I’ve come to understand false confidence as a delicate mask, one that I’ve worn at times, crafted from the need to appear more assured and in control than I truly feel inside. It’s a facade, a defense mechanism, designed to protect from vulnerability, from the gaze of doubt and judgment, both from others and, most critically, from myself. This brand of confidence is born out of insecurity, a shaky foundation built on the fear of not measuring up, of being seen as less than. False confidence, I’ve realized, is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can propel me forward, granting a semblance of courage to take on challenges I might otherwise shy away from. Yet, on the other, it’s a brittle armor that can shatter under the weight of reality, leaving me to confront the very vulnerabilities I sought to hide. I’ve learned that false confidence often speaks in grandiose terms, overpromising and underdelivering, because it lacks the deep roots of genuine self-assurance. It’s like walking on a tightrope without a safety net, every step fueled by the hope that no one notices the fear in my eyes. But through introspection and experience, I’m learning to discern between this hollow confidence and the real, sturdy kind that comes from truly knowing and accepting oneself, with all our strengths and weaknesses. I strive now to build a confidence that doesn’t need to shout to be heard, one that can stand quietly and still command respect—a confidence that’s not a mask, but a reflection of my true self. Yesterday on my walk, I listened to @melrobbins podcast where she dives into false confidence (overconfidence effect) & boy did I experience a lightbulb moment when relating the discussion to my relationship with alcohol… When I drank, I never thought about the long term effects. The in the moment, “easy”/impulsive decision to drink ultimately made my life more difficult (& miserable) in the long run. Thanks to denial & false confidence, I convinced myself I was invincible until the impacts of alcohol were piled up so high, I couldn’t ignore them anymore. False Confidence (aka making excuses)!😳 After listening to Mel Robbins talk about the notion of false confidence I started to reflect on how this has played out in my own life. I know I stayed unhappy in the same job role for many years because my false confidence was telling me; ‘things will get better’, ‘the hours are good for my family flexibility’ …. Even though my health, energy and confidence was completely depleted, I made excuses because it felt safer to stay unhappy rather than work on cultivating real confidence by taking the leap to start my own business (which thankfully I eventually did). Whatever it is, when we make excuses for ourselves (because we may fear change), we deprive ourselves of the opportunity for growth, for reaping the rewards of accomplishment, and we don’t get to strengthen our resilience muscle - which gives us a sense of hope, wellbeing and happiness for the future!💫 All of these amazing qualities get lost when we convince ourselves that we don’t need to change anything because, ‘we’re doing ok’, or ‘we’re getting by’ ….😔 We are meant for so much more than this!✨✨✨ So where in your life are you operating with false confidence? 'Who am I?' - Results of a Me, Myself & I brief - The 'Who am I?' section of this brief shows how I tend to hide my emotions through style and makeup. When putting myself in the 'spotlight' of other people's gaze, I've never really wanted to be asked about my emotions out of fear of cracking. Therefore, I take a lot of care into either my makeup or my style each day so as to guide conversation to this. However, this has resulted in me being unable to speak to people about my true emotions, even when I've felt like opening up to them. Therefore, I presented myself as a triad of images, going from my posed confidence with makeup, then to my boldness with style, to a raw photo in comfortable clothes which shows my true side of being truly uncomfortable in my own skin. #studentphotographer #studio #falseconfidence #photoshoot #mentalhealth #anxiety

"Busyhead" was @noahkahanmusic's first studio album, published by @republicrecords in 2019. My youngest introduced me to the now @recordingacademy nominated Kahan a little over a year ago as "Stick Season" was building up to a sold out summer tour and massive sales. I learned early that Kahan's music spoke to more age brackets than just the Gen Z crowds, and I set out to acquire his discography.
