It was quite surprising to see a blanket of fog this morning, but that only meant one thing... misty tree photos! It felt quite eerie up here on Ramsley Moor, and I soon started to become conscious of the possibility of getting lost in these conditions. I had places to be, and I did not want to be calling people explaining that I was going to be late because I was lost on a moor! Under normal circumstances, I would have easily found my bearings in this area, but in this scenario, with no visible landmarks in the distance, I had a feeling that one wrong turn and I could have spent quite a while finding my way back! Do you know your bog plants? Or rather your moorland plants? Bogs that are in good condition are incredibly rich habitats. In the valley mires and blanket bogs of our uplands we can find many incredible plants if we look hard enough (and don’t mind getting a bit wet)! Plants with fabulous names like bog bean, bog asphodel, bog pimpernel, and then there’s all the mosses and the grasses and rushes and on and on 🤩 Sadly our bogs aren’t in great condition. For example less than 1% of Dartmoor’s blanket bogs are functionally intact meaning less carbon storage, less biodiversity in plants and insects and birds and mammals. SOLD! “Dartmoor Bracken in Summer”, a copper gilded original has sold from @parklifeheavitree. I used prints of real Bracken from Dartmoor as well as illustrated some of the leaves ‘unfurling’ in that slightly magical way that they do. Whatever stage the bracken is at, I find it beautiful and so reminiscent of the wild moor. The Whinchat returns. Last week, we had the return of the first Whinchats to Islay. These small, striking birds are without a doubt my favourite summering songbird species. The males have a beautiful contrasting plumage, made up of oranges, creams, browns, and blacks. Often seen perched high on fences and scrub around the reserve, singing their scratchy song. Since returning I’ve only seen males here on the reserve, which to be fair seems standard. They often seem to get back before the females, establishing their territories - ready to breed. Last night I needed to escape the world for a bit so went to Emsworthy Mire on Dartmoor. It rained and the sun shone. The complete silence was interrupted only by bird song and the call of a cuckoo.
