In celebration of the 34th anniversary of the launch of the legendary Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers took a snapshot of the Little Dumbbell Nebula (also known as Messier 76, M76, or NGC 650/651) located 3400 light-years away in the northern circumpolar constellation Perseus. M76 is classified as a planetary nebula. This is a misnomer because it is unrelated to planets. But its round shape suggested it was a planet to astronomers who first viewed it through low-power telescopes. In reality, a planetary nebula is an expanding shell of glowing gases that were ejected from a dying red giant star. The star eventually collapses to an ultra-dense, hot white dwarf. Abell 31 is a very faint planetary nebula about 2000 light years away. It is mostly hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue/teal). The nebula was formed when a dying star, about twice the size of our sun, known as a Wolf-Rayet star, shed its outer layers of gas and dust. The intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the star ionized the surrounding gases, causing them to emit ionized hydrogen and doubly ionized oxygen (Oiii) The central star of WR102 is a hot, compact object known as a white dwarf. It has a surface temperature of around 120,000 degrees Celsius and is rapidly cooling down as it ages. The intense radiation from the white dwarf causes the surrounding gas to expand at high speeds, creating intricate patterns and structures within the nebula. @deepskychile #deepskychile #abell31 #planetarynebula #nebula

The Cat’s Eye Nebula in Optical and X-ray Image Credit: NASA ESA Hubble Legacy Archive Chandra X-ray Obs. To some it looks like a cat’s eye. To others, perhaps like a giant cosmic conch shell. It is actually one of the brightest and most highly detailed planetary nebula known, composed of gas expelled in the brief yet glorious phase near the end of life of a Sun-like star. This nebula’s dying central star may have produced the outer circular concentric shells by shrugging off outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. The formation of the beautiful, complex-yet-symmetric inner structures, however, is not well understood. The featured image is a composite of a digitally sharpened Hubble Space Telescope image with X-ray light captured by the orbiting Chandra Observatory. The exquisite floating space statue spans over half a light-year across. Of course, gazing into this Cat’s Eye, humanity may well be seeing the fate of our sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution ... in about 5 billion years. . . #SpaceArt #NebulaBeauty #HubbleSpaceTelescope #ChandraObservatory #AstronomyArt #CosmicWonders #AstroPhotography #NebulaArt #SpaceExploration #StellarBeauty #NASAESA #GalacticMarvels #CosmicConchShell #PlanetaryNebula #NebulaPhotography #CatEyeNebula #XrayAstronomy #SpaceInspiration #CelestialArtistry #NebulaFascination

Ever feel like you’re being watched? It’s easy to see why NGC 6751 is also known as the Glowing Eye Nebula. This Hubble Space Telescope image combines data taken with three different color filters that isolate gases of different temperatures. Blue regions mark the hottest glowing gas, which forms a roughly circular ring around the central stellar remnant. Orange and red show the locations of cooler gas. The cool gas tends to lie in long streamers pointing away from the central star, and in a surrounding, tattered-looking ring at the outer edge of the nebula. Credit: NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage Team. #nebula #PlanetaryNebula #eye #eyeball #Hubble #HubbleClassic #astronomy ALT TEXT: A round nebula resembles the iris of a human eye and takes up most of the frame. A clumpy outer ring appears in shades of yellow-orange. Inside it, clumpy filaments of milky blue with pink highlights extend toward the center. At the middle of the nebula sits a bright, yellowish star. The nebula is on the black background of space and a handful of other stars are within the field of view.

Planetary Nebulae HFG1 & Abell 6 in Cassiopeia FriendsofNASA.org | High-res image: https://lnkd.in/g6fjnEMh Planetary nebulae like Heckathorn-Fesen-Gull 1 (HFG1) and Abell 6 in the constellation Cassiopeia are remnants from the last phase of a medium sized star like our Sun. In spite of their shapes, planetary nebulae have nothing in common with actual planets. Located in the bottom left part of the featured photo, HFG1 was created by the binary star system V664 Cas. It consists of a white dwarf star and a red giant star. Both stars orbit their center of mass over about half an Earth day. Traveling with the entire nebula at a speed about 300 times faster than the fastest train on Earth, V664 Cas generates a bluish arc shaped shock wave. The wave interacts most strongly with the surrounding interstellar medium in the areas where the arc is brightest. After roughly 10,000 years, planetary nebulae become invisible due to a lack of ultraviolet light being emitted by the stars that create them. Displaying beautiful shapes and structures, planetary nebulae are highly desired objects for astrophotographers. Planetary Nebula HFG1 in Cassiopeia | Mayall Telescope FriendsofNASA.org | High-res image: https://lnkd.in/gCphWEpQ This image was obtained with the wide-field view of the Mosaic camera on the 4-meter Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. HFG1 is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It was produced by a binary star system (V664 Cas) that is moving rapidly through our Galaxy. The star is moving towards the upper-right of the image. As HFG1 plows through the interstellar medium, a bluish bowshock is produced; and a red trail of gas is left behind in its wake. The image was generated with observations in the Hydrogen alpha (red) and Oxygen [OIII] (blue) filters. In this image, North is down and East is to the right. Distance: ~3,100 light years The Nicholas U. Mayall Telescope is a four-meter (158 inches) reflector telescope in Arizona named after Nicholas U. Mayall. It saw first light on February 27, 1973, and was the second-largest telescope in the world at that time. Credit: T.A. Rector (University of Alaska Anchorage) and H. Jones-Emberson 1 also known as the headphones nebula 🎧 is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Lynx. It was only discovered in 1939 on photographic plates as it's a difficult object to see through an eyepiece. A new target for me, had to manually input the location as I couldn't find it in NINA's catalogs. Decided to invest in a filter draw after dropping my camera on the floor when changing the filter on the second night 😳 thankfully it still seems to be working fine. 🔭 Celestron Edge 8HD with 0.7x reducer 📷 ZWO ASI533MC pro with Lextreme filter 🗓️ 2021-04-07/08/09/10 ⌛ 104x180s #headphonesnebula #jonesemberson1 #celestron #asi533mcpro #planetarynebula #nebula #space #Astrophotography

I wanted to capture some of the faint details of this nebula, so I took over 40 hours of photographs, most were 15-minute exposures. The Medusa nebula is located 1,500 light years away in the Gemini constellation. The nebula is being formed as the central star sheds its out layers, releasing gasses such as hydrogen and oxygen. It's the result of the slow death of a star! Photographed using a Planewave CDK14 telescope with QHY600M camera, and Planewave L350 mount. This is an HOO image with LRGB stars. HII emission nebula Sh2-129 with the large but extremely faint planetary nebula OU4 (also known as the "Squid Nebula") in the Cepheus constellation. There are way better images of OU4 around on the web, but those images were acquired with exposure times of tens or even hundreds of hours, sometimes collected by several observers simultaneously. In contrast, the exposure time of this image was only 3:17 hours. The stars were removed with the software Starnet++, which allowed for an excessive contrast enhancement of the green and blue channel showing the OIII emission. The red channel shows the much brighter H-alpha emission of Sh2-129. Swipe to see the outline of OU4 marked by white lines (image 2) and the OIII channel as a grayscale image (image 3).
