🐾 Fallon, NV Shelter Tour! A requirement for the ABVP Practitioner Pathway to Shelter Medicine Specialist (whooo that’s a mouthful 😮💨) is touring different shelters across the country. I have been making a point to visit rural shelters in my area to learn more about their needs and find a way to support their cause. Today, the ACO (animal control officer) was answering phones, running calls, and processing adoptions. Wow! It was an impressive one woman show! It reminded me of why I fell in love with shelter medicine in the first place. The ability to make a big impact with limited resources. This type of work requires you to get creative and think outside of the box to maximize your reach. Tri-County Humane Society is proud to announce that Dr. Deanna Quade is now the shelter’s main veterinarian. Dr. Quade takes over this contract position from Dr. Anne Lottie, who served as the shelter’s vet for about five years. Dr. Quade has a long history with TCHS; before she joined our team as one of our contracted vets, she volunteered her services in our surgery suite. While TCHS is not licensed to do vet care for the public, our shelter has mandated for more than a decade that all our dogs/puppies, cats/kittens, and rabbits are spayed/neutered before their adoptions are completed. That means Dr. Quade is part of a very busy surgery team, made up of staff and volunteer assistants. Dr. Quade attended University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2006. She was in private practice for many years before eventually transitioning to shelter medicine. When asked why she loves being part of #TeamTCHS, she replied: “Tri-County Humane Society does an amazing job ensuring all our animal friends are as comfortable as possible and are well cared for while in the shelter. I am impressed and amazed every day watching the staff handle the animals using their Fear Free Handling training to make possible stressful situations as calm and comforting for the animals as possible. I am very thankful to work with such caring colleagues who go over and above to love all the animals in our care. Having the opportunity to help so many animals, and then see them find forever homes keeps my heart full!” Dr. Quade’s hobbies including spending time with her family, her husband and their two boys; the Quades love to fish, hike, and travel. My foster Betsy is doing so well! She is an active 7 month puppy that has lots of love to give! She was adopted and then returned due to her separation anxiety, but she’s just a lil puppy! She has some hearing impairments that likely aided to training failures in her previous home. We have been working on her leash biting and separation anxiety/anger with her crate. She has been making strides! She is hella food motivated. Is great with people, children (but can be mouthy), dogs, and cats. Would recommend a home without small mammals. Remember my sweet foster girl Bailey that came to the shelter emaciated? Well she went off to Foster on the Spot last week! That is a program our shelter has in place as an adoption trial - you foster the pet for a week to see if they are a good fit for your home and lifestyle. She has been living her best life with the absolute best people and I couldn’t be happier for her. I may or may not have cried hysterical tears of happiness last Thursday. Bailey going home has allowed me to foster a new cutie who has issues we are working on! Meet Betsy, a 6 mo puppy that was returned two months-post adoption for concerns of separation anxiety. Fostering her has allowed me to realize that she is deaf and this explains some of the training failures in her old home. She definitely has significant separation anxiety, so I will be crate training her and using medication as a temporary aid to behavioral modification. One of my favorite dogs was returned from foster today 😢 Indy has been at the shelter since February. She recently went to foster, which made us all so happy, but was unfortunately returned due to being a poor fit for her foster home. She is a high energy gal and her foster worked from home, which was understandably overwhelming. Her foster said she was sweet and would likely do well with another high energy playmate to keep her occupied. Adoption bio: "Indy is the sweetest girl who is eager to please! She loves to play with toys and other dogs, go for walks, and loves a good bone or peanut butter lick mat. She has teenage pup energy, but is eager to learn and current knows sit, stay, and down (lay down). Indy would thrive in a home with another dog for her to play with. She's bouncy, curious, and goofy, but is crate trained and housebroken-- best of both worlds! Indy is friendly to everyone she meets, but her energy can be a bit much for smaller children or less energetic dogs. The last 2 Saturdays I worked at Lifeline’s Healthy Pets free vaccine and microchip clinic. Twice a year in 2 counties of Atlanta, my job does a free vaccine clinic where they also give out free spay/neuter vouchers, free pet supplies such as food samples, cat carriers, litter boxes, donated beds/toys, and other cool finds. Of course I worked the cat van both weekends but there’s tents for dogs as well including a dedicated area for grumpy/reactive dogs. There’s usually food for owners and sometimes other sponsors within the community there to offer additional support or other resources. It’s a very tiring day but it feels nice to know you’re helping the community and at least doing something for animals that might otherwise never receive vet care. Shout out my awesome tech at this past weekend’s event. She told me she wants to be a vet! Hopefully it’s her on my side or the table in a few years 🐾 Peep my smile. **Swipe for before picture! Before and after pictures of a ruptured cheek abscess seen on a feral tomcat that was trapped and brought to @sjanimalshelter by a Good Samaritan. I sedated our friend, clipped and cleaned the heck out of the wound, and freshened the edges before suturing it closed. Injectable antibiotics and pain medication were given, and 10 days later it has healed beautifully! Have I mentioned how much I’ve been enjoying be a shelter veterinarian? What an incredible opportunity to treat these types of cases in animals that otherwise would be left to fend for themselves. Meet the beautiful Ivy. This timid and loyal companion has had a unique start in life. Recently, she was in a frightening situation that resulted in a rapid loss of weight, a dislocated hip, and some minor bumps and bruises. After evaluation by the KSU Shelter med team, she was scheduled for some much needed TLC and FHO surgery to alleviate the pain of her dislocated hip. His name is Cornbread and he is perfect. 🥰 This little man came to the shelter with a permanent little ‘blep’ tongue and I am smitten. He crawled into my vest and slept there for 2 hours. 🤗 He has some clinical signs that might suggest hepatic encephalopathy and his blood work is peculiar. Ultrasound is scheduled for Dec 26. This has been a fun week! I’m two weeks into my first externship at Michigan Humane and I’m having a good time. I’ve been hopping back and forth from the clinic side and the shelter side, getting a feel at what each service provides to the public. One thing they both do is high volume spays and neuters. In the last week, I’ve been quite proficient with surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring and induction, and have definitely improved on my surgical skills. In this last week, I got to do multiple cat neuters, a cat spay, and a dog neuter. I also assisted in several spays and did several neuters last week as well!
