We are delighted to present 'Turning Worlds', the brand new micro exhibition in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios. It features, from left to right - Ladoza – ‘Outside and On’ – linseed printing oils on paper - @ladoza.uk Dhama Thanigasapapathy – ‘Submerged in Scale II’ – oil on board - @dhama100 Ranaa Farooq – ‘Inner Ocean’ – acrylic on canvas - @ranaa.farooq.art Norman Anderson – ‘In The Moment’ – acrylic and pigment on canvas - @normanart4g Being there, present with the work, in the mindful moment. The artist and the work supporting each other.  The spectator and the work supporting each other. A suite of paintings that gently ponder the great questions of our existence.  A space to be and think. There is an openness  - almost nothing, yet simultaneously everything - inviting us to contemplate our position, where we stand amongst the challenges and joy, the mystery and the near certainty.  They ask us to feel, to look outside and inside, and to imagine.  Let materials paraphrase the unpredictable elements. Donuts. Curation day 1 @fronteergallery. I been very thrilled to be invited by @swseanwilliams to co-curate this exhibition of 22 paintings. Today, we played around with a number of different options. It amazes me to see how a lot of the time it almost curates itself. Unpack, place, stand back, and without knowing the paintings have found each other. Final decisions tomorrow and then the show opens Tuesday. Come along and tell us what you think. #donuts #prosaic97 #seanwilliams #artistcurators #groupexhibitions #painters #contemporarypaintingexhibition #contemporarybritishpainting #sheffieldartscene #curator

That thing where you naturally put colours together. 1. These beauties met me when I came into the studio this morning. This is a small corner of a new painting called Open to Possibilities. 2. Talking about my work on Tuesday. Thank you to @lindabraham_art for this photo. I have had some lovely comments about how the colours I used in my paintings in my exhibition, Delving Deeply give people joy and hope. Thinking about environmental issues can be dismal but it is not my way. I believe in humans and the resilience of nature. 'Unintentional' (acrylic on styrene). Measuring only 8 x 6cms this painting is currently on display in 'Miniatures Revisited' at the Cupola Gallery @cupolacontemporaryart in Sheffield. It forms part of 'Take The Long Way Home', a collaboration with David Riley @davidrileymodelmaking in which I have contributed four small paintings to sit alongside David's fantastic models.  My intention with this painting was to consider the intention of my painting, and how important, or otherwise, it might be to hold on to that intention as the painting progresses. Is it more interesting to embrace accidents and subsequent slippages? It is probably a comment on my own ludicrously strict painting style and the cold, joyless brushwork.  #paintingsurface #paintingintentions #intention #unintentional #accidental #embracingtheaccidental #happyaccidents #prosaic97 #smallpaintings #smallpainting #tinypainting #miniatures #miniaturepainting #contemporarybritishpainting #cbp #paintbritain #contemporarypainting #spiltpaint #cupolagallery #miniatureart #pointillism #newimpressionism #newpointillism

'Trelawn Street, Headingley, Leeds' (oil on canvas) by the brilliant Jonathan Hooper is our Painting of the Week. It will feature in Fronteer Gallery's 'Colour' exhibition which opens on March 26. 'I have long admired Jonathan's work. For too long I only saw it on-line but have more recently had the opportunity to see it in real life, whereupon it takes on another dimension. The surface is rich, with areas of fluid paint, and other areas where the paint is applied thickly. The mundanity of the subject appeals to me, yet Hooper's colouring makes it dream-like, or a memory of a Polaroid. I think they are about Painting and the task of picture-msking, how it is different to Photography because it has the capacity to do something else.' 'Miranda' (oil on canvas) by David Jones @davidjonesart80 is our Painting of the Week. It is currently on display in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios as part of 'Three Portraits', the first time we have hosted a solo exhibition. David says, "This portrait is from life and is therefore a fairly neutral pose, painted observationally without a push towards drama." This piece is proof that if something is painted well it can be a profound statement. Art does not have to be spectacular to be meaningful. Such restraint and tenderness can be deeply moving. #portraitpainting #portrait #portraiture #paintingoftheweek #prosaic97 #projectspace #projectsgallery #sheffieldgallery #microexhibition #microshow #sheffieldexhibition #renaissanceart #renaissancepainting #oilpaintingoncanvas #supportartists #soloexhibition #soloshow #contemporarypainting #observationalpainting #paintingfromlife

