Su color característico proviene de las bajas temperaturas de su superficie (unos 3000 K). Esta estrella tan notable, que es en realidad una estrella binaria, es muy conocida desde la antigüedad; por ejemplo, en el Antiguo Egipto, la salida heliaca de Sirio marcaba la época de las inundaciones del Nilo, y ha estado presente en civilizaciones tan dispares como la griega, la maya y la polinesia. Whirlpool Galaxy 🌀📷🔭 La famosa "galaxia del Remolino" o Messier 51 es una de las galaxias espirales más conspicuas y conocidas del cielo. Esta galaxia de belleza deslumbrante fue uno de los descubrimientos originales de Charles Messier; ya que, dio con ella durante la noche del 13 de octubre de 1773, mientras observaba un cometa, y la describió como "una nebulosa muy tenue y sin estrellas que es difícil de ver". Sin embargo, aquí hay que mencionar que la galaxia "compañera" de "Messier 51" conocida como "Messier 51B", fue descubierta varios años después de la observación de Charles Messier, y para ser más precisos durante la noche de 21 de marzo de 1781, por su amigo y discípulo Pierre Méchain, por lo que se menciona en el catálogo de Messier de 1781, y no antes de esa fecha, de la siguiente manera: "es doble, y cada una tiene un centro brillante, pero que están separados. Las dos "atmósferas" se tocan, siendo una incluso más tenue que la otra". Pero además de la descripción en su copia personal del catálogo, Messier ha añadido un pequeño dibujo, o boceto de las dos "nebulosas", "M51A" y "M51B", cosa extraña; ya que, Charles Messier no solía realizar dibujos demasiado detallados de los objetos celestes que observaba. In 1999 I witnessed the last total solar eclipse of the 20th, the full blacking out of the Sun by the Moon - 8 of us from Dollis Hill (Reinforced) jumping in a people carrier with sleeping blankets and headed to Cornwall in south-west England. We took tripods, a load of cameras, zoom lenses and solar filters, captured some good photos but the most spectacular thing was the atmosphere, the darkness, the birds going silent and an eeriness I can’t explain. I so wish I was in the US today, you’re in for a treat. Btw we came back and went in the recording booth, pressed record with a one mic set up and just made some off the head music. Julemont** Menu Although chef Guido Braeken earned his two stars two years ago, we haven't had the chance to visit his restaurant Julemont** yet. My girl decided it was time and took me out to dinner on my birthday! Last summer, we already had a sneak peek during the Invite event at the Preuvenemint, where we enjoyed a few of Guido's dishes. We knew that he manages to put tons of flavour into every element and we were excited to try his full menu. Arriving at the Castle Wittem estate, the gate opened after we announced ourselves through the intercom. A member of the staff gestured us to our parking spot and led us into the lounge. We started our night with a GT and some bites. These were packed with umami, preparing us for what was to come. In the dining room, we got a table preparation of our last amuse and my girl chose a beautiful bottle of wine to pair with the menu. The first course was hamachi with pear, jalapeño and aguachile. We expected it to be super fresh and vibrant. Although the dish was delicious, the vinaigrette was quite rich, so the freshness of the pear got a bit lost altogether. The John Dory with eel and asparagus that followed was amazing and full on umami. The sauces and oil worked together perfectly. The scallop dish was a culmination of classic culinary skills. The seafood was stuffed with truffle and wrapped in greens. Hazelnut provided a nice crunch together with a perfect pomme soufflé. The broth of Jerusalem artichoke tied the dish together. We loved the red mullet with mango and coconut. The fruit brought some acidity while the mala kept up the umami. Also the main course of lamb was balanced nicely with mint cream. With a stuffed morel and ras el hanout sauce, this was my favourite dish. Nearing the end of the menu, we got to admire the abundant cheese trolley. We each got a personalized selection, presented with a fresh pear compote and amazing grapes. The dessert was wonderfully fresh, with strawberry and rhubarb. Coffee came with classic friandises that were executed exactly right. With these sweets, we concluded our visit at Limburg's newest two starred restaurant. Delightful food with resounding, 'in your face' flavours.

