A first time viewing for me, my knowledge of this film was I know the story pretty much, but also from Cher and Christian watching it in Clueless, so much so that when that moment popped I was like “I know this part!” And of course I have watched all the Spartacus tv show from the 2010s, a VERY different beast to this. I enjoyed this one a lot, a classic for a reason - has a big epic scale to it and great performances, though I’ll admit sometimes the 50s/60s style of acting did throw me off a little, it felt very theatrical - and for a movie that seemed pretty tame I was surprised they show a hand being chopped off. There’s not much a Kubrick in this, I don’t really think of him when I think of this film, I can see why people don’t really talk about it when they talk about his films. In the end I probably wouldn’t rush to watch it again, but I’m glad it’s off the watchlist. 8 rebellions /10

Kubrick was only 30 years old when he tackled the massive project as the film required to capture huge, panoramic scenes and landscapes, using a 70mm lens format. This was quite an accomplishment for a young director to handle. Plus, this was also Kubrick’s first colored movie. I saw this movie for the first time a few days ago and I liked it. I loved the soundtrack and the wide shots were amazing. But it did not feel like a Kubrick film.