We are delighted to present 'Three Portraits' by David Jones. It is our forty-seventh micro-exhibition and the first ever solo show. It is such a privilege to host David's beautiful work. They are portraits but have very different atmospheres. If you enjoy looking at high quality painting, where the paint is applied so thoughtfully, then this is the show for you. David says, “I am influenced by the history and aesthetics of the Renaissance through to Baroque period of Western art.  I explore themes of otherworldliness, religion and mythology, with a nod to sci-fi tropes in literature and film. I sometimes draw on High Renaissance and Baroque lighting effects, setting up mise-en-scènes and photographing them as reference, often including clothing and textures that I feel might be interesting to paint. The portrait of ‘Miranda’ is from life and is therefore a fairly neutral pose, painted observationally without a push towards drama. The self-portrait ‘Wardrobe Recluse’ has taken a tenebris lighting treatment, using a chink of light cutting across my face, in keeping with the furtiveness of the theme.  The portrait of ‘David Watching’ is from a series of paintings I did of him where we decided on a detective/spy theme with him lurking in the shadows or hovering around windows." A Moment in Time' (acrylic on canvas) by Ranaa Farooq @ranaa.farooq.art is our Painting of the Week. It will form part of her solo exhibition at Sheffield's Artscene, for which there is an opening event on Monday 4th from 5 to 8pm.  Ranaa says, 'I am a self-taught abstract painter born in Birmingham and now living in Sheffield. I create paintings which are rooted in self-development and spirituality. Originally trained as a doctor, after many years of service within the NHS, my latent passion for art found its awakening during a pivotal moment of introspection amidst the Covid pandemic.  The realisation that my true voice had been stifled by societal conditioning and expectations fuelled a transformative journey of self-discovery and mindfulness. This led me to the realm of abstract painting, a medium through which I seek to convey the intricate interplay between the conscious and subconscious mind. My works are an exploration of colour, texture, and intuition, culminating in vibrant and meditative pieces, which I hope elicit emotion and contemplation in the observer. In each brushstroke, I aim to encapsulate a moment of connection with something deeper and more spiritual—a visual dance between the conscious and subconscious mind. My paintings are usually acrylic on canvas with texture applied.  I'm still on my journey of self-development and so, in the process of training to become a life coach. My aspiration is to guide others in recognising the profound significance of self-awareness—particularly the influence held by our thoughts. My mission is to empower individuals to tap into the inherent, transformative healing capabilities we all possess. My art has been a source of personal healing, serving as a canvas for the lessons I've learned along my journey. Sharing these expressions with the world brings me immense joy, as I hope to contribute to a collective understanding of the beauty and potential that lies within each of us.' #mindfulness #amomentintime #sheffieldartscene #artscene #artscenesheffield #prosaic97 #sheffieldexhibition #sheffieldgallery #abstractpainting #abstraction #paintingintuitively #intuitivepainting #selfdiscovery #acrylicpainting

'I'm a Cage in Search of a Bird’ by Lucy Farrington @toffeescratch is our Painting of the Week. It is currently on display in 'From 'A Charm of Goldfinches'' in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios. There is still a week to view the micro show if you have the opportunity.  This is an intriguing work, with a wonderful title. It has a slightly weathered feel, seemingly echoing the age of the original, and is a terrific point of difference within this show.  This micro-exhibition features four works from ‘A Charm of Goldfinches’, an exhibition curated by Bryan Eccleshall @bryaneccleshall that was first staged at Gage Gallery in Sheffield before moving to the Gateway Gallery in Shrewsbury. Of the original show, Bryan says. “There are more paintings in this small show than surviving by the man generally acknowledged to be Rembrandt’s best pupil, Carel Fabritius. Two are in the National Gallery (one a brilliant self-portrait and the other a strange street scene of Delft, his home town). Fabritius died in a huge explosion that devastated part of Delft in 1654. His most famous painting—painted the year he died—is The Goldfinch (Het puttertje), which hangs in the Mauritshuis in the room next to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. This charming work provides the starting point for this show. When I floated the idea of this exhibition, we were coming out of lockdowns during which many people took comfort and delight in the birds that visited their gardens. Wild creatures seemed to be bolder and perhaps even a link to normality. In the original painting the bird is tethered by a delicate chain and many of the submissions engage with ideas of freedom and captivity. Given the genesis of the project, that is perhaps appropriate.” #acharmofgoldfinches #prosaic97 #newpaintingoninstagram #sheffieldexhibition #microexhibition #goldfinches #paintingsurface #paintingsofbirds #microshow #thegoldfinch #carelfabritius1654 #afterfabritius #projectspace #projectsgallery #sheffieldgallery #supportartists #supportingartists #artecontemporáneo #artcontemporain #diyartexhibition #smallgallery   #birdcage #birdinacage #birdinart

