Book Reflection: The Teacher Author: Freida McFadden This was my first taste from this author and it had me thinking what have I been doing with my life without reading each and every book written by Freida McFadden? The Teacher was an absolute page-turner, filled with countless plot twists, some predictable and many were unexpected. I absolutely, throughly enjoyed reading it. I was captivated by its gorgeous opening lines and I haven't been let go until its very last page. The story was fast paced, which after reading several of the author's books, I noticed is her most treasured weapon. It was addictive, terrifying and really entertaining. The twist in this book is the kind that will have you talking to yourself at two in the morning. But it holds a sensitive topic and scenes that might make some readers uncomfortable. I loved the gripping effect the story has on me. The writing style that's new to the ones I'm used to. I love the easy to read short chapters that kept me swiping for more. Most of all, I love the amazing character development that unlocked the true colors of each and every psychopath in this delicious psychological thriller. The ending was surprisingly unexpected and it blew my mind in a way that I wanted to go back and reread the story in order to get everything right. Highly recommended to anyone in search of a thrilling and unforgettable story. Rating: âïžâïžâïžâïž
Biltmore Castle is a wonder. Iâve visited the estate several times over the last forty years. Each time I visit I learn new things. Iâve read several books about the people of the estate and whose hard work and dedication made Biltmore thrive. I loved all the weaving stuff. Iâm not a weaver but thread and thread and tapestry work have always interested me. There are 3 stories intertwined: Arthur, Lorna, and Gentry. I loved Arthur. He was so patient and accommodating and my heart broke for him over and over until he finally got his heartâs content. I barely tolerated Lorna for most of the book. She finally Improves by the end but I seriously considered tossing her into a loom. Gentry was a hurricane ready to erupt. She finds her way and her story is compelling. Set against the shadow of Biltmore, this story tells of everyday people whose craft and art were finally acknowledged and rewarded. ð REVIEW ð Big thanks to @canongatebooks who last week sent me not one, but two books by @salena.godden â a new collection of poetry and her autobiography. I fell in love with Salenaâs writing with #MrsDeathMissesDeath and promptly sought out poetry collection, #fishingintheaftermath â Iâve never looked back. Both are out this week but so far Iâve only managed to finish âwith love, grief and furyâ â and itâs fabulous. With 80 poems to choose from you will be spoilt for choice for a favourite but I have a few that were stand outs for me. Sorry, but yours will undoubtedly differ. Sorry â how many times do you say that word in a day. As many as one hundred times in the space of three hours? Think about it. I just said it in the last paragraph and Iâm not sure what Iâm apologising for. Do you? The Then and The Now â is there any better time machine than music. A song that as soon as you hear it youâre transported back to the then of the song. Itâs amazing that music can do that, no? This poem delves into music as the ultimate time traveller. Five Words â I donât think Iâll ever read a poem that is so thoroughly gut-punching using just five words per line than this. Dedicated to the memory of Sarah Everard, Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman. As someone who had six degrees of separation to one of those souls, itâs a heartbreaking few pages. On top of those youâll experience others that tackle social injustice, mental health, the pandemic, nature, global warming and of course â love, grief and fury. And I know you should never judge a book by its cover but this IS simply gorgeous. And the typography by @palimpsestbp is top notch too. Keen to get started on autobigrpahy âSpringfield Roadâ which, according to the notes, evokes an era when oranges seemed bigger and summers were longer, a world of half-penny sweets, and free school milk (until Thatcher the snatcher swooped in). Itâs totally my era, so Iâm looking forward to getting thrown back in time. If youâve not read any of Salenaâs work before please consider picking these up â and prepare to be moved. âwith love, grief and furyâ and âSpringfield Roadâ are both released this Thursday.
This is a book about our connection to animals unlike any I've read before, because it's written by a palaeoanthropologist. We are taken on a journey throughout human history, from the beginnings of our evolution, charting our relationships with animals and why this is one of our greatest strengths. Three significant milestones show the adaptive and cultural advantages of coexisting with other species. The first is the making of stone tools, which enabled us to transform from bipedal, plant-eating apes into meat-eating predators. This was possible because we paid more attention to other animals. Unlike any other species, we devoted substantial time and energy to knowing where other animals were, to learning what they were doing and what they were likely to do in the future. Early hominids were subjected to strong selection pressure to improve their observational skills and their memories of what they observed. This knowledge gave a hunting advantage and triggered our expansion into new areas. The second is the origin of language and symbolism. The knowledge that we gained was precious, thus the sharing of it gave another adaptive advantage. Having this information became more and more crucial to survival and evolutionary success. Paying close attention to animals and collecting and sharing this information enabled us to transition from being a strictly prey species to being both a prey species and a predator - language helped us to this faster, better and more reliably. The third is the domestication of animals. These are essentially living tools that perform work. The domestication of animals came long before the domestication of plants, driven by our increasingly intimate relationship with animals. The benefits are obvious - they helped with transportation, sustainable materials like wool, manure, they are movable wealth, provide nutritious food like milk, offer protection, assist in hunting, and allowed us to live in previously inaccessible habitats. Despite some excessive detail of tool-making and language that took the reader away from the main animal connection theme, this was a fascinating read.
