2024 Out of the Darkness Uofl Campus: Mental health and Suicide Prevention is something that's really important to me. I was really happy when mental health finally came to the main table instead of always being no table at all. We all have experienced lows in our lifetime. Just because someone else's struggles/lows look different than others does not mean they're not real. We all have struggles. I remember growing up. It was like a sin to talk about being sad because others would say it's not real or be like "oh you're depressed". There is a difference in being sad and being depressed. It's okay to feel sad, I don't want someone to feel alone. Mental health is real, and those who don't believe it are worse off because they're in denial. I often think that when people don't know or understand something, they're often really quick to offer their opinion instead of taking the time to listen and learn. So, if you struggle, it's okay to not be okay. You're not a burden to the right people. It's okay to take time for yourself. The gym is one of my places to go to just think, rearrange my thoughts, and focus on my health, especially mental. Lastly, if you ever need someone to just listen. I'll be that person, as my momma said you have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Close your mouth and just listen. Take the time now for someone, then regret late. Let's be there for one another. You matter! Volunteer roles: "I have tabled at events, I helped with Be The Light fundraising event where we raised over $25k, I walked and tabled at Nashville Pride 2023 and participated in the sign making and bracelet making for Pride. I also helped plan and participated in the Out of the Darkness walk in October." What inspired you to get involved? "I volunteer with AFSP because I lost my brother and niece both to suicide. I have also attempted myself. My son and daughter both struggle with their mental health as well. So it's a cause that is very near and dear to my heart." What is your favorite memory from volunteering with AFSP? "My favorite memory is probably Pride. I had never attended a Pride event before that! The amount of people that told us tabling that they were so happy to see us there was amazing and humbling." What advice would you give to new volunteers? "Do not underestimate yourself and your ability to make a difference. I didn't think that I had anything to offer and would never be able to make a difference. This is simply not true. Showing up shows that you care. Sometimes all it takes is a smile. Sometimes someone needs to hear your why so that they know they aren't alone. If one person walks away feeling better, you've made a difference." This National Volunteer Week, we want to highlight a special person on our (volunteer) Board of Directors: Angela Perry! Angela found AFSP in 2014 after a childhood friend died by suicide. Her first event was the Portland #OutoftheDarkness walk and she's been involved in our chapter ever since! Angela joined the board in 2017 and became the Board Chair in 2018. She served as the Board Chair until she passed the baton to our new Board Chair, Vuong Tran, just this past February. She is still active on our board and serves as the Public Policy Chair. Advocacy is her favorite, but her passion area is supporting those with lived experience. She wears green, teal, purple, blue, silver, and rainbow honor beads. What brought you to AFSP?: A. My first experience with suicide was the loss of my uncle in 1988. I was too young at the time to really understand the complexity and trauma of losing a loved one to suicide. It was the loss of my younger and only brother in 2010 that absolutely devastated me. His passing caused me to seek individual and group therapy to wrap my mind around this life-changing tragedy. I also wanted to get involved to be an advocate for the black community. I found when attending survivor group sessions I was the only black person in attendance. The ultimate goal is to completely prevent suicide, but until then to help my community reduce the stigma of suicide and mental health issues. Q. Why is your work with AFSP important to you?: A. Yesterday, our SVA members participated and hosted a table with ROTC at the annual “Out of the Darkness” event. This event recognized the importance of suicide awareness and the personal struggles many face with mental health. This past Saturday, I had the honor of attending an #OutoftheDarkness Campus Walk at @oregonstate on behalf of @afsp_oregon_chapter. Over the past 6 years, I’ve given probably close to 100 #mentalhealth presentations through various NAMI chapters, AFSP Oregon, and last year, solo as a #disorderedeating educator. But this weekend was the first time I ever gave a speech at an event. Continuously sharing my story of losing my friend Peachy Paige to suicide in college, working for @afspnational from 2015-2019, and now serving on the AFSP Oregon Board of Directors is how I’ve been able to find healing. I want to live in a world where we lose fewer Peachy Paiges and we can do that by bringing mental health and suicide out of the darkness. 🍑🧡

Yesterday’s UMass Amherst Out of the Darkness Walk to prevent suicide was incredible. Despite the rainy start, the sky opened up and the sun was shining. I had my little guy Kyle with me and am so happy to be part of Team AFSPMA, meeting such amazing souls along the way, providing hope, healing, strength, and growth. The UMass active minds students were unreal with their dedication to bringing the campus walk back to UMass this year, and I couldn’t be more proud of their hard work especially Senior @elizabeth.tait 💙 3 more walks to go for our spring campus walks, then we shift to 8, possibly 9 community walks this fall. I am honored to join hundreds of thousands of people across the country who are walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks to prevent suicide and support AFSP's mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. For me, this walk is personal. In November of 2002, I lost my brother Allan to suicide. That day changed my world forever. Six months later, in April of 2003, I lost my brother Sam to suicide, and then shortly after, my father as well. Those days and the pain that I felt cut me to the very core, and I would never be the same. My goal is to raise $5,000 to give back to a cause that has given so much to me. The AFSP and the fight for suicide prevention is something that is closer to my heart than I can even put into words. The walk is important to me because I know what it's like to lose to suicide. It’s a feeling of loss that I never want anyone else to feel. Let's make a difference together and support this important cause. Your donation, no matter how small, can help save a life.
