For pelagic birds, opportunism is the name of the game and few embody it quite like the Pomarine Jaeger (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴). Jaegers (called skuas in Europe) are the pirates of the bird world, plundering and pillaging wherever they go. Around baitfish schools or behind fishing vessels, it’s not uncommon to find a jaeger swooping in to steal hard-earned catches from a gull, tern, or gannet. Their superior agility to clunkier gulls, narrow hooked beak, and bulky size make them formidable adversaries, sometimes even overpowering and killing smaller seabirds! Just like most pirates, jaegers spend a good portion of their lives at sea and usually only making landfall to breed (also like most pirates…) in remote areas of the Arctic. It’s thereby actually pretty uncommon to see an individual as close and for as long as we were afforded by this immature Pomarine that followed our wake for a good 20-30 minutes on a pelagic with @capemaywhalewatch_researchctr We even got to see it harass this Nelson’s Gull (𝘩𝘺𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘹 𝘎𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘎𝘶𝘭𝘭) out of a meal! Págalo pomarino (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴) Una ave que pude observar varias veces desde costa, durante la migración otoñal de marinas. Pero nada comparable a tenerlos volando sobre mi cabeza en una salida en barco. El pomarino, como todos los de su familia, practica a menudo el cleptoparasitismo, persigue y acosa a otras aves (sobre todo a gaviotas y charranes) para robar su comida. Ya podéis ver en la primera foto que las gaviotas y él no se llevan especialmente bien. Esta especie se reproduce en zonas polares, más al Norte incluso que otros págalos, y se dirige a pasar el invierno en aguas del hemisferio Sur. Labbe pomarin ~ Pomarine Jaeger (Stercorarius pomarinus) 3 Novembre 2023 "Sabordage en vue" Cette fois-ci, on part à la suite d'une autre espèce du genre Stercorarius. 🪶 Le Labbe pomarin est un intermédiaire chez les labbes en matière d'allure. Il est plus massif (voire ventru) que le labbe parasite. Mais il ne possède pas l'envergure du Grand Labbe. 📏 À la fois bon pêcheur et charognard. Il se révèle par contre particulièrement violent dans ces phases de cleptoparasitisme. N'hésitant pas à tuer les oiseaux marins qu'il poursuit au passage. 🦅 Sur ces zones de reproduction dans la toundra Arctique. Sa principale source d'alimentation concerne les lemmings. This one took a team of birders to ID, the closest jaeger that flew by us in the afternoon was this juvenile pomarine jaeger. Juvenile jaegers are difficult to ID and key features are: blunt central tail feathers, double white flash in the under wing, bulky bill and chunky bird overall. Jumping out of an airplane with a parachute attached to your back, swimming with sharks in the ocean, and chasing a rare bird are equally exhilarating in my opinion. I know, I know chasing the rare bird is more enthralling than the rest (😬). Going after this bird was a gamble because I only had a short window of time on this morning. Thus, I did the sensible thing and began my journey before the sun rose. This particular spot isn’t terribly far from my house so I thought leaving at 430am was a fantastic idea. Upon starting my journey, my GPS slapped me back into reality. I completely overlooked the fact that “everyone and their mother” frequent this route in the summer. Anyways, while I sat in bumper to bumper traffic my inner thoughts almost overcome me (as they usually do on a long drive). I cogitated about arriving at an empty beach that was void of birds. What if the tide wasn’t right? What if I got a flat tire?? Did I put my memory card back in my camera??? Upon arriving at my destination, I walked onto the cool sand and immediately spotted a feathered oddity as it preened in the intertidal zone. This offshore guest cooperated for some time before drifting off to the other bank of the inlet. Ara, quan surto a mar, també somio de veure uns altres pirates, els paràsits. En funció de la seva mida, persegueixen gavines, gavians o xatracs per fer-los deixar anar el peix que puguin haver capturat i endur-se'l ells, talment fossin els assaltants d'una fragata espanyola o britànica al Carib. Aquest paràsit cuaample ens va fer una visita fugaç, com pertoca a un pirata experimentat, però va fer el somni realitat. Now, when I go out to sea, I also dream of seeing other pirates, the jaegers. Depending on their size, they chase seagulls or terns to make them release any fish they may have caught and take it with them, much like raiders on a Spanish or British frigate in the Caribbean. Sovint simplifiquem el coneixement que tenim d'una persona amb una determinada habilitat o comportament. A base de repetir-nos-ho, no ens donem l'oportunitat de conéixer-la realment com és. Amb els ocells ens pot passar el mateix. Els paràsits estan marcats per la manera com s'alimenten durant l'època hivernal, quan viuen a alta mar i roben el peix que han pescat gavines, gavots i, fins i tot, mascarells, perseguint-los i agredint-los. El nom que els hem posat no genera cap dubte. Però, pel que fa a l'alimentació, els paràsits tenen una doble vida. A la primavera i l'estiu es desplacen per criar a la tundra àrtica, on trien llocs que acullen grans poblacions de lemmings. Amb vols a poca alçada, perxats en talaies que els permeten controlar els caus o, simplement, expoliant aquests caus excavant els sostres sorrencs, els paràsits capturen els lèmmings emprant únicament el seu bec, ja que no tenen urpes de rapinyaire. Aquests rosegadors poden arribar a significar el 90% de la seva dieta durant tota la temporada reproductora. D'aquesta manera, ajuden a prevenir la superpoblació i a millorar la salut de les poblacions de lemmings. Complementen la seva dieta amb ous i polls d'altres espècies. El paràsit cuaample és molt més que un paràsit. És un lladregot amb ànima de rapinyaire i la seva funció en l'ecosistema va molt més enllà que mantenir les gavines a dieta. The Animals of #easterisland #rapanui Pt 8: Continuing from the post from the day before yesterday, the animals of Easter island from dolphins, to lobsters, to it's unique fish are illustrated in the art of the original Polynesian settlers. They are of great significance in terms of mythology, symbolism & traditions, & rituals. Of all the surrounding ocean biodiversity, the islands 2 iconic turtle species. Legend attests that when the island's 1st king, Hotu Matu passed away, his spirit became the sea turtle or 'Honu' in Rapa Nui. In not sure which is king, but this threatened ocean biodiversity hotspot is a bastion for both the #endangered #greenseaturtle & the critically endangered hawksbill turtle.Though there's no native land mammals on Rapa Nui, there's some impressive sea mammals, that dwell or pass near by. A survey by R. Hucke-Gaete, 14 found 12 species belonging to 5 biological families, drawn from 2 mammalian orders: there's Cetaceans, better known as whales & dolphins & pinnipeds or seals. In the 1st set, researchers found, classes at 'Least Concern' bottlenose & common dolphin, Blainville's beaked, humpback, Cuvier's beaked, pilot whale & Minke whale which they were unable to positively identify. It could be the 'LC' Northern or the 'Near Threatened' Southern variety, which dispute their names are both found in the North & South. In the more endangered groups, the survey also found 'NT' false killer whales, 'Vunerable' sperm whales & blue whale, unidentified minke whale , sperm whale & endangered blue whales. Amid the seal set, Rapa Nui is home to both southern elephant & leopard seals, both of which are listed as 'Least Concern'. This is the last post that will be going up on Rap Nui wildlife for a month or 2. When the series returns, pre human Rapa Nui & the impact of island's pre-imperialist colonization on local wildlife. The 'Ecocide' hypothesis associated with US geographer / Pop scientist J. Diamond, who blamed the Rapi Nui people for their own Colonial era genocide, will be debunked. After which the Colonialist environmental missteps will be addressed. Finally the question of why Rapa Nui is in the current era, in decline will be explored.
