Despite the much cooler mornings, greeted with golden hued sunrises softened by feathery mists, we still have a few weeks of hot dry days in front of us. The Autumn Equinox, or Mabon if you follow the old pagan calendar occurs on the 20th March. Only then when the Earth meets the Sun square on before tilting away again will the weather turn distinctly autumnal, with cold nights, red & golden hued leaves and crisp air tanged with woodsmoke. We are moving into the darkest weeks of the year and often we regard the dark as a negative thing. Indeed, I really struggle with the limited daylight. But only, I think, because I’m trying to force myself out of a natural rhythm. It is the season for rest, and reflection, to slow down and look inwards but it is SO hard to do that when you have to go to work and have family to look after and have loads to do. This time of the year is hectic and busy so it is no wonder that we feel exhausted and overwhelmed, forcing ourselves into a frenzy of activity which is counter to nature and the energy of the season. There are some things we can’t change - we can’t abandon our jobs and families and get under the duvet for 3 months - tempting though it is - but it’s worth thinking about the things you can change. Actually now is a great time to reflect on what you need in your life, what changes you would like to make - it’s putting roots down that you can act on when the wheel turns again and the light returns - those intentions can shoot if the roots are deep. So take some time - lock yourself in the bathroom if you have to - and spend some time calmly, quietly on your own, do some breathing exercises, quieten the chatter of ‘must do’ ‘should do’ and listen to your intuition - what do you need, what do you want, what is going to feed your soul going forward ?’ Small moments, micro breaks to get off the merry go round just for a moment can really help to get through the need to hide in a cave - although obviously if you can hide in a cave then go for it - if it’s got heating, a cat and a comfy bed then I’m there!
