And I had the honour of being one of the translators! 🐮🐷🐔🐰🐵 Animal Liberation is a classic in philosophy and the animal rights movement literature. Published for the first time in 1975, it has never stopped being in print since then. 📖 In this almost entirely revised version, Peter Singer describes the progress made by the animal movement since Animal Liberation was first published, as well as the long way we still have to go to build a more just world for every sentient creature. 🥩💉He details the factory-farming and animal experimentation practices that are still standard in many countries and offers a clear philosophical reasoning as to why our current treatment of non-human animals cannot go on any longer. 🌱 This book is of particular significance for me, because I became vegan more than five years ago thanks to its author. If you have read my book, maybe you will have noticed that I make extensive references to Animal Liberation Now in my chapter about anti-speciesism. I firmly believe in philosophy’s power to start, and fuel, our commitments to important causes. Het hoofdstuk over proefdieren was schokkend. Wat een onnodige wreedheid wordt er begaan in de naam van de wetenschap. 🥺 Sinds de oorspronkelijke publicatie in 1975 heeft dit baanbrekende werk miljoenen mensen bewust gemaakt van het bestaan van SPECIËSISME. Dat is discriminatie op basis van soort. Het geloof dat mensen meer waard zijn dan andere dieren en dat de belangen van mensen boven de belangen van dieren gaan. Onze kijk op dieren is gebaseerd op een lange geschiedenis van vooroordelen en willekeurige discriminatie. Dit boek gaat over de tirannie van de mens over niet-menselijke dieren. Deze tirannie zorgt tot op de dag van vandaag nog steeds voor heel veel pijn en lijden dat alleen vergeleken kan worden met wat de eeuwen van tirannie van blank tegen zwart heeft voortgebracht. Dieren hebben daarbij nog een extra handicap t.o.v. onze gekleurde medemens. Ze zijn niet in staat om hun eigen vrijheid op te eisen, te protesteren tegen hun leefomstandigheden d.m.v. stemmen of boycots. Gaan we door met deze tirannie tegenover niet-menselijke dieren? Stoics value community cohesion and community service, and find ways to be grateful for their life circumstances. In my Intro to Ethics course, I teach a class session on Peter Singer’s article “Famine, Affluence, and Morality.” Singer discusses the problem of world hunger and world disease, and challenges us to radically rethink our notions of charity. According to him, giving maximally is a moral obligation and is not “superogatory” (nice, but not morally required). Many of my students are low-income and some suffer from food and housing insecurity. In our class session on Singer, I challenge those who are not suffering from food or housing insecurity or otherwise concerned about meeting their basic needs to consider the idea of donating $5 this year towards addressing world hunger and disease. (I do not instruct them to do this, but rather propose it as an idea to consider). One idea I float is donating to @givewellorganization , which administers malaria shots in sub-Saharan Africa at low cost. Community service is a big focus of my life, and I tell students that it is something that makes us feel useful, purposeful, and happy. Some students object to this proposal on the premise that, even if they aren’t suffering from food or housing insecurity, $5 means a lot more to them than it does to extremely wealthy people. One student proposed that low-income individuals should not donate to charity, because the contributions of extremely wealthy people (if they donated maximally, or at least much more than they currently do) would be sufficient to address problems of world hunger and disease. This begs two questions: 1) is this true? I’m not an economist and I don’t know. 2) if you are not extremely wealthy, is charity an important part of your life, and if so do you find that it enhances your sense of usefulness, purposefulness, and happiness? Animal cruelty: why do we look the other way? We love our rashers and our sausages and our chicken wings and chicken nuggets. Knowing about the exploitation, abuse and suffering behind that sausage and that chicken nugget could result in us having to give up the eating habit of a lifetime. So, best not to look; indeed, best to look the other way. FACTORY FARMING IS A HIDDEN INDUSTRY – We may have an inkling that all is not right down on the farm, but because the animals are never seen, we can, and do, turn a blind eye. A LIFE WORTH LIVING – We have a moral duty to give all farmed animals a life free from exploitation, abuse, suffering and pain. They are, after all, giving up their precious lives to become rashers and sausages, chicken wings and chicken nuggets. ANIMAL SENTIENCE – All farmed animals are sentient, that is, they experience a wide range of emotions and can feel pain, just like us. We know this, and yet we turn a blind eye. We can do better. Contrary to a 2008 EU Directive, the tails of almost all pigs are docked shortly after birth. If tail-docking isn’t carried out, the pigs will bite and chew the tails of other pigs, resulting in open wounds, probable infection, and economic loss to the producer. The docking, or cutting off, of a piglet’s tail is painful and is typically carried out without any pain relief by clippers, pliers or by cauterisation (burning off). Council Directive 2008/120/EC states: "Neither tail-docking nor reduction of corner teeth must be carried out routinely but only where there is evidence that injuries to sows's teats or to other pig's ears or tails have occurred.” Pigs, naturally, live in small social groups, outdoors. In modern-day pig farming, pigs are raised in large numbers in crowded sheds and, with nothing to occupy their curious minds, in-fighting is inevitable. In addition to tail docking, they often have their teeth clipped. WE DON’T EAT DOGS because we love them and they love us back. We take them for walks. They sleep at the end of our beds. They are our non-judgemental, ever-loyal companions, offering unconditional love which, let’s face it, is pretty irresistible. Dogs are embedded in our lives and treated as part of the family. We don’t farm them because it would be a little like farming our friends, and we don’t farm our friends. The very thought of chopping up a dog and frying its body parts in a pan is abhorrent. Unless you live in Korea. PIGS & CHICKENS &OPTIMAL ANIMAL WELFARE SOLUTIONS We can continue to farm pigs, provided the animals are raised in smaller groups, on solid floors with straw or other material for bedding and rooting, with permanent access to an extensive outdoor environment, with straw-filled huts for shelter, and sow stalls and farrowing crates a thing of the dark and shameful past. Sows must be able to enjoy a better quality of life – building nests, rooting, wallowing in mud, foraging – all important components of what a pig needs. Chickens, too, must be able to enjoy a better quality of life. Raised in much smaller groups, with permanent access to fresh air and green spaces, with tree and shrub cover, where they can practice natural behaviours (pecking, scratching, foraging). Because they will grow slower and can exercise, they will not suffer as much from brittle bone syndrome, and they will be healthier animals, living a little longer, usually up to about 8 weeks. Lawrence Krauss writes ✍️⁠ ⁠ Frans de Waal, one of the world’s preeminent primatologists, passed away on 14 March 2024, at the age of 75. He was the Charles Howard Candler Professor Emeritus of Psychology and former director of the Living Links Center for the Advanced Study of Ape and Human Evolution at the Emory National Primate Research Center. ⁠ ⁠ His passing is a loss not just for his family and friends, but for science and society more broadly. De Waal’s death ends a career that showed what science can accomplish at its very best, by changing our perspective on ourselves and our place in the cosmos.⁠ ⁠ Frans was more than just a colleague and friend to me. He was a teacher. I count myself among the innumerable people who were impacted by his writing and lecturing in clear and explicit ways.⁠ ⁠ That is why I don’t feel that it is inappropriate for me to pen this brief memorial, even though I am a theoretical physicist and Frans was a primatologist. After all, like me, Frans believed that science is not compartmentalized into completely separate fields with no areas in common. Fields of scientific knowledge overlap and they are all united by the joy of discovery. ⁠ ⁠ Indeed, Frans was a professor in a psychology department, even though he was a biologist by training—a background that affected his outlook on both his own work and on that of his colleagues.
