📅 18-08-2023 | 🇬🇧 Gower, Pembrokeshire NP and St. Davids | 🗣️ The hike on the Gower peninsula was great. In the first photo you will find the Three Cliffs Bay. An absolute must-visit in south Wales. In 1956, Gower was the first area in the UK to be recognized as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This AONB is known for its coastal areas with cliffs, beaches and caves. Put on you walking shoes when visiting this place, because it is slightly hilly. Another nature stop this day was Pembrokeshire Coast NP. This is a beautiful and rugged part of Britain, with stunning scenery and breathtaking views. We visited Newgale Beach. The pebble bank was quite difficult to walk on. Last sightseeing stop this day was St. Davids. This is the smallest town in the UK. We enjoyed visiting this historic city with interesting highlights such as the Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. Saint David, who is named after the city, is the greatest figure in the Welsh sainthood. If you need his address, please DM us and we will provide it for you. + What is Shrove Tuesday? + Shrove Tuesday is the day immediately preceding Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. + Shrove gets its name from the ritual of confessing one's sins before Lent, known as "shriving," that was a tradition in Europe going back to the Middle Ages. When a person receives absolution of their sins by a priest or bishop, one is forgiven for them and released from the guilt of pain that the sins have caused. + An early church tradition during Lent advised abstention from anything killed, and the produce--like milk and eggs--of those animals. In pre-refrigeration days, this meant a lot of food had to be consumed so it wouldn't go bad during the weeks leading up to Easter. So, Shrove Tuesday is also a chance to indulge yourself and use up the foods that weren't allowed in Lent. Giving up foods, but not wasting them. Families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent. + Saint David's hasn't had a Shrove Tuesday celebration in some time. She was the mother of St David, Patron Saint of Wales 🏴 St David’s Cathedral says about her: “Non gave birth to David after Sant, a prince of Ceredigion, forced himself upon her. Her story is of women’s strength and the power to overcome major life challenges through faith and perseverance. She was allegedly raped by a local prince when she was a vulnerable young woman travelling in Wales alone. The birds gather on the trees & then fly off all together. I started en plein air , however the winter sun was dropping having painted the houses ,sky & sea , I clambered inside to the warmth & peered through the window to paint the trees & hedge row . The November damp chill was surrounding me as soon as the sun dropped . Another pilgrimage to the shrine of St.David (erected in 1274-75 to house the relics of St.David) in St.David's Cathedral, in the city of St.David's, in wild west Pembrokeshire. The present-day cathedral (the 'new' cathedral) dating from the late-12th century, replaced the old cathedral (erected by Bernard, the first Norman bishop of St.David's, and dedicated in 1131) which was destroyed in 1182. St.David (c.520-89) founded a monastic settlement here following his arrival from Ireland c.550.
