lives we had never allowed our family to fall in harm's way. We have always had the intuition, the protective instincts and the awareness to help us sense and avoid danger. I had to believe that that same intuition, instinct and powers for discernment would travel with us. Would likely be even more finely tuned and vigilant on this big adventure with our four young kids. There were questions. What about when? And what happens if? I told them about a powerful visual I'd created and carry in my mind. I told them I envision myself walking in a dark cave. I'm holding a lantern but the dark is so thick that my lantern can only light a few steps ahead of me. For a long time, what might lie beyond the light of my lantern felt really scary and prevented me from moving forward. But I noticed that first of all, if I never moved forward, I would never know what was beyond the reach of my lantern. It’s possible that the things that scared me weren’t there at all! I also noticed that I was in control of how fast I moved forward. And with every step forward, even little tiny tip toe steps, the light of my lantern crept forward as well. It was always illuminating the next few steps. And those few steps were enough to work with. All I really needed to focus on were those few steps at a time. I trusted that I would always be able to see those few small steps ahead of where I stood and that even with only that much vision, I had the time and skills, resourcefulness and intuition needed to navigate those next steps. We were responsible. We loved our kids. We could do this! We really could.
Morning on the trail a couple weeks ago. Needing some more right now, in a big way. Some raw. Some natural. Some free. Had stopped to eat some oats and refill water on my way back from a sunrise summit attempt. There really is a specific feeling I associate with wandering a river in the early morning. If you don't know what I mean. I highly encourage some personal investigation. Today is challenging. Caught a cold/flu and had to cancel weekend plans, which really meant a lot-lot-lot to me. Feel like I let people down, even though I know that's silly. I feel vulnerable, challenged, heavy hearted. I'm sick so I have that innate want of some arms around me, or caring touch. Fear. I felt it last night. My body was tired, but I was still hungry for more. I'd already done 8k and about 35 miles in the last few days. The ease with which I grabbed the peak night before made me... comfortable and I decided to go for another, taller and with more avy concerns. It was warm, no it was hot, when I arrived at the trailhead. About ten degrees warmer than I anticipated, which added a crease to my forehead filled with concerns about the avy danger. I was sweating within ten minutes on the trail. Very grateful when I finally started entering the snow line. Feeling the drafts of cooler air coming up off it. By my best guesses I had just enough time to make the peak for sunset, then a quick turnaround and bail down the mountain for weather coming in. I was already watching clouds start to cover the beautiful blue bird. There was some gambling. I didn't actually know how okay I was going to be with the avalanche terrain and I had adjusted my route to off trail in order to mitigate some of it, but didn't know what that would entail until I saw it. It also changed the summit approach to a different ridge and it was hard to see on satellite and topo what this meant for the final push. I was aware I might 'hit a wall.' I told myself I would be okay turning around if I reached anything that felt too unsafe. Too unsafe. I'm figuring out what that line is for me..I'm new here and without experience that can be hard to define. I grew up in the Midwest, but feel like I'm just beginning to learn about snow. Making it through the approach I was now heading up the spine and got detoured to a steep sidehill to circumnavigate some rock barriers. Peaking up through the trees I could see small cornices perched above me, giving an extra little adrenaline boost. I got back on the spine as soon as I could then was into the final off and on exposed push. - continued in comments if you got this far - (📷 from last night.