Given the genesis of the project, that is perhaps appropriate.” From left to right -  Lucy Farrington – ‘I’m a Cage in Search of a Bird’ @toffeescratch Jéréme Crow – ‘The Goldfinch after Carel Fabritius’ @jeremecrow Georgia Peskett – ‘Fabritius’ Goldfinch after Richter’ @georgiapeskett Paul Evans – ‘Drawing water, this Thistle-beaked Cardulis conveys Autumn auguries’ @paul.k.evans.7 #contemporaryartexhibition #contemporaryart #prosaic97 #contemporarypainting #acharmofgoldfinches #projectspace #projectsgallery #sheffieldgallery #sheffieldexhibition #microexhibition #microshow #supportingartists #goldfinches #carelfabritius #artisticresponse #creativeresponse #thegoldfinch #contemporarypaintingexhibition #blocstudios

'Tread' (watercolour) by Anne MacLeod is our first Painting of the Week of 2024 and it is the first time we have shared her work. Anne says, 'In my practice, I immerse myself in my environment and explore the diverse textures and materials I encounter, using drawing and painting, frottage, photography and sound recording. Painting in watercolour in a photorealistic style allows me to showcase unnoticed objects and convey the wonderment I feel when I encounter them. Identical fire hydrant covers become different and unique in time because of location, footfall and weathering. By immersing myself in the minutiae in urban spaces, and recording what I see and my response to it, and sharing this with others, these spaces are no longer over-looked and invisible, but instead become seen, noticed and appreciated by others'. Follow Anne @macleod.anne to enjoy more of her beautiful artwork. Please feel free to contact Prosaic if you would like us to feature your painting on our Instagram, particularly if it is part of an exhibition that might benefit from a bit of extra publicity.  #happynewyear2024 #prosaic97 #watercolourpainting #watercolourwork #unnoticed #firehydrantcover #watercolorpainting #realism #realisticpainting #photorealism #photorealistic #urbanscene #urbanspaces #urbanenvironment #newpaintingoninstagram #supportingartists #respondingtotheenvironment #artecontemporáneo #artcontemporain #contemporarypainting

Look out for a third version in the new year!  The exhibition features postcard sized works on the theme of sightseeing, encompassing ideas of escape, travel, journeys, places and views outside and inside us. Are we spectators or voyeurs of our lives or others? At a time in which we are confronted with daily images of other people’s anguish and suffering, ‘Sightseeing Tour’ is a respectful enquiry of ways of looking, a reminder that there are other ways of thinking, and that art can be used to connect us in ways that do not alienate us further.  Bryan says, “Miss Clara (c. 1738 – 14 April 1758) was brought to Europe in 1741 and became something of a celebrity as she toured Europe until her death 17 years later. She was only the fifth rhinoceros to be taken to Europe and was drawn and painted by many artists. I am an artist and educator, based in Sheffield, where I studied and have a studio at Bloc. I work across all sorts of media but am increasingly concerned with picture-making as a response to being overwhelmed with images. I am also concerned about AI, which I do not use in my practice, believing that the sensual act of making and the absurdity of placing things together in an intuitive manner is important and utterly human.” Follow Bryan @bryaneccleshall #contemporaryart #sheffieldgallery #microexhibition #prosaic97 #rhinoceros #rhino #mixedmediaart #postcardart #postcardsizepainting #artecontemporáneo #sheffieldexhibition #microshow #supporteachother❤️ #supportingartists #paintingofarhino #platformproject #platformhms #sightseeingtour #contemporaryartexhibition #missclara #newpaintingoninstagram #paintingoftheweek #

From September 2021, 'Shimmering Substance' was the eighteenth micro exhibition I curated, and it was held at the wonderful Fronteer Gallery @fronteer_art in their stairwell space. It was the second iteration, with the welcome addition of Allen Williams, the first having been in the Prosaic Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios. It was a collection of four paintings for which the surface is more than merely the substrate - it is the catalyst for the work, a thing to be addressed and negotiated. It can be re-defined and re-emphasized; occasionally deceptive, fleetingly tricking us into thinking it might be something else; or become a floating, fluid surface of immense lyricism and great seduction. Close inspection reveals the layers and thus the dialogue the artist has had with the work. From left to right – Graham Lister – ‘Brightness Behind’ – oil on board @lister_art Allen Williams – ‘Untitled’ - oil pastel and acrylic on paper on cardboard Cheryl Huntbach – ‘Threads’ – oil and acrylic on board @cherylhuntbach Gary Simmonds – ‘Fluid Surface’ – acrylic on canvas @g.l.simmonds #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #abstractart #abstractpainting #abstraction #paintingsurface #paintingsubstrates #fronteergallery #prosaic97 #diygallery #microexhibition #microshow #sheffieldexhibition #sheffieldgallery #surfaceofpainting #nonobjectivepainting #artecontemporanea #artcontemporain #diycurating #diycurator #paintpaintpaint #supportingartists #workingwithartists #workwithartists

