I have felt uncomfortable for a long time with the meditation practice of tethering deep into the Earth with a golden cord and releasing through the cord any energy we wish to release. I have felt a lot of resistance with this practice feeling like itās a metaphor for the way in which capitalism has utilized the Earth. When asked to tether once in a charged and vulnerable space, within my heart I asked the Earth, is this ok? The Earth answered that in order to have an energy exchange in this way, myself (and many others) have got to learn how to listen in a radically different way. To listen deeper than ever before. To listen beyond what I, we, know possible. It was after this that I started making Plant Friends zines (this wasnāt our first tango, by far, the plants and I). Eclipse Season, or āHow to love Tower Timesā šššš„ The Tower in Tarot is a card that many people would rather reshuffle. Itās a representation of shake-upās, big changes, the crisis point, the collapse, exhaustion, destruction. When you look at the totality of the story Tarot tells and all the archetypes here, Tower is such an important aspect of our lives. Ego deaths are painful. Breakups and disaster can be devastating. Burnout is real and cannot be āpushed throughā- thatās how you know itās burnout. The crisis before an identity shift (as seen in the next card, The Star) can be excruciating. But sometimes (often) you know youāre in a Tower moment when what collapses is only something you THOUGHT you needed. The harder you hold on, the harder you fall. After a series of Tower times, a person can learn to get grounded even when the earth beneath their feet is crumbling. We recognize that rumbling sound and say: oh, I must let go again. All the excess is swept away. We become grounded in the essential truths and natures that are all we ever have to begin with. It is after the Towerās crumbling that we gain perspective. You can manifest Tower energy by doing cord cutting, or shadow work, or trauma therapy (all symbolically speaking, of course). The eclipses also bring Tower feels. You do not have to be a victim of this energy. March Meet the Maker: Challenge So I guess one of the most challenging aspects for me is having to be āonā and ready to answer peoples questions in the moment. I am not a great conversationalist or a people person by any stretch of the imagination, though I do try really hard to be friendly and interact like a ānormalā human being. Itās very hard. Also it takes me a bit to process what people are saying and usually I think of the answer 6 hours later. š Sorry, the selling part is hard, as is the techy computer website stuff. I have a Community Garden plot, which is currently in the off season. Iāve been unlocking the gate and roaming the abandoned lanes, breathing deeply the mist-heavy leaf smell of the mountain in winter. Last year I started gardening in the height of summer, my plot a rescue. It was July and I literally won the lottery- years on a wait list opened up a spot two shakes from my home. I poured my heart into that space under the stinging July sun, my ramshackle heart made a ramshackle garden, with lots of help for a body that protested the novel movements of shovels, trowels, hauling soil, excavating boulders. It was hard and overwhelming and completely joyful. It was hard for me to meet so many new people and remember their faces and names. It was hard for me to look them in the eye. It was hard to tell the gardening community when I couldnāt do work days because I was in a chronic pain flare, or more than once from social anxiety. But in that space, I have the space to be myself in community. Thatās been rare! I belonged there as much as I belong anywhere, I kept rolling my heart forward and rolling up my sleeves. Did you know IG is muting folks for using the word Autism as against community guidelines? We already know Gaz@ and LGB1Q and tr@ans and all the flags and wa1ermelons. Listen- we can all leave this app but the algo is just a reflection of our own biases. I miss something essential the mo I think Iām above having biases. Algorithm is a mirror. šŖ Iāve been unlocking the gate this February and walking the abandoned rows of the community garden, praying life to dream through my hands, broadening the borders of my mental map of the place. In all the ways itās hard, we show up. We learn and relearn how to be together. We find spaces where our differences are just another line in the story that reveal our hearts. Gardening these last 3 and a half years has been the greatest joy I have ever had. It is my peaceful place and it is beautiful when you can share with the community what you grow and teach friends, family, and children how to nurture the earth. I have grown strawberries, eggplant, carrots, sugar babies, squash,lettuce,sweet potatoes, cabbage,collard greens, onions, tomatoes , peppers, grapes and a variety of herbs. The first illustration for Plant Friends Vol. 3- the nasturtiums šš§”- was inspired by the path me & the kiddo I nannied for used to walk every day to the park. He