Hellbenders have many predators, but their biggest threat is not predation. It’s us. People have altered and polluted their habitat. Since 1990, hellbenders that live in the Ozark Mountains have seen their numbers decline by more than 70%. Also known as snot otters, Hellbenders spend their whole lives in the water. Though capable of swimming, they rarely do so, preferring instead to walk along the bottom of streams. As you can see, they have tiny eyes. Hunting is primarily done at night and depends greatly on touch and smell rather than sight. Their main food source is crayfish. They lay clutches of 200-500 eggs and the male defends the nest until they hatch 6-8 weeks later. When they hatch they are about an inch long but can grow to over 2 feet, making them one of the world’s largest salamanders. Bear attack. I had unplugged the electic cord three days ago and failed to plug it back in. And it cost the lives of my breeding stock of heritage Narragansett turkeys. All were massacred and an entire bird is missing. 😭 Only one lone egg survived the slaughter, hidden in the straw in the corner. All the others in the nests had all been crushed and eaten. Thankfully I have eggs in the incubator already. I was so elated recently to spot and photograph my first painted bunting! Perhaps North America’s most beautifully colored bird, it was at the top of bird sighting wishlist. They only appear in a limited area of the southern plains during the summer, are very elusive, and they are targeted heavily by illegal pet traders during the winter when they reside in Central America. Turkey camp in southeast Missouri was unsuccessful in the woods but plenty successful in the memory department. Covered plenty of miles in the turkey woods, saw plenty of turtles, picked plenty of ticks, caught a smallmouth in a river system new to me, and even chased around a few gobbles, unfortunately to no avail. Two years into this pursuit, with two days left to hunt this season and the ‘dog days’ mindset has definitely begun to set in. Waking up at 3am to get out to the spot, that cringe feeling of a tick crawling on you and the constant itch that comes with the bites, not to mention the frustration that comes with the fact that I have yet to put down a bird. These are the things that don’t make the highlight reel. The things that are left out of the sunrise landscape and mid-morning nap sentiments that inevitably do keep us all coming back. They’re also the things that I’ll point to when I say it was all worth it, once I’m on the successful side of this pursuit. Midnight visitor It was chilly enough last night that all the dogs were holed up somewhere so this guy felt brave enough to wander through the yard checking things out. He came right up to the house right outside the window where I was watching him. It's one of the healthiest looking coyotes I've ever seen. I watched him for several minutes before he finally headed on up the road. I did open the window and holler at him before he left to let him know he had been caught. We are definitely noticing the squirrels getting fatter. After some googling, though, we discovered that they do not, in fact, hibernate, except for a few ground squirrels. They just gather up and hide a lot of food, for themselves and their babies that start being born in February, and layer on the fat for warmth. First true Salamander I have seen here. With the help of @salamanderscott, I have come to the somewhat conclusion that this is the larval stage of a Cave Salamander. It was only about an inch long and was found in a mountain creek with a spring flowing into it. Many do not know that Arkansas has one of the Largest Herds of Elk outside of the Rockies! In the early 1800s, elk roamed the lands of Arkansas and many of the eastern states in large herds! They were pushed westward over the 1800s and into the 1900s but it is believed the Eastern Elk went extinct somewhere in the middle of that time.
