Numbers dont lie. On average, in Aus one female a week dies at the hand of a male - overwhelmingly likely to be intimately known to her. A family member, a lover, a husband. 5 years ago, my mother Gihan had her life cut short by my father Mourad Kerollos. My family now contributes to that tragic statistic. So far in 2024, that statistic is up to 4 a day. The supreme court of NSW has ruled my father's act a manslaughter, not a murder. This means there is a moderate chance that my father Mourad Kerollos and others who follow his legal arguments in court after killing a female will be released back into the public. Why this obscene volume of male on female violence? Are mental illness and drug use to be cited as the root causes? Or are these only as deep as we are willing to dig as a society? In males, where does the drive to control, assault, coerce, and kill women originate from? Is it rooted in evolutionary biology? Is it an artifact of archaic gender roles perpetuated by religions and old cultures? Is it the patriarchy that pervades our legal, corporate and wider cultural and societal systems? All of these things? I think the patriarchy contributes to the entitlement males have when killing and controlling women. I think that archaic gender roles and attitudes act as an obstacle to males allowing themselves to feel and be vulnerable enough to relinquish some control to get help. But the numbers dont lie. It's not a specific population or demographic over representing this male on female violence. It's everyone. Not Muslims. Not Christians. Not just white anglo people or ethnic immigrants or certain socio-economic tax stratas of society. It's everyone. Whatever it is, it runs deep. After being married for nearly 5 years, today I headed to the transport centre to officially update my name on my drivers license. The paperwork still hasn’t been completed (after 2 visits and being told on both occasions it would be a 2 hour wait) but this was a significant step for me. Officially changing my name is a decision I’ve put off for years, not because of any hesitation, but because of the myriad of emotions it stirs within me. Being part of the last generation on my dad’s side carries a heavy and sad significance. If my brother doesn’t have children (which is not likely at this point in time) our family name will end with us. The thought of this is heartbreaking, especially because I am so close with my dad. It feels like a part of our family’s history and identity might fade away. But it’s not just about the name. It’s about me, about Skye Oldham, and my identity. Suddenly having a new name feels like saying goodbye to a part of myself. It’s a loss that Im struggling to come to terms with even though I tell people my new married name all the time! And then there’s the reality of my children having a different last name, a reflection of societal norms that prioritises the father’s surname. I love my children more than anything so the disparity in naming conventions brings its own set of complexities and challenges to navigate. Gender roles exist for a reason. Men and women compliment each other. We are not meant to be exactly equal. Men are to be providers and protectors. Women are to be caregivers and comforters. There is a reason for hormone differences. There is a reason men are larger (in a general sense). There is a reason our brains work in different ways. ✝️ - - - - Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Not that women necessarily need another male voice in the matter, but I share where I’m at with this topic because the conversation still matters because women matter in the Church and home, as do men. And if we are going to create a theological framework to guide the everyday follower of Jesus on how gender roles and dynamics ought to be according to the Scriptures, not just our theology must be right, but so too our praxis. Theological systems and frameworks are needed and helpful, don’t get me wrong. However, complementarianism and egalitarianism has created yet another “us vs. them” paradigm within the body of Christ and has led to more division than good in my opinion. Do dads matter more than moms? I've seen it EVERYWHERE--the idea that a man coming to Christ is far more important to the family than a woman coming to Christ. This stat is one reason why people like Matt Chandler can announce that he primarily preaches to the men--and the women can learn at home. And it likely explains why megachurch pastors like Josh Howerton feel that they can cut women's ministries and areas where gifted women can serve, in favour of men's ministries. We don't actually need the women, after all. We need the men! But what if none of that is based on actual research? What if the stats just simply aren't true? What if mothers are just as crucial to the family as fathers are? One of the things that grieves us at Bare Marriage is that statistics like this can get passed around so often, but no one actually knows where they're from. The authors Ebert T. L and Rawat P.S do a great job in their articles “The Romance of Patriarchy” (1988) and “Patriarchal beliefs Women Empowerment and General Wellbeing” (2014) of showing all aspects of how gender roles affects society. Rawat explains the effects patriarchy had on all aspects of society while Ebert shows the patriarchal restraints toward women more specifically in cultural and class aspects. This exact prom-posal happened to a friend of my daughter's. I was shocked and saddened. But my gut told me that it had to be a trend, which it was. When you google 'let's go to prom you stupid b*tch' and you'll find MANY photos of girls smiling, excitedly agreeing to go to prom with someone who would verbally abuse them in public. Young boys are being socialized to be 'alpha,' and to have the courage to dominate women. And girls, seeing clout or self-esteem, are socialized to seek out the most dominant partner. As a parent of two young women, I'm deeply upset on behalf of all of the teen girls who do not know that they are being abused. This type of gender role socialization is an express train to intimate partner violence and coercive control.
