It is officially tick season and Lu so is easy to check for ticks and so was Ozzie, but how in the world am I going to check for ticks in Pippin’s long, thick, and black fur? They are both on flea and tick preventative but that doesn’t mean ticks can’t get on them and that is what worries me… I also do have spray on tick repellant (it’s safe for dogs and all natural!) but I know there will be times I forget to use it. Grassy Ridge @ Roan Mountain! 5 miles 6,187 elevation . . One of the best hikes to date so far in 2024. We started in Charlotte, NC at 50ish degrees and as we climbed the mountain roads we came upon snow and ice. MERB was geeking out at the romantic feel ! . . We climbed a little under 1K of elevation to reach the top. Most of the trail had 1-3 inches that we steadily hiked in but at the top we measured up to 12 inches in some spots. The wind gusts got up to 40-45 mph! It was a perfectly wild adventure. We felt like we had been transported into a whole other world. 🌎 . . I made a goal this year, to take people hiking, to places they’ve never been before. Today, we weathered the cold, wind, snow, slush, etc. to Roan Mountain. To celebrate Ozzie’s birthday I wanted to do something special. I took Pippin to the mountains for his first time; Ozzie’s favorite place, where he felt the most like the wild dingo dog he was. I wore my Ozzie shirt in his honor on our hike. I let Pippin explore the way I let Ozzie when he was with me. We adventured in the Blue Ridge Mountains together for the first time like Ozzie and I had done many times. We also stayed in an airbnb Ozzie has stayed in 3-4 times and Lulu has stayed in twice. The owner is going to sell it and she offered us to stay one more time before she does; I knew I had to take Pippin to stay at the place I have so many fond memories of Ozzie, so I took her up on it. I will be sure to let Pippin and Lulu walk where Ozzie has walked in the hopes that just maybe they feel him there with them. I know I harp on Ozzie and probably talk about it too much. He is forever my favorite topic and I won’t ever stop talking about him. SB6k day 1 3/24/24 Mounts climbed: Roan high bluff, Roan High Knob, Grassy Ridge Bald Miles 42.66 It was a good first day of hiking after a terrible night of sleep. I absolutely should’ve brought my 20° bag and spent most of last night shivering in my 40° bag in 18° weather. The good news is it was easy to wake up and the day was all about three things One: after Grassy Ridge, bald instead of going back on the AT, I bush whack down the mountain and saved about 3 miles of time which was awesome Two: at one point during the day, I thought I found a shortcut which after a mile and a half led to a dead end with no trespassing signs and no way for me to cut back to the trail, resulting in me losing my lead The rest of the day was a fast road and now I’m camped a little less than I wanted to be, but in a place that will not be windy so that I can actually sleep tonight.
