Being a Malvern police officer looks like a good gig. That is one I have not managed yet. Never dated a cop. My parents raised me with a healthy distrust of police. I grew up calling them pigs, which made my grandparents apoplectic. As did my leading a protest march up and down their driveway. Both my parents were brutalized by police in the process of peaceful protests. Their friends were brutalized even more. I was abused at a babysitters’ house where I was left for days when my parents got arrested. I consider this trickle-down abuse from police. So I’ve yet to date a cop. My dad warned me against Israelis, military men, and government spies, too. He also told me my dating a Black man could get him killed. I’ve dated all but a cop. Because I seek to understand those who seek to hurt me. And I like to believe the world has changed enough from my dad’s days that I can date a Black man without endangering his life. But it depends on where I am. How much has changed since 1968 when my parents were being chased by cops on horseback? For using their voices to protest things since accepted as having been wrong? I will take this imbedded journalism gig almost as far as it can go, but dating a cop might be more than I can handle. So I married a cop’s grandson, instead. Yeah, I don’t need to date a cop. Been there, done that. People who police others are not my people. One can never speak gently or sweetly enough. Am I saying anything nice about this person? Is it useful or helpful? And above all, can I say it gently, humbly, and sweetly? You will be amazed at what loving and courteous speech can do for you. With a respectful and kind tone, a million barriers can be broken down. I agree that there are situations when we have to be firm or confrontational. And yet, we don’t have to be rude or dismissive. Gentle speech can turn even your sworn enemies into your allies. Have you ever believed the false promises made by many public figures ? Probably not. And yet we can’t deny the influence of pretense or the illusion of sincerity in their speech or they wouldn’t be in the positions they are in. How difficult is it to use thank you and please at every opportunity, or to express the good you see in someone, or to acknowledge the contribution of someone in your life? Not very. Why order when a request will do, why boss around when you can befriend them? Being genuinely kind in your speech will fill your life with a lot of beautiful people who will love you and care for you just as much. The job of the shell is to encapsulate the right amount of medicine and make the whole thing digestible, palatable. In other words, the hallmark of a spiritually evolved individual is that, seeped in truth, they possess both: a beautiful mind and gentle speech. For, truth is nothing but another dimension of love. Beauty, gentleness, compassion, calm and humility are mere refractions in the kaleidoscope of truth. Either you practice the virtues and you will unearth your truth or you find the truth and the virtues will come flocking to you. Either way, you progress. After all, what is true is what is beautiful and what’s both is invariably what is Divine. | С человеком надо разговаривать ночью. Наедине. С кофе или чаем. Без наигранности, масок, фальши. Начистоту. Фоном можно включить музыку. Знаете, часто это многое меняет. Я встречала разных людей. Больше всего удивляли бесконечно счастливые и оптимистичные. Идут к тебе по улице навстречу, улыбаются, обнимают, интересуются: "Как дела?". Сразу же уверяют, что у них всё "идеально и просто шикарно".. Но порой декорации меняются, и я вижу его с противоположного ракурса. В начале приведу сравнение. Это схоже с ситуацией, когда мы, девушки, целый день ходим на каблуках, с макияжем, в красивой одежде, а затем приходим домой, смываем косметику, завязываем волосы в небрежный хвост и меняем супер крутое платье на обожаемую любимую огромную футболку и шорты. Потому что в них комфортнее. Так и в поведении. Представьте: ночь, город спит, обычная тусовка друзей, я сижу на балконе с кружкой кофе, и на него выходит тот самый "весёлый человек", чтобы покурить.. Я смотрю на него и вижу грустные, всё понимающие глаза. Начинается разговор. Очень честный и настоящий. Обсуждаем проблемы, усталость, политику, предательство. Задаем друг другу вопросы, на которые не знаем и даже не хотим знать ответы. Вспоминаем прошлое, мечтаем о настоящем. Я узнаю о его слезах, страхах. О том, как он скучает по друзьям, как надоело одиночество, как ему больно. Миллион эмоций безумно тоскливой палитры. Трагикомедия. Потом сигарета заканчивается, кофе допивается. Светает. Утром всё опять возвращается на свои места.
