What is "Mǫ́lazha" about? Molazha (Child of a Whiteman) weaves three central tales together to tell the story of Richard I. Hardy, commonly known as Rick, against the backdrop of his ancestors. This is a story of survival and resilience. Rick's European ancestors started coming to North America in the 1600s, settling in Nova Scotia as Acadians. Their progeny came to the Mackenzie River District of the NWT in 1851, creating new families and establishing ties to the fur trade. Rick shares stories of family and growing up Metis in the small town of Fort Norman, NWT, and how being Metis coloured his interactions with the Indian, Metis, and White people there. When he was sent to residential school, he was the third generation to attend, following his grandparents and mother. Sexually, physically, and mentally abused over a two-year period, while at a Catholic residence, Rick was only 15 when he was a witness at the criminal proceedings after the perpetrator was caught. He suffered for many decades as a result of what happened to him, and firmly believes that the Catholic church not only knew what was happening to him and the other residents, but also did nothing to protect them. What is "Chasing Fish" about? Chasing Fish was an eight-year-long project and involved extensive archival research, interviews and online searching. In addition to a narrative spanning the years 1945-2022 (plus an overview of life on the lake before then) I collected close to 1000 photos and countless maps, charts and other graphic material. The book is 148 pages long and broken into 7 chapters. It is a fascinating tale of the opening up of Great Slave Lake, a very remote and large body of water in Canada’s Northwest Territories, to commercial fishing. One of our favourite NorthWords Alumni, who beautifully captures Yellowknife with photos and words, Fran Hurcomb, will be at our festival again this year. Fran Hurcomb has been documenting the NWT since she arrived in 1975, both with photographs and through writing. She has seven published books, ranging from children’s books to pictorial histories, all set in the North. In 2020, at the height of Covid, she published her first book of short stories, Breaking Trail, which won the 2021 Whistler Book Award for non-fiction. Her most recent book, Chasing Fish, which was released in late 2022, is an in-depth pictorial history of commercial fishing on Great Slave Lake. My Word document tells me that the previous round was completed almost a full year ago! I follow a lot of artists/artisans on social media, so it can be a little frustrating to see how much slower my writing process is, compared to their constant output! But still, this feels like a big step. I wasn't planning to do this round of editing, but I'm glad I did. Now I feel confident it's ready to send to an agent or a publisher! That's the next BIG step! Deciding which route to try, and then polishing up a synopsis and building a cover letter to do this! Some nail-biting expected in the next few weeks and months! Last year I was a winner of Theo Paphitis #SBS competition for small businesses. In February I went to the annual SBS event held at Birmingham ICC which was packed with other small business owners. It felt surreal to be attending a business event as an invited winner with all these other people with proper businesses. When I think of business people... business women...I think of power suits and stilettos, like The Apprentice, but I live in jodhpurs and wellies! I still struggle to think of myself as a business. I'm just someone who likes to day dream and write stories. But I also do my own PR and marketing, admin, negotiating with agents and illustrators, social media etc associated with the books. I deliver author visits and presentations, attend events and tutor / coach English and creative writing. There's no right way to look to be a business person. Your individuality is what sets your business apart from others. Being an author is hard work! You spend months writing with no pay, hoping that people will buy it when it's published, but with no guarantees. When it is published, the even harder part of letting people know it exists begins. So why do it then? I'm an author because I love stories. I love reading them, experiencing them, being changed by them, sharing them, talking about them and of course, creating them. People need stories. They entertain, educate, enlighten, inspire and challenge us. When readers tell me they've enjoyed my stories, its always a strange but wonderful feeling to know they're out there being chosen and loved. Happy Yorkshire Day everyone! Yorkshire has been very kind to me. I’m not sure I’d have had the career I have had I not been from here. Although my big break came from a Yorkshire woman in a Yorkshire firm sacking me for having a Yorkshire accent. She told me ‘it was better suited to the textile industry where I came from’. But it was a turning point because I wanted to stuff any attempts at future books full of Yorkshire just to spite her. And that worked a treat. I was looking for storylines on the horizon and everything I needed was at my feet. And I never looked back.