was 2.5, then 3, then 4 in my care- pandemic years. We had enough time to have many happy memories and many mutual frustrations, many long stretches of boredom and many magical moments. Kids, people, the way of things. The way to the park was just that: to the park was always FULL of excitement, possibility, running, fun, attention, silly conversation. Walking home, he would often be tired and walking real slow. We often invented games on the way home- trying to get that feeling of playfulness back for the (uphill, even) trek. One day, N was particularly grumpy. I gave his grumpy moods a lot of space because, well, all feelings welcome, but the walk home was becoming a struggle. Quite out of the blue, he began telling every tree we passed that he LOVED it- in a loud, exaggerated announcement. š It brightened both our moods. Soon enough he was loudly announcing his love for all things in our path: the street, the rocks, the birds, the houses, the driveways, the cars, the leaves blown into gutters, the gutters, the stop signs and each flower he had a name for. Kids are genius creators. He didnāt want me to talk, so I sagely walked along- a student in all ways, bearing witness to his 4 year old wisdom of loving kindness for all things. That path for us was lined with nasturtiums, which were in bloom. It was Autumn. This summer my Instagram vacation ran over, from July well into September. And it was because my heart was head over heels in my first community garden space, where I had the chance- rare for me as long as I have lived in cities- to plant things in the actual dirt in the actual ground, watch them grow, tend to the space, and challenge my skills. I hadnāt gardened like this since childhood, when I guess you could say (if this is language you use) I encountered my first special interest. My garden became the backdrop to the summer, daily meditation, continuous vex and abundant blessing, and a small community of real life people not on screens. Most things I do are now on screens. (When did my life go careening in this direction?) I needed help quite often and was pushed outside my comfort zone to ask. It was a sharing garden, for sure- full of volunteers, gifts, and rescue plants. A dye garden, a tea garden. I started writing, then drawing again in that space. My heart, body, soul all needed it, even with my injuries and joints flaring. Still. Drank it in! Before this, I was on the wait list for years. I donāt just make Mugwort pillows, I also cultivate Mugwort- several varieties! Though Iāve typically been an apartment dweller here in PDX, so have had a container garden for some time, my Mugwort babes are going strong after years! Artemisia Vulgaris (common Mugwort) really wants to be planted in the ground- where is has a tendency to take over. I also have an Artemisia lactiflora āGuizhouā, a rare variety I bought several years ago at Portland Nursery. This Mugwort is doing amazing in its pot, and nearly as tall as me! Plant sitting. It's an extra task I hadn't planned for this week but when you're mother goes on holiday to France and tells you how much time and energy they've put into lovingly growing these alluring plants from cuttings, you have to step in. I got entranced by the beauty of these deep purple leaves from the Coleus plant just like my mum did too and I've been training them to spend more time outdoors over this week. Although definitely not native to our fine fenland I couldn't resist observing and drawing them for my final pieces for the @fiercetalesart show and I'm super pleased with how this new triptych piece turned out. Here they are drying with their final coat of archival fixative. My sister gave me this book, and it blew me away. Unlike similar-themed ecology books like Braiding Sweetgrass (love) and Entangled Life, Simardās autobiographical memoir leaves behind poetic language and gives you a dense education of history, family lineage, science of forests and and unflinching look at misogyny. She doesnāt even spell it out for you she just tells you the timeline and boy, is it rich. This epic book was hard to get into at first, but by the middle-end I couldnāt put it down, and was cheering for Suzanne time and time again as she followed intuitive & well-hewn observational leads about the ways trees were communicating and taking care of each other. All the history and back drop makes sense by the time sheās observing clear cuts and the subsequent plantings dying. Of course she wasnāt believed. Of course she was ridiculed. Itās brilliant and beautiful the way she was right. You may also believe yourself a little more by the end, you might think about your own lineage and how that informs the liberation work you are doing in the world. Gardens can be created in any size or shape. This was my garden in our old house, an area 12ā by 8ā where I grew Kale, jalapeƱos, potatoes , tomatillos, lettuce and squash. I used large pots for tomatoes and had a couple of lemons trees and a persimmon tree. I loved our little backyard. We grew all the things we like in small quantities.
