In our exhibition, James is depicted by artist Shaun Leonardo. "When considering his legacy, LeBron James’s activist work will be equally weighed alongside his time on the court. Here, the artist focuses on James’s hands. Rather than a portrayal of his hands while charged with the basketball, however, they are depicted while fulfilling another role—that of a different kind of champion. Extracted from a moment during his speech at the opening of his school, James’s hands point to the future, enacting his promise of social change." Incarcerated residents at the D.C. Jail were placed on a 23 hour daily lockdown where all enrichment programs had been canceled, including book lending, to help to stop the spread of COVID-19. Through our partnership with @DCPL, we put Men of Change: Taking it to the Streets, on newly purchased tablets where the incarcerated individuals could read and look at inspiring stories, quotes, and photos of Black men from all eras who found cracks in a system designed to hold them back. Howard Dilworth Woodson was committed to getting his community the services they deserved is an understatement. He is the man behind Deanwood’s first public high school (H.D. Woodson High School) which he fought to bring here, but did not live to see. Mentored by Nannie Helen Burroughs, he was a community architect in every sense of the word and was a leading structural engineer for the Public Buildings Administration. He designed some of the homes in the Deanwood community on 49th St and what is now Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue. Just as the West African griot tradition imbues a storyteller with the responsibility of upholding a culture’s oral history, Ryan Coogler has elevated the stories of the African American community through his absorbing on-screen storytelling. Since penning his first piece of creative writing in college, Coogler has displayed an uncanny ability to marry engrossing storytelling to hard-hitting reality. From early independent films to the record-breaking phenomenon “Black Panther,” Coogler has infused his movies with the energy of black truths and been unafraid to use those truths as a launch pad for brilliance. So, he founded the @KaviBrooklyn (KAVI). The nonprofit offers alternatives to the number of at-risk youths who Gore found himself treating in the ER after they’d become victims of the violence that pervaded their neighborhoods. Through KAVI, Dr. Gore offers group mentoring, teacher training, therapeutic response to victims, leadership camps, conflict de-escalation training, and more. 📣 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: New Outdoor Exhibit! As COVID-19 continues to impact museum visitation, we quickly and creatively reimagined our upcoming exhibition and are proud to announce that Men of Change: Taking it to the Streets will be officially launched February 1, 2021! 🎉 Formerly slated for display inside our museum, the exhibition has been redesigned for installation outdoors in Ward 7's Deanwood neighborhood and will feature the vibrant stories of more than two dozen African American male leaders at a time when optimism and inspiration is needed. ✊🏾 In addition to the Deanwood installation, photographs and quotes from Men of Change will live in the outward-of larger-than-life projections that will illuminate local building façades after dark in various surprise pop-ups. Our goal is to turn a negative into a positive, to create a stunning visual presence of Black male positivity along ordinary pedestrian walkways by bringing this exhibition out from behind closed doors - and into the streets of DC's most historic neighborhoods. 🖤 The SITES traveling exhibition, Men of Change, was made possible through the generous support of the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services (@FordFund). The exhibition will travel to ten cities for three years—its first stop being today, Aug. 17th, at Cincinnati, Ohio’s @freedomcenter. This is a very special project for me as it lands on my 10th anniversary of doing photography.
