As humans, we are gifted with an incredible ability that sets us apart - THE POWER TO MAKE CHOICES. 🔑 While animals act on instinct, we have the remarkable capacity for FREE WILL . Too often we feel like victims, blaming our family, environment or others for holding us back. But those are just excuses to stay in our comfort zones and avoid taking responsibility. Remember the sound of the alarm going off at 6am. You're tired, the bed is cozy, and you don't have to be at work until 9. In this moment, you have a choice to make. Do you listen to that voice saying "Just 10 more minutes"? Or do you practice self-discipline, make the conscious choice to get up, and start your day in an intentional way? Ever been in a situation where you disagreed with what was being said, but you held your tongue? That's a choice - to stay quiet and go with the flow instead of asserting your perspective. Or how about when you've been overwhelmed and needed support, but you didn't ask for help? That's also a choice - to try to power through alone instead of being vulnerable. #bookreview ‘Determined’ by Robert Sapolsky I regard ‘Behave’ as an exceptional book, and I was hence keen to read ‘Determined’ (well, I actually listened to the audiobook). Sapolsky gets my attention right at the start when he says we have no free will! His challenge – point me to a neuron which fires on its own irrespective of what happened before. He admits that many think this is too high a bar since it is near impossible to isolate our brains from the real world. Yet, he goes on to convincingly argue that there is no way to accommodate free will in our actions. Our actions are a consequence of genes, upbringing, environment, culture, and experiences. The second half of the book has detailed discussion on the implications for law enforcement and our life is itself, if we accept the absence of free will. Sapolsky admits that he has not fully worked out all the implications to life. This is because much of our thinking is around intent & morality. It is disconcerting to think that we can neither blame someone who harms us, nor be thankful to someone who helps us. Yet, he goes on to say that modern societies can live, and live well with this discovery. While I am undecided on whether I accept all of Sapolsky’s views, this is an extremely thought-provoking book (much like how ‘Behave’ is). I strongly recommend you read/listen to it and form your own opinions. At the minimum, it reinforces how important it is to cultivate safe & progressive environments for people, especially children. It is too late to do it once the brain is set in its ways. I intend to also read “Free Agents” by Kevin Mitchell, which reaches a different conclusion. [2024.4.21 本町文化堂ツーリング⑥] ①屋根ありがたい②地震アラーム③激しく降ってる④ローマのパンの残り⑤幸福湯はまた次回⑥パッキング⑦下の人は早朝出発⑧ランドセル用レインカバー⑨10:50出発⑩万得に寄ってから 4月21日(日) 6時すぎに激しい衝撃で目が覚める。揺れではなく1発のドーン!!という大きな衝撃。すぐに2018年6月の大阪北部地震のことが頭に浮かんで、あの時もこんな地震だったと思いながらカブでどう逃げるかを考えていたら二度寝。しばらくして同じベッドの下の人が出掛ける音がうっすら聴こえて、9時頃に起きてシェアキッチンで昨日の残りのパンを食べながら今日の予定を考える。11時にチェックアウトしてそのまま開店したばかりの幸福湯に行こうと思っていたけど、ちょうどその時間が雨脚が弱まるみたいで走り始めたい。また濡れるから幸福湯は次の機会に。この時に奇襲の狂犬ことマツゲンが車で宿の前を通っていたと後で知る。部屋に戻ってパッキングと雨天用の服装に着替える。スニーカーの上にビニール袋を被せてからシューズカバーを装着したら良い感じだった。雨天走行といっても100kmだけだから気が楽。バックパックのレインカバーは20年ぐらい前に購入したmont-bell製でさすがにくたびれてきたから帰宅後に破棄した。次の旅もきっと雨だから新調しないと。 シーツをEV前のカゴに入れたらチェックアウト完了。部屋の鍵とかも無いのでこれだけ。駐輪場でサイドバッグにもレインカバーを装着。ネットで購入したランドセル用のレインカバーがぴったりだった。10時50分に出発。まずは昨日の打ち上げで行った万得の前で写真を撮り、1つだけに絞った目的地へ。 #guesthouserico #ゲストハウス #和歌山県 #和歌山市 #和歌山 #wakayama #スーパーカブ #supercub #freewill #ツーリング #カブツーリング

SCALES OF HAPPINESS | ' TỰ DO ' Hello mọi người, lâu lâu chúng ta quay lại với series này nào hihi 🙌 Nhiều khi mình suy nghĩ về ý niệm tự do, mà do dạo gần đây mình cũng được tiếp xúc với khái niệm nhiều hơn chút ít. Thật sự con người có tự do hay không? Đó là một câu hỏi mà mình dạo đây suy nghĩ đến. Về mặt vật lý, rõ ràng chúng ta không tự do vì chúng ta đang sống trong một thế giới được cấu tạo bởi vô số quy luật chồng chéo lên nhau. Chúng ta không thể nào thở dưới nước vì đó là môi trường không đủ oxy, cũng không thể nào chống lại trọng lực Trái đất để tùy ý bay lên. Có lẽ vì thế mà chúng ta cũng dùng hình ảnh loài chim để nói về tự do, vì chúng là loài tiêu biểu chống lại được sự ràng buộc của trọng lực. Và dù có giả như chúng ta cùng nhau tiến vào không gian, dù đã có thể tự do khỏi những quy luật của Trái Đất thì chúng ta cũng phải đối mặt với vô vàn những quy luật của vũ trụ mà ta còn chưa hiểu biết hết. Thế nên, với mình, về mặt vật lý, chúng ta không có tự do đích thực. Vậy thì hạnh phúc của chúng ta có gắn liền với tự do hay không? Trong tiềm thức mỗi người, ai cũng muốn có tự do cả. Nói cách khác, được tự do là mong ước nguyên sơ, là quyền cơ bản của con người. Thế nên, được tự do mặc nhiên người ta sẽ có hạnh phúc. Nhưng, cũng giống như những chú chim muốn bay được, ngoài bản chất sinh học được thiết kế từ trước, chúng cũng cần có sự vận động để có thể bay cao được. Theo một cách nào đó, sự tự do cũng đi kèm với một cái giá tương xứng với nó. Với con người, ta còn có thêm một điểm, nếu loài chim bắt buộc phải bay vì đó là bản thiết kế vốn có của nó nhằm phục vụ nhu cầu của sự tồn tại và bản năng vốn có của chúng, thì chúng ta trên một cấp bậc cao hơn, lại có ‘ý chí tự do’. Nghĩa là đứng trước một thực tại diễn ra, ta có thể suy tư và tự do quyết định hành vi của mình để tương tác với thực tại đó không phải vì phục vụ nhu cầu của sự tồn tại nữa, mà là khám phá cái mới, là quyết định và thực hiện dựa trên sự tự do của mình.
