My kids are a big motivation for me doing climate work, they make me feel, quite literally, that I have skin in the game — and also someone I have to answer to for my actions. Kia ora, School Strike 4 Climate is teaming up with a lot of people for this upcoming strike on April 5th. We see climate change as a monumental crisis that will take all of us to stand up to make change happen. This current government has come out swinging against workers, the climate and Māori, and have taken it upon themselves to ignore Palestine and even aid Israel. It's up to all of us to stand up and take the power back. We will bring about action on intersectional climate and social justice issues in Aotearoa. April 5th is a Friday and we will be starting at 12pm. We would love to have speakers from a range of different demographics, unions, Māori, and especially rangatahi. The display we saw at Freyberg is a great lesson. Our young people care deeply about the issues they're facing and are willing to take a stand. We're told that to do your part for democracy, we must vote. Well, that's not really helping is it? Rangatahi are not allowed to vote, even though it's them that will be inheriting the mess we're creating. It's up to us to show the government that we will not take this on our knees. Here’s the story: On 28 Feb, my family went out to do some errands and my dad last saw him at 11.40am. No one was at home for 30 minutes. As they came back home at 12.10pm, Wang Wang was nowhere to be found. We are sure that when we came back home, the gate was shut as it was left to be. There was no way that this old dog could’ve opened the gate and closed it like it was going to take a stroll in the park. He is old, with a timid personality, and honestly quite dumb most of the time, but he’s the best doggo ever. So if you found him or seen anybody posting about him, please PM me or call the number. Here’s the thing, these public demonstrations go way beyond the call of immediate government action. Our kids who can't vote yet have the right to be concerned about their future faced with a climate crisis and a government that keeps backing fossil fuel giants and approvals of climate bomb projects, despite the dire warnings and risks. Today is the School Strike 4 Climate, and the Greens back the decision of students to attend. Peaceful protest is an important part of our democracy and students who show up for the strike will be showing up for their collective future. The #SS4C pledge calls for groups, businesses and individuals to stand with school strikers to oppose public funds being wasted on dirty gas and instead call on the Federal Government to #FundOurFutureNotGas by: 1. Resourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for Country. 2. Funding the creation of secure jobs that fast track solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover. 3. Funding projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030, through expanded public ownership. These are important requests.