ABOUT ME, PART 2: READING HABITS -I read quite a bit, but I donât post about every book I read. Usually I donât post about a book because I donât have much to say about it other than that I liked it. Sometimes I decline to post about a book because I thought it was terrible, but not usually. Then there are the books I read about which I have a lot to say but that for whatever reason I donât think my followers on here would much care about. (I am on both Goodreads and StoryGraph if you are curious about *all* my reading.) -You may have noticed that while I sometimes post photos of my book hauls, I generally donât post about my TBR or even what I plan to read this week/month/etc. My full take on the concept of a TBR is actually too elaborate for an IG caption, but the non-nuanced TL;DR version is: TBR lists are pointless and I donât keep one. As for what I intend to read: I suffer from a tendency to congratulate myself for all the things I intended to do but never did. I certainly donât need social media to reinforce that tendency. So I try to keep my book posts limited to books I actually finish. -On that subject, I am a stubborn book-finisher. My position on this is not ideological or prescriptive: I believe you should put down any book that you decide is not worth a second more of your precious, brief life. I, however, finish virtually every book I start because I have a tendency to want to abandon *any* book halfway through, no matter how good it is. Having learned this about myself, I now have to be disciplined in order to finish any book I read. Seriously, itâs the rare book I donât feel the urge to quit halfway through. I feel the urge sneaking up on me and I have to tell myself âno, this is just your impatience lying to you. Swipe for synopsis â¡ïž MY THOUGHTS: While fantasy isnât a genre I read often, I did enjoy this story. The book started off a bit of a slow burn while we get to know the characters and the world building, and I did struggle to get into it at first. But it picked up once the main character Bria leaves the rebel camp in search for her sister. At that point, I found the book hard to put down. Maddox did a nice job of fleshing out the characters, and I loved that we got both Bria and Evanderâs perspectives. This helped with the romantasy aspect as we got to understand the feelings these two had for each other while knowing what fate had in store for them. I was rooting for these two from page one, and I liked seeing their relationship progress. I liked the use of magic in this story, and that our heroine was kind of dark! Her magic was frightening, and even knowing what she could do, Ev still loved her. This is what makes a good romance in my opinion, and Maddox nailed it! This book ends on a cliffhanger so be forewarned you are going into a series if you read this one. Iâm excited to see where book two, A Journey Through Dark & Ember will take us, and canât wait to see what happens with Ev, Bria, and her sister, Nimai. What's the last book that made you smile? . âïžâïžâïžâïž.ð« This is the middle book in The Buried and the Bound trilogy, a YA fantasy series about Aziza, a hedge witch who protects her town from the supernatural and its border with Elphame. I'm not going to spoil the first book, so the brief synopsis I can give of this one is that Aziza and her friends have to go into Elphame in this book and try not to get tricked by the faeries. The last book left open two possible plots to be explored in this book, and while it went with the one I wasn't expecting, I'm sure the other plot line will be explored in the final book. This series is the perfect combination of cozy/sweet and some darker moments, with found family, adorable little supernatural creatures, and more. I highly appreciated little details in this book like Aziza not having recovered from an injury she got in the first book (a rarity in fantasy where everything is magically healed), and instances of sign language. I also loved the little remarks that show the author loves libraries and public transportation. I'm excited for the finale where hopefully the angsty romantic subplot will be resolved and Aziza will fully grow into her role as a hedge witch with mentorship. Kristy really did a fantastic job, you can actually just picture being there and imagining exactly what it looks like. Loved that. I also loved that you go back and forth between past and present. The love story and history of the family was so sweet to read about. I enjoyed how the whole mystery played out and how it ended. Ada turns out to be different than the curmudgeon Marilyn expected. Adaâs quick one liners and lipstick makes Marilyn think the two strong willed women may have more in common than she originally thought. Set at the Jersey Shore in the 1960s, Donât Forget to Write is definitely going to be in my top 5 favorite books this year! This book is perfect when you need a palate cleanser, but it is so much more than a light and fluffy read. These