Let's talk about the trap of perfectionism. In her book "Dare to Lead," Brené Brown wrote: “People are opting out of vital conversations about diversity and inclusivity because they fear looking wrong, saying something wrong, or being wrong. Choosing our own comfort over hard conversations is the epitome of privilege, and it corrodes trust and moves us away from meaningful and lasting change.” As I’ve said many times before, we’re bound to make mistakes on the journey to be better allies. It’s uncharted, uncomfortable territory for many of us. Yet we shouldn’t hold ourselves back, even though we may mess up. We need to take action to create more inclusive workplaces and cultures where everyone can do their best work and thrive. I appreciate these uplifting words from @ohhappydani: “5 things to remind yourself of after making a mistake: * I did the best I could with the information I had at the time. * Mistakes are natural bumps on the journey of being human. * Perfection is unattainable & a gruel standard to hold myself to. * My learnings will become a blueprint for future decisions. * This moment does not define me. On this day in history, April 29th, in 1945, during World War II, American soldiers liberated the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. The Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany, intended to hold political prisoners. It was opened in 1933, shortly after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor. Over the years, it expanded to include forced labor and eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, ordinary German and Austrian criminals, and eventually foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. The camp served as a model for all later concentration camps and as a “school of violence” for the SS men who operated it. The camp system was one of the key instruments of terror, and Dachau was a central symbol of the Nazi regime’s brutality and its murderous agenda against many groups, including Jews, political dissidents, and others. By the time of its liberation on April 29, 1945, by the U.S. Seventh Army’s 45th Infantry Division, more than 200,000 people had been detained in the camp and its subsidiary camps. At least 28,000 prisoners died there, with thousands more suffering from malnutrition and disease. The liberation of Dachau is particularly significant because it brought to light the extent of the Holocaust and the Nazi regime’s systematic approach to genocide and oppression. "When you begin to lift weights, you will NOT automatically end up looking like a bodybuilder." #louderforthepeopleintheback It's about time we burst this bubble. This misconception unfortunately leads to some folks fearing doing something that is actually hugely beneficial. Avoiding certain exercises just because there is a misplaced fear that those muscles will give them a particular aesthetic can lead us into some speed bumps. Just weights alone do not equal mass - It takes time, intention, and focus. There are many benefits such as building stronger bones, general strength and moving easier that have nothing to do with aesthetics, AND the mental health benefits that quite frankly aren't talked about enough either. The good brain chemicals that come from resistance training, watching yourself getting better, the energy discharge that you need before/after a stressful day, and the confidence boost from overcoming something that was previously challenging - just to name a few 😉 TLDR; unless you are absolutely juiced to the gills and training like a professional bodybuilder, you won't get as 'bulky' or 'muscular' as much as you're worrying about. All sorts of emotions as I leave Bucaramanga. I came to share the things I’ve learned being given the privilege of so many child athletes and their families who have shared their stories with me so we can collectively be change-makers. I came to create more allies for kids in cheer. Preparing intensely before to do all I could to pass this information on to the uber-talented, choreographers of Spirit FX! We need more “Child Athlete Advocates” in the world and this week I had the honor to meet 30 of them. They BLEW MY MIND away. They are each such a bright light in an industry that needs them. Their hearts were as big as their lists of talents! Tag someone who has been there for you during a hard time, and save for when you need to show up for a loved one in a trauma informed way. Allies are the first line of defense when it comes to a survivor’s recovery. Although this may sound over-the-top, I promise you it’s not. The way you respond when a survivors confides in you, can make or break their recovery. That’s a lot of pressure, I know. So swipe for some simple steps to guide you in the process.🫶🏼 An ally is someone who stands alongside a survivor and grants empathetic support, rather than just sympathy. Empathy says, “I’m sorry that happened to you, how can I support you and help you navigate your pain?” Sympathy says, “I’m sorry that happened to you, that’s life. You’ll get through it.” Empathy requires effort, sympathy requires nothing.
