This week, our Saturday #Drawingclass and Wednesday #ArtExplorations class were inspired by the colours and patterns of #paintedelephants . In South Asia, elephants have a long history of being decorated with paint, garlands, and colourful fabrics. The #JaipurElephantFestival is one example of a festival where elephants are decorated and paraded through the streets as a celebration of their strength, beauty, and cultural significance. For this project, our young artists used #oilpastelsgraffito to create subtly patterned elephants, and then added more patterns and background decoration using oil pastels, watercolour paint, and paint splatter. Pintados con pigmentos de llamativos colores a manos de artistas profesionales y convertidos en pesadas obras de arte son guiados por sus cuidadores los mahout que en la actualidad solo utilizan un bastón de madera para controlarlos y no un gancho afilado, el ankus como se hacía antiguamente. El festival del elefante es uno de los eventos más populares de Jaipur donde estos paquidermos se convierten en protagonistas: carreras de elefantes, pruebas de fuerza, bodas o partidos de polo sobre los mismos son algunas de las atracciones que pueden verse. A pesar de formar parte de un negocio turístico rentable su futuro parece incierto lo que motiva que grupos de defensa de estos animales manifiesten su malestar e indignación por el trato y explotación que reciben. At some stage during my journey I have worked with all of Ireland’s major mental health charities, not only as a fundraiser but also sending the message from school pupils to CEOs that it’s ‘Ok not to feel Ok sometimes’, and ‘it’s absolutely ok to talk about it and ask for help’. As part of my own journey, I have also trained and qualified as a psychotherapist so I can understand more about what ails me and others like me. At the core of Brent Pope, is the belief that, given I have a public persona, I can lend a voice to those who don’t have one, and in doing so help make others’ lives better. And if I touch or save just one person in a room from going to the same dark places that I have been to, then my role is fulfilled. Took a wallk down to old Leigh town to be greeted by these absolutely beautiful stunning painted elephants. Especially lovely on a miserable rainy day. The theme is called Herd in the City , supporting Havens Hospice. The elephants can be found all the way up to Shoeburyness , in varoius parts of the towns totalling 46 full size and 72 baby elephants, so great to go hunting for them. I did notice one in my local shopping parade the other day in Leigh as I drove by and you certainly can’t miss them. Made and painted by various local and national artists. Both professional and amature artists took part in this project. All of the large elephants will be auctioned off and the smaller elephants will be placed into schools. Shall I bid for a large elephant for my garden 🤣look great on my balcony. If you come to Southend, you will find them on an Elephants trail, starting from Leigh on Sea, Chalkwell, Southend, Thorpe Bay, Shoeburyness. I have finally finished these two beauties. The shape may be familiar to you as I have done two elephants before but they weren't jolly enough for me so I started over. Using inspiration from the painted elephants of India and flowers that my friend gave me I created what my brain had decided to do. There are two big differences about these two elephants and that is they they aren't captive and have both got their tusks, for however pretty painted elephants are, the truth is they may not be happy, these two most definitely are. So this painting sends a message of freedom and beauty. Dr. Willard Wigan who is one of the artists in our family (of which I am extremely honoured to be part of) is currently creating his microscopic masterpieces based on The Disappearing World. Focusing on those animals that are endangered species. 'According to the WWF, there are approximately 415,000 African elephants left in the world. There are around 40,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants left. As previously stated, the ivory trade, habitat loss, poaching and elephant-human conflict pose threats to elephant populations.' They are Indian elephants, not African, as their ears are small and I suspect they were made in India. Elmer at the Elephant A absolutely loved finding all the Elmer sculptures on this trail today! We got the trail map from Walworth Library (also popped in and borrowed some books - not been to that library before!) and she was super keen to find them all. Number 8 initially escaped our attention, but we found it eventually, after we'd played at Elephant Springs, much to A's delight! I didn't ask her to pose for any of these pics - this was all her! She just loved this 🐘🎨🖌️🌈 Great little day out with this trail, the natural water and sand play and little playgrounds dotted around...There's a certificate to download when they complete the trail too - very cute! Beautiful mural in the streets of Udaipur, showing off the famous style of Rajasthani painting, and the elaborate jewels bedecking the elephant! One finds the most exquisite murals adorning the walls, framing entrances and windows, creating an bright and colorful atmosphere. These decorations were applied during festivals, marriage ceremonies. In ancient times Mewar rulers had these murals painted to portray their glory and determination, establishing their heritage. Murals around entrances were believed to create a harmonious passage, seeking a spiritual blessing and cut off evil. In India one sees animals, such as cows, camels, horses and elephants ornamented with jewellery. Primarily this had/has an amuletic purpose. Elephants, protected in steel and gilded armor, played a vital role in warfare. Magnificently bejewelled elephants would take part in ceremonial processions, ridden by the raja, the ornamented head, neck, tusk and trunk befitting the monarchs dignity! We have been learning about painted elephants from Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. There were a lot of steps involved throughout this process and the year 2s and 3s have produced some really great art work so far. We just have to finish decorating our elephants with bright coloured crayons and scrunching up some Pom Pom balls then they’ll be done!