characters have been living in my mind since I finished reading this about a month ago. The interactions between Marilyn and Ada had me laughing out loud and I actually had to stop reading at the end because I was fully crying on the plane. De toverleerling, de vloek van de heksenmeester Spannend boekje voor kinderen vanaf 8 jaar. Hoewel het eerste gedeelte wel wat lastig inkomen was voor de meiden, inclusief mijzelf. Er waren vele dingen nog onduidelijk wie is wie, hoe komt Finn daar etc, Wellicht was een proloog beter geweest of alles wordt duidelijk in deel 2. Het verhaal gaat over Finn de leerling en die heeft strafwerk. Tot zijn grote meester terug, want hij heeft eindelijk een geweldig idee om het toverbos te verwoesten. Samen maken ze een grol, die het hele bos kan verwoesten, maar dat loopt niet helemaal volgens plan. Finn eindigt alleen in het toverbos en ontmoet daar elfen. Maar hij is bang voor elfen, want elven zijn gemeen. Dat is hem geleerd, maar klopt dat wel? Samen met de elfen probeert Finn de grol tegen te houden. Gaat ze het lukken het toverbos te redden? We hebben nog geen idee, want dat zullen we gaan lezen in deel 2. Het einde was dus ook wel een beetje een tegenvaller voor de meiden. Ze hadden natuurlijk willen weten of het ze zou lukken ze tegen te houden. De tekeningen in het boek zijn wel onwijs mooi. Het einde is alleen een beetje een domper voor de meiden, dus mama moet deel 2 gaan shoppen. Ook de allerlaatste bladzijden over de auteurs is een beetje apart, had er nog een pagina tussen gedaan zo lijkt het net of het bij het verhaal hoort. Al met al wel een spannend boekje, makkelijk te lezen voor kinderen vanaf 8 jaar, maar ik raad je zeker aan beide delen meteen te kopen. Data Baby by Sussanah Breslin, 3âïž This was an interesting read. Itâs marketed as a non fiction but itâs more of a memoir and I think that was a little evident in the writing itself. It was very interesting following her life story and how everything affected her.

After loving several books of essays last year, including Late Migrations and Iâll Show Myself Out, I was so excited to receive a #gifted copy of Bite by Bite from @eccobooks ⣠Written by a poet, itâs a celebration of food and family in bite sized pieces. Most of the essays are only three pages long, with beautiful illustrations of the fruits and other foods in between. ⣠⣠I loved the first essay, celebrating her curly, messy hair. The ways sheâs connected to her family in the Philippines and India through certain foods, and the memories that these foods bring back. She plays around with style, including poems in some essays or an alphabetical list of attributes. I also know the perfect way to make rice now, and to blow a pinch of cinnamon for prosperity.⣠⣠But Iâm putting the book aside. I was hoping for more personal stories, less history of the food. While the short chapters make it easy to pick up and put down, it doesnât allow time to let her stories develop either. ⣠⣠âââWhatâs a food youâll always associate with your childhood?⣠⣠For me, itâs cinnamon rolls. We always had them on Christmas, and after my parents divorced, I had them on Christmas and Christmas Eve. ðARC Book Review: You Know What You Did by K.T. Nguyen âïžâïžâïžâïž Claustrophobic, riveting and intense, K.T. Nguyen had me in the palm of her hand with You Know What You Did. From the well-written unreliable narrator to the thought-provoking theme, I was left reeling as Annie devolved into paranoia. After all, it extensively delved into the suffocating impact OCD had on Annie. At the same time, however, this led to a very long, slow burn for the first half of the book. Once I got to the last one hundred pages, though, I had to hold on for dear life as the foreboding thickened and my suspicions grew. As for the characters, I felt that many of them were, for the most part, morally gray. For that reason, they came across as more authentic since no one is entirely good or evil. Told via multiple timelines that crossed decades as well as hundreds of miles, it managed to craft a thorough backstory that had me connecting with Annie in a very real way. Sadly, though, this wasnât true for any other individuals in this book, who all felt relatively superficial despite its in-depth look at mental health and the immigrant experience. Despite that, however, I was totally won over by the climax and conclusion. Fast-paced, thoroughly disturbing and complete with a hairpin twist, it took all of my assumptions and threw them aside. Perhaps more mystery or suspenseful drama than thriller, I still got wrapped up in this nail-biting plot right from the start. I mean, how can you not love an unreliable narrator that suspects that her mother isnât really dead? That alone made me side-eye every interaction and character. All in all, despite its slow start, this taut, emotional tale hit just the right chord by the end. Rating of 4 stars. Thank you to @ktnguyen_author and #partner @duttonbooks for my #gifted copy.
