The one that is local to us and that grows in a lovely large stand on our land is pedicularis canadensis. An effective skeletal muscle relaxant. This batch is for tincturing but I will also make some into a body oil for stiff and sore muscles and tension headaches. In folklore it is used to make a marriage better, for protection were it was carried to ward of negative spirits, it was seen as a symbol of strength and resilience and it was used in love charms and to make one irresistible. This is a beautiful handful of Tibetan medicinal potential. The plants, all of which were plentiful, were pointed out to us by our wonderful guides and teachers. I gathered one example of each to bring back to camp so that I could press and identify them. From left to right at the back they are: Bupleurum falcatum (Bo kay zeera serpo) བོད་སྐྱེས་ཟི་ར་སེར་པོ། Gnaphalium spp (a Cudweed) གནྡྷ་བྷ་ཏྲ། Aconitum spp (Bong nga nakpo) བོང་ང་ནག་པོ། The pale yellow flower in the centre at the front is Yellow Sheep’s Horn (Luk ru serpo) ལུག་རུ་སེར་པོ། in Tibetan script. Yellow Sheep’s Horn is a member of the Lousewort- ie Pedicularis genus. It is abundant in the high grasslands of Tibet, its creamy yellow flowers forming breathtaking swathes of colour during its relatively short flowering season. The texts describe Luk ru serpo as being bitter in taste and cool in power. It’s said to collect poisoning diseases which have spread in the body and, in particular, it cures poisoning caused by bad meat. It removes stomach fever and stops diarrhoea. Louseworts also grow in Europe. Pedicularis as a genus is prescribed in numerous circumstances including in cases of fever, debility, rheumatism, urinary system problems, sluggish digestion or where circulatory support is needed. It makes me wonder whether the medicinal virtues of Pedicularis spp, within traditional European medicine, are similar to those within the Tibetan pharmacopoeia. It also reminds me just how amazing our plant kin are and how much there is to learn from them. I’m not a lousewort, you’re a lousewort. My favorite of the louseworts is easily Pedicularis groenlandica (elephant’s head lousewort🐘)! Groenlandica is a perfectly peculiar Pedicularius whom has the unmistakable features of a blushing elephant, and trust me the charisma is off the charts. Just remember to never be aggressive around these elephants as they WILL stampede if threatened. Otherwise they are quite amenable to having their pictures taken, and will often pose rather still for you. Found some wild "elephant's head" pedicularis yesterday. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite flowers to find. It's beautiful, plus it is an AMAZING medicinal, providing relaxation and tranquility. Made as a tea. 🌿Today's spotlight falls on an intriguing botanical trickster, the Wood Betony, or as some call it, the Lousewort (Pedicularis canadensis). This perennial forb paints the woodland floors, sandy oak savannas, and upland prairies with hues of yellow and sometimes, a mix of reddish-purple. However, Lousewort is not just any wildflower; it carries a notorious reputation. The name 'Lousewort' hints at a longstanding myth - it was erroneously believed that livestock grazing on these plants would be infested with lice. Hence the name 'Pedicularis' - a nod to the Latin word for lice. The twist? Lousewort is indeed a parasite! But fear not - it’s not after our bovine friends but instead has its sights set on neighboring plants. As a hemiparasite, Lousewort slyly draws water and nutrients from other plants, using specialized root connections called haustoria. Great to be back in the mountains again! Today we went from Ischgl, where we are staying, by cable car up to the Filmjoch bergstation at 2.753m and then walked down to the Idalp at 2.320m. After that we took the Silvrettabahn brack to town. Incredible how many different and beautiful plants we saw on this first day. A lot of alpine marmots too. Lousewort ~ Heidekartelblad Nog nooit had ik zo veel Heidekartelblad gezien als in het beekdal van de Oude Ley tijdens de veldexcursie van de Ecologische Kring Brabant (17-6-'23). Het is een vrij zeldzame Kwetsbare Rode Lijst-soort die sinds 1940 zéér sterk (> 75%) achteruitgegaan is. Daarom mooi succesje dat de soort het hier, naast die vele orchideeën, het zo goed doet in het vochtige heischrale graslanden langs de Oude Ley. De meeste planten waren al lang uitgebloeid en hadden al zaad gezet (in bruin verdorde zaaddozen; zie foto 3 en 4). What a crazy looking wildflower! Lousewort or Pericularis canadensis is said to be named so because farmers used to believe their cattle would eat these and it would result in a lice outbreak. Louse is the singular of lice. Wort means it has medicinal values. Their belief seems just a tale of misconstrued information because this plant actually helps remove lice. It is also commonly called wood betony. Stomach aches, ulcers, and gut probs can be soothed with this plant. The roots can be chopped up for a tea that can fight muscle inflammation or chopped and sprinkled into your food for an aphrodisiac. Lousewort is predominantly found on damp, boggy soils across Ireland. A low growing perennial plant with pale pink flowers of approximately 2cm, flowering from April to June. It is hemiparasitic, gaining some of its nutrients and water from other plants but also photosynthesises through small, fern like leaves. Day 3 on Coll and a trip to the end of the road to the north, #sorisdalebay with views from just above ro the Islands of #rhum #eigg #muck and #canna. Secluded sandy cove with no one but ourselves. Another poignant reflective visit was to the cemetery where David ministered and conducted the funeral of a local island dignatory, Mrs Hingston. Also there were the graves of some merchant seamen lost in the war at a tender age and whose bodies were committed here. This was a peaceful and wild place and gave space for reflective thought. I climbed the mountain on Coll! #beinnhogh gave me 360 views , looking south to #tiree. An incredible boulder perched on 3 stones and an Easter Island look-alike. Highlight of the day was witnessing close up, 2 cuckoos, both calling and disturbing the other birds. Nearly 60 and I have never seen the bird in such close proximity, absolutely magical and we have heard cuckoos constantly. Also several other birds I have never ever encountered and some listed below. Lousewort. Our most species rich meadow and rarest habitat on the farm is categorised as Rhos Pasture. This is a very damp meadow habitat that in terms of forage is highly unproductive, but in terms of biodiversity is very rich. Among the many species that we have growing here is this Lousewort. It is a very low growing plant with pink flowers. It is hemi-parasitic, which means it obtains some of its minerals from the roots of other plants, particularly grasses. This makes it a very useful plant for encouraging a high diversity of wild flowers as it helps control vigorous grasses that out compete many other plant species. We have been monitoring our Louse Wort and noticed it has been spreading, which is good news. Our Rhos Pasture is very carefully and lightly grazed keeping the balance tipped towards encouraging plant diversity over grazing productivity. It has a very brief period of cattle grazing in March to nibble down grasses before the spring growth and will not be grazed again until mid August. Lousewort is so called because it is said to induce lice in cattle. Another theory is that it harbours snails that contain the larvae of liver fluke, which is a cattle parasite. There is probably some animal welfare truth in this so care needs to be taken when grazing stock on this type of habitat. When we graze here our cattle are able to range across it and also graze a neighbouring field so they can selectively graze and browse. We find our cattle keep in excellent condition.
