Scenic route today to pick car up 😂 Chesterfield to Mansfield Woodhouse. Thought I’d give myself a challenge and see if I could do the 27km route in 5 1/2 hours (which I did; just). Went through Avenue country park, Grassmoor Country Park then Five Pits Trail to Stainsby Mill. Up to Hardwick Hall (built for the 2nd richest woman in England at the time) and onto Teversal track to Pleasley. The sluice exit on Miller's Pond in Hardwick Park. Ponds were built 'by the 1620s' as Upper and Lower Great Ponds. The exterior of the Mill where the drying floor is. Grain would be dried inside here prior to the milling process if need be, this is assuming that the grain in question needed drying. Of course, the miller would charge extra for this service. Visitors often ask if there used to be a chimney, and although there wasn't a chimney, various tiles on the very top of the roof were raised slightly. These gaps ensured that no chimney was required. When the Mill was renovated in the late 1990's, these gaps were not included. In the last weekend in September, after consistent rain, volunteers arrived to see the Mill Pond at its highest level. The weir cannot divert enough water away so the water ran over both sluices, the one for the Mill controlled by the nut on the wall and the drainage sluice to the left of the first photo. You can see the colour of the water looks like strong tea with a drop of milk! The second photo is the dam of Great Pond in Hardwick Park, the water covering the stone wall and squeezing under the foot bridge. With the water so high we have to let the water wheel turn as diverting the water from Mill Pond could flood the road near the entrance to Hardwick.
