Ik heb heidekartelblad (Pedicularis sylvatica) voor het eerst gezien vandaag aan de rand van een heideveld op de Veluwe. Op een klein drassig open stuk heide dat over gaat in gras, waar we in de zomer ook de klokjesgentiaan vinden. Het is een zeldzame en kwetsbare éénjarige halfparasiet van de bremraapfamilie. Heidekartelblad wordt door uitdroging, bemesting en stikstofverrijking bedreigd in Nederland. Continuing with a short series of posts on the genus Pedicularis, here are a few of its morphological characteristics: - Herbaceous, mostly perennial - Leaves pinnatifid or pinnate - Terminal inflorescence with leafy bracts - Zygomorphic flowers - Tubular or bell-shaped fused calyx - Fused corolla with distinct upper and lower lip - Four stamens, simple stigma, superior ovary The four species shown here occur in the foothill to subalpine altitude zones. They all like humid to wet environments. The first two are true wetland plants. 1: Pedicularis palustris, Sumpf-Läusekraut, marsh lousewort. Grows in fens, often in large colonies. Red-listed NT in Switzerland due to the destruction of wetland habitats. It has a very wide global distribution ranging from Eastern North America to Siberia. Wetzikon, May 22, 2016. 2: Pedicularis sylvatica, Waldmoor-Läusekraut, common lousewort. Unlike its name suggests it is not a forest plant, but grows in acidic Sphagnum bogs (which may well have interspersed or adjacent trees). Pedicularis sylvatica subsp. sylvatica L. [Orobanchaceae] Llamada comúnmente gallarito, esta es otra pequeña flor hemiparásita que roba agua y nutrientes con sus raíces a las plantas adyacentes. Antes se incluía en la familia Scrophulariaceae. Tiene un porte pequeño, de hasta 25 cm, aunque a veces solo saca algún pequeño tallo con una flor que no llega a sobresalir del pasto, como en este caso. Tallos villosos, con hojas divididas en foliolos. Corola bilabiada, de 8 a 10 mm. Florece de abril a septiembre. Habita en pastos húmedos, turberas, brezales, pastos montanos y orillas de arroyos hasta los 2400 m de altitud. Está distribuida por el sur y oeste de Europa e Islas Británicas. En la península Ibérica podemos encontrar esta subespecie en el norte, desde Galicia hasta Pirineos, más común en los sistemas montañosos. Lousewort ~ Heidekartelblad Nog nooit had ik zo veel Heidekartelblad gezien als in het beekdal van de Oude Ley tijdens de veldexcursie van de Ecologische Kring Brabant (17-6-'23). Het is een vrij zeldzame Kwetsbare Rode Lijst-soort die sinds 1940 zéér sterk (> 75%) achteruitgegaan is. Daarom mooi succesje dat de soort het hier, naast die vele orchideeën, het zo goed doet in het vochtige heischrale graslanden langs de Oude Ley. De meeste planten waren al lang uitgebloeid en hadden al zaad gezet (in bruin verdorde zaaddozen; zie foto 3 en 4). Martin guidade idag ett gäng studerande från Skovskolen (skogs- och landskapsutbildning) under Københavns Universitet. Vi besökte vårt lokala backlandskap kring Drakamöllan och naturreservatet Kronovalls store vång. Vi såg den variation av livsmiljöer och strukturer som följer med betande djur. Vid Äskebjär (bild 1) var det som alltid en ögonöppnare att se kontrasten mellan den torra torra backen och det blöta rikkärret vid backens fot. Grundvatten som tränger fram i ytan betyder så mycket för naturens liv, inte bara för de specialiserade kärrlevande arterna men också för insekter i omgivningen när det som nu är snustorrt. Vid Kronovall hittade bl.a. vi gott om granspira (bild 2) som ser ut att ha ökat där de senare året. We've just spent a wonderful few hours on Dartmoor on and around Emsworthy Mire...an excellent Devon Wildlife Trust reserve. Its famous for its display of bluebells and didn't disappoint (last photo)but these three flowers especially caught my eye. Spotted heath orchids....common lousewort and heath milkwort...all acid specialists. Next time I hope to find sundews! A walk to Red Strand beach today as the car has had to have