Marks taken from rocks become a portal through which we see the layers of time. The resulting aerial, contour & language marks that emerge give sight to the experience of walking in that space. A Fine Art Masters Graduate of 2015 I navigate my practice through walking. Using drawing with line and language marks my work responds to our relationship and use of landscape. I have had both a solo exhibition at Surface Gallery and was awarded the Winsor Newton Product Prize, in 2023." This extraordinary piece is currently on display in 'Sightseeing Tour' in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios. This is the second iteration of this project, the first being part of @platformhms plot in Platform Projects in Technopolis in Athens.   Nic says, "Frottage taken from a visit to Cornwall is the starting point of this work. I have had both a solo exhibition at Surface Gallery and was awarded the Winsor Newton Product Prize, in 2023." I think it captures something of the weather, which is also part of the atmosphere, in some way.  I was born in the south of England in 1958, and I am based at Exchange Place Studios in Sheffield. This year my  has been in the Ferens Gallery Open and group shows at the Cupola Gallery in Sheffield. My work is mainly oil on canvas and accompanying sketchbook work in watercolour pen and pencil is important to me as well. I love painting for its abstract formal properties of form and colour, and also that things may be seen, known by us, and mysterious and unseen." My drawings reveal a transitional ambiguous identity travelling through space – an unresolved tension within the landscape that evokes the fleeting mix of memory and perception. I am a contemporary landscape painter living in the Northwest of England. Rooted in the painting language of Romanticism, I respond to transient and incidental moments of light and atmosphere. Ideas of liminality underpin my work which stands on the threshold between nostalgic association and something unknown.  Recent exhibitions include the Pastel society annual open exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London 2023 where I was awarded the Yoshimoto prize, and the drawing paper show publication and exhibition in Liverpool." Posted @withregram • @prosaic97 'Moorland Plantation’ (acrylic & mixed media) by Patricia Lane.  This beautiful painting is currently part of 'Sightseeing Tour' in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios in Sheffield. This is the second iteration of this project, the first being part of @platformhms plot in Platform Projects in Technopolis in Athens. Patricia says, "This is an imagined landscape inspired by the Longshaw Plantation in the Peak District.  My inspiration comes from the landscape.  Paintings are not necessarily exact representations of a particular view but, more about the essence of the landscapes that I see. Most important to me are the memories evoked by a particular location; the light, atmosphere, colours and textures, weather conditions." This terrific piece is currently part of 'Sightseeing Tour' in our Projects Gallery within Bloc Studios in Sheffield. This is the second iteration of this project, the first being part of @platformhms plot in Platform Projects in Technopolis in Athens.   Myfanwy explains her ideas behind the work - "Sightseers across Europe have been horrified to see the flames of forest fires rising near popular tourist attractions, leaving trails of death and destruction. Global warming is accelerating such extreme weather events. The responsibility for looking after the planet lies with everyone. The interaction between the physical landscape and mankind is explored in my work. As my paintings develop intuitively, so representation gives way to abstraction. As an abstract artist, I have exhibited both nationally and internationally since 2013. I have shown work at several London galleries, including the Mall Galleries, and the London Affordable Art Fairs. I have shown extensively in solo and group formats in galleries in England. More widely, I have exhibited several times in Athens, Paris, Prague and Barcelona. I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a B.A. Honours in Fine Art and my studio is at Exchange Place in Sheffield." It is currently part of 'Sightseeing Tour' in our Projects Gallery. This is the second iteration of this project, the first being part of @platformhms plot in Platform Projects in Technopolis in Athens Tamara says, "This is inspired by the owl that appeared on ancient Athenian coins, and the Greek amphora and artefacts that were exhibited recently at the British Museum. I have placed them in an imaginary landscape inspired by the Sculpture Court in the Barbican Estate whose architecture often reminds me of the open air Ancient Greek theatres. I try to capture the ephemeral, yet constant textures, forms, and colours of my real and imaginary landscapes. Born in South Africa, I have spent all of my adult life in London apart from my university days in Oxford. I work from a studio in the City of London as a painter and writer. I have exhibited twice at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions as well as winning prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society opens.
