4.7 - Happy 43rd Bday to Rick James’ 1981 LP (Gordy), “Street Songs”! Rick James became a star in 1978 & 1979 with his first two albums, “Come Get It!” And “Bustin’ Out Of L Seven”. He was 30 years old when his first solo album hit and he released albums at a pace in the late 70’s that suggested he wanted to strike while the iron was hot. As a veteran of the music business, perhaps James knew how fickle fame and success could be and he didn’t want to waste any time. His next two albums, “Fire It Up” and “Garden Of Love”, may have suffered from that frenetic pace. They both did worse than his first two albums and the material was definitely not as strong. As a Rick James fan, I still have songs that I bump from those two albums, but, “Garden Of Love” only reached #83 on the pop charts and “Fire It Up” hit #34 after his first two albums cracked the top 20. I don’t think I am being dramatic to say that “Street Songs” was an important album in Rick James’ career. If this album had bombed, he may have faded away. Well, Rick James did just the opposite. “Street Songs” became James’ best selling album (triple platinum) and his best charting album ( #1 R&B/ #3 pop). The lead single was the uptempo funk jam “Give It To Me Baby”. That song topped the R&B charts and cracked the top 40 pop charts. The album’s second single, “Super Freak”, was James’ biggest crossover hit as it climbed all the way to #16 on the pop charts. “Ghetto Life” and his iconic duet with Teena Marie, “Fire And Desire”, were the other singles from this album and both are amazing records. At 33 years old, Rick James was back at the top of the game. He is a true legend as he helped shape late 70’s/early 80’s funk in the post P-Funk era. He also kept Motown/Gordy relevant at a time when the label was transitioning from its 60’s and 70’s stars to a new generation of artists. Today, Rick James may be best known to some for a Dave Chapelle skit, but, he is a true musical legend. The funk was plentiful in 1981 & in almost every home I went (Mom's, Dad's, cousins, friends) was the #greatalbum "Street Songs" by Rick James. I was enthralled by the thigh high red boots, the tight black leather & the white bass he wore on the cover. Before Bobby Brown, Rick James was the O.G. "bad boy of R&B". Even tho he was too old for me to "like" like, he had my attention. I already loved him from "Mary Jane" & "You and I" (my sister Lesa sang "Dreammaker" every chance she'd get so I heard that one A LOT too) but there was something extra special about "Street Songs" that the adults dug it, too, despite his "wild" reputation. I kept hearing how the LP was Rick James' "What's Going On" or "Songs in The Key of Life". As a 12 yr old tho, other than "Ghetto Life" - I didn't get the gravity. I just loved "Give It To Me Baby" & "Super Freak", which even had a video on Casey Kasem's "America's Top 10" & (eventually) MTV. Then Black radio helped turn "Fire & Desire" w/ Teena Marie into THE slow jam Duet Of The Decade, making me love "Street Songs" even more. But mostly, I needle dropped the hits & skipped the rest. Today, I listened to every track & wow, yes, this LP is James' masterpiece. Not only is it musically rich, I hear now on "Ghetto Life" and "Below The Funk (Pass The J)" how James sings about growing up rough in Buffalo, NY & how the poverty & ills there were/are systemic. All told thru his passionate, full-voice vocals, knowing lyrics & and unforgettably stinging guitar riffs. Then there's the reggae-inflected (and sadly, still relevant) "Mr. Policeman", w/stark, effective harmonica licks from Stevie Wonder weaved into James' sophisticated horn arrangements. "Call Me Up" is a brilliant mix of phone sounds, voices, horns, rock guitar, funky bass & percussion, while the lush sax n strings on "Make Love To Me" (some timpani too!) show off how James expanded his & the Stone City Band's sound to new & impressive levels. Even tho James' professional & personal life after the zenith of "Street Songs" was a rollercoaster, this LP remains unassailable & a lasting testament to his "punk funk" greatness. #rickjames #streetsongs #dailydevotional

#RickJames 👑🎤🎸🎶🎼🎬🎥📺, born February 1st, 1948, was a legendary Black American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Born and raised in #Buffalo, New York, James began his musical career in his teen years. James deserted to #Toronto, Canada, to avoid being drafted in 1964 he formed the rock band the Mynah Birds, who eventually sh0 igned a recording deal with #MotownRecords James' career was halted after being sent to prison desertion charges. After being released, James moved to California, where he started a variety of rock and funk groups in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He found success after signing with Motown's #GordyRecords, releasing the album Come Get It! in 1978, which produced the hits "You & I" and #MaryJane. In 1981, James released his most successful album, #StreetSongs, which included career-defining hits such as #GiveIttoMeBaby and #SuperFreak, the latter song becoming his biggest crossover single, mixing elements of funk, disco, rock and new wave. James was also known for his soulful ballads such as "Fire & Desire" and #EbonyEyes. In addition, James also had a successful career as a songwriter and producer for other artists, including #TeenaMarie, the Mary Jane Girls, the Temptations, Eddie Murphy and #SmokeyRobinson. James' mainstream success had peaked with the release of his album #Glow in 1985 and his appearance on the popular TV show, The A-Team. After a hiatus & addiction issues, James's career returned to mainstream pop culture after he appeared in an episode of iconic #ChappellesShow. This resulted in not only the legendary skit but renewed interest in his music, and that year, he returned to perform on the road.