a short trip to the garage. This had the fortunate bonus of meaning a couple of close up spots of flowers in the verge. The first (no. 119) has the unfortunate name of Common Lousewort, but what a pretty little pea-like flower! No. 120 is Great Willowherb or Hairy (hirsutum) Willowherb. Heidekartelblad is een giftige, halfparasitaire, tweejarige plant, die behoort tot de bremraapfamilie. De soort staat op de Nederlandse Rode lijst van planten als zeer zeldzaam en zeer sterk in aantal afgenomen. De plant komt van nature voor in Europa. Gisteren ontdekte ik de soort langs een oude spoorbaan ergens op het Kommiezenpad. Ik zag meteen dat het nauw verwant was aan moeraskartelblad dat bij ons thuis in de Maaslandse Vlietlanden bloeit nu. Meer een laag-bij-de-gronds type dit. Er stonden er vele. Last week, on Orkney, I stumbled across this beauty: Common Lousewort, Pedicularis sylvatica. Believed to have connections with liver fluke (although without substantial evidence), lousewort is a part parasite, gaining water and nutrients from other plants by latching onto their roots. I've never come across it before, so when I saw its bright pink flowers, it stopped me in my tracks. Three coastal plants of the Uists that can be found flowering in June. The first is Common Storksbill (Erodium cicutarium) which incidentally also grows on a grass verge outside my house in Surrey, next is Lousewort (Pedicularis sylvatica) so called as it was once thought to give lice to cattle and finally Sea Campion (Silene vulgaris ssp. maritima) which forms pretty clumps amid the rocks.

Lousewort (Pedicularis sylvatica) It has these beautiful bilaterally symmetrical pinky purple flowers, with two tiny teeth on the upper petal, and the flowers have no stem but emerge straight out of a balloon-like calyx. It’s an interesting little perennial, growing low to the ground on acidic, damp heathland and grassland (swipe to see), and like Yellow-rattle ( a few posts ago) Lousewort is hemiparasitic. It’s roots form associations with neighboring plants, especially grasses, to obtain nutrients. Flowers from April to July and is often seen alongside Tormentil (which is tomorrow’s post - I know, exciting :) I’ve tried to find reasons why it’s called lousewort: that it was thought to cause lice in cattle, that it can be used as a cure for lice etc. All sound a bit dodgy. Lousewort (Pedicularis sylvatica) The bright pink tiers of this plant have started bursting from the wet heaths of the NW Scottish Highlands recently. Its English name comes from an incorrect belief that if cattle ate it then they’d get louse infestations. The typically nutrient-poor habitats that this plant grows in has pushed it to become hemiparasitic on other plants. Gotta survive somehow.
The next flower I have spotted lots of recently is commonly known as lousewort! Official name: Pedicularis sylvatica I do love plant names, I suspect they are a rabbit hole I could quite easily get lost in! Lousewort grows most abundantly in the damp soils of heaths, bogs and moors. It is hemi-parasitic on the roots of other plants, particularly grasses, that grow in close proximity to it. These photos were taken on my 10mile hike around the Fritham area the other day, on a big hill next to the path, but I did also find some today at Copythorne. Kystmyrklegg (Pedicularis sylvatica). Funnet i Strandli, Strandvik, Bjørnafjorden kommune, Vestland fylke, 9.mai 2020. 🔸️Toårig art i snylterotfamilien. 🔸️Halvparasittisk urt. 🔸️5-20 cm høy, med dobbelt fjærdelte blad og slappe stengler. Blomstene er rødrosa. 🔸️I Norge er det funnet to underarter: vanlig kystmyrklegg og irsk kystmyrklegg (Pedicularis s. subsp. hibernica). 🔸️Vanlig kystmyrklegg vokser på lyngheier, myrkanter og fuktige enger langs kysten fra Østfold til Trøndelag, også et stykke inn i landet. Planten er mest vanlig på Sørvestlandet. 🔸️Irsk kystmyrklegg er i Norge bare funnet noen få steder ytterst på Møre- og Trøndelagskysten.
