Lunch at Pedrin’s Dairy Bar in North Adams, Massachusetts (“Home of the Fish Fry”). We grabbed a picnic table at this seasonal seafood stand and ordered an herby tuna melt, whole fried clams, overly mayonnaise-y coleslaw (the best kind), a towering pile of delicate onion rings, and the famous “fish fry” — a long flaky white fish fillet served in a hot dog bun. You can and should spread tartar sauce over the top. It’s absurd. We’ll be back.
If you’re ever traveling on Route 550 in New Mexico between Albuquerque and Colorado or Utah make it your business to stop at Chaco Cafe in the Phillips 66 gas station in Cuba. An excellent lunch from Umamicue at Spilt Milk. Located in the back kitchen of a cool cocktail lounge (I did do some serious drinking on this visit), Umamicue serves bbq with an Asian twist. We ordered their umami beef sandwich, the smoked brisket egg rolls, and the smashed cucumber salad. I can't remember the last time I was this impressed with a meal. The sandwich was smoked chuck, au jus, and giardiniera on banh mi bread. Tasted like an upscale version of a Chicago Italian Beef. The egg rolls were filled with juicy smoked brisket, glass noodles, and veggies. One of the best things I've eaten all year. Lastly, the cucumber salad was a refreshing side dish made with sesame and chili flakes. It appears that the best Indian restaurant in the Southwest is in an old roadside diner at a truck stop along I-10 in Deming NM where the window art reads “Indian Buffet and Cuising” (not cuisine, not cruising …somewhere in between). We had dinner and were so impressed we went back to Punjabi Indian Restaurant for breakfast. The best chai I’ve ever had in my whole life and my first aloo parantha - an Indian breakfast entree that’s basically a savory Indian-spiced crepe. Rice pudding both meals. Delicious. #roadfood

So, who loves food? 🙋♀️Eddy especially loves "tasty" food. Tasty means herbs, spices, and sauces, and if it is cooked over wood or coals, that is even better. We haven't shared as much food as we used to, so here was our dinner tonight. Steak 🥩: Super tender (but was a cheap blade roast), marinated 2 hours with chimichurri seasoning (of course I made from scratch), extra fresh cracked pepper, smoked paprika and a light dusting of baking soda (for the tenderizing). Then, hibachi cooked over coals to medium rare (how we like it). Salad 🥗: Romaine lettuce, carrots strips, tomato, green pepper, and diced apple. Topped with homemade croutons (seasoned with parmesan, basil and Italian seasons and of coarse butter) as well as homemade 1000 islands dressing. Latin style rice (like a rice pilaf) rice is fried before water added. Fried onions and mushrooms cooked in butter and garlic with fresh cracked black pepper. Yes, we cook as much as we can from scratch (mainly so we know what is in it, but also the cost is so much less than eating out). This delicious dinner cost about $15 cdn and we will have at least 3 more full meals for both of us with the leftovers (of course we will not just heat them up, we will make something as equally delicious with them (steak burritos or stir fry with veges, steak omlette etc). Just want to encourage you to eat and cook well as you travel or in your home if you are still dreaming of a life like this. We have cooked like this from the beginning 8+ years ago in our van and at parks or the beach as we traveled. Everyone can eat well traveling! I also can not sit in stand too long with my back issues. Therefore, it can not take too long to make. Our hungry group went on a cheesecake smackdown at the actual company factory cafe on the far Northwest side. Stop no. 2 today was a return to Doo Dad’s, a perfect Roadfood seafood place on the side of a road, in a tent, with the seating outside under tarps. The shrimp is fantastic, as were my obviously hand cut and hand battered onion rings. Keith really liked his shrimp and oyster combo. When we were here in September, 2022, it was practically during a monsoon, with a slight break in the downpour long enough to give us time to eat. Fabulous place, about 35 minutes south of Brunswick. Stop no. 7 today was at Schroglo, the sister restaurant of Schroeder’s Market. We shared a pimento cheese smash burger, and a two piece white meat fried chicken meal.
