The final pictures: Sonoran Sentinel, Fiber Arts Sculpture, 2023 I can't tell you how many hours this took, but this wet felted cactus in a Hohokam inspired pot with a needle felted owl is complete. These are some of the pictures included in the submission to the Contemporary Crafts exhibition that I was fortunate enough to be in last year with the Bleached coral reef piece. Hoping this guy gets some love as well. I won't find out until November. Why Sonoran Sentinel? Part of our desert landscape, the Saquaro cactus have always been given human attributes by both indigenous people (the Hohokam were just one group here way before us) and settlers. Saquaro cacti act as guards watching over all of our actions, both the good and the not so great ones. Much like the Pygmy owl that lives inside the ones that have been carved by Gila woodpeckers, they are a part of a group of beings that I call the "Silent Observers". When I first moved to the desert, the cacti with two arms were ones I liked to wave to, in recognition of their reassuring presence in our landscape. This year, we lost many beautiful, and very old, saquaro to a particularly harsh summer. When full of water, they can weigh over a ton. Without water, and during monsoon winds, they can topple over, destroyed. It is heartbreaking when it happens knowing that some of these fellows are over 100 years old. Similarly, Pygmy owls are seeing a decline in populations for the usual reasons (habitat loss, human activities). I guess this piece serves as a reminder that we have to do better. Plain and simple. Do good. Not just in our environmental policies. Not just in how we treat animals and each other. But, let's just lead with "Do Good" in all our actions and take pride in being people who live a solid life filled with kindness, gratitude, hard work, and care.