As anyone who has purchased my LGBTQIA+ products will know, you receive a cute little card that was designed a while ago by one of my kids, the main version just says 'Hello' on the front. Zilte*** - Puur Zilte This year's Christmas gift to each other was a dinner at another of Belgium's three starred restaurants. We had been eyeballing it eversince they were rewarded this highest ranking and last weekend it was finally time to visit chef Viki Geunes' Zilte. Before our dinner, we seized the opportunity to explore the astonishing building the restaurant is situated in. It stands out at the small island with its red appearance and curved glass. We could go all the way to the top for an amazing view in daytime. That night we returned and the elevator brought us straight to the restaurant. We were welcomed in an immaculate interior with jazzy music coming from a record player. As aperitif in the lounge, we chose their GT and it came in clean. It was so flavourful there wasn't any need of garnish. The first bites were served and right away we felt that three star level of perfection. Most impressive was the tartelette of turnip tops, finished at the table with lacquered uni. The staff brought us to the dining area where our degustation started. It was amazing! The bread selection already blew my mind. I loved the super crunchy and airy slices, but also the brioche was divine. The dishes were extraordinary. The chef pairs ingredients out of the box and makes them work like no other. Who would serve caviar over roasted chicken, or scallops with veal? Incredibly tasty and perfectly balanced. Our top dish was the tiger shrimp with koshihikari, pandan and vegetarian bottarga. They explained how they prepared papaya, basting it with vegetable garum. The result was spectacular. We were impressed by the plating, with all of these tiny dots of pepper cream placed flawlessly. Not wanting to drink too much, we spread our wine pairing over the course of the degustation. Each time, the staff made suggestions to either go bold or safe. Both ways were amazing and elevated the palate of each dish. Finishing sweet, we got a refreshing rhubarb dish. The chocolate course was glorious with that savoury touch of parsnip. Back in the lounge, we enjoyed our friandises before we strolled back to the hotel. Zilte jumps straight to the top of our list!

Aurora-seeded night clouds can be gorgeous. Sure, we have dozens more massive auroras to share from last night. Still this capture intrigues, displaying a well-structured curtain, blades firing from behind, into, and exploding clouds, other-worldly to experience. Forecasting aurora is a fascinating adventure and @kevinmullett badass. We waited out snow squalls, confidentially expecting a series of small openings through quickly moving clouds. After politely requesting two packed tourist group cars turn off their headlights so we could monitor the sky, one dude mocked us laughing, "What are you gonna do, take pictures of clouds!?" I pointed out faint aurora overhead though the snow, stars in the distance, and direction of weather movement. After a short while, these clowns left to do whatever non-serious people do. We were hot on the data, confident breaks would line up with magnetic conditions and produce substantial, structured aurora in this particular location during a window of time. Yep, for over an hour all hell broke loose (in a good way), bigger auroras than this, and we were the only photographers on the beach. We each shot well over 100 pictures of various mind-farking auroras set in arctic compositions, hiking over a mile wearing spikes along pounding, icy surf. Later I counted 26 tourists who showed after the party was essentially over- actually as we were hiking out. We'll post the giant auroras later. Nikon meets Fujifilm 📸 🫶. That night I drove from Funchal to Canical to photograph this little house there - under the milkyway core. On the way there I had goosebumps because the entire sky was full of stars and you could have stopped every 100 metres to take a photo. The sky was photographed with the Nikon Z7a (UV/IR-Cut Astro mod) and the Nikkor Z35 1.8 and the foreground with the Fujifilm Xh2s and the Fujinon 70-300 - so a joint venture of both cameras. LUNCHING AT SKETCH: THE MEALS (2) While sketch offers "three courses", each course is actually made up of a spread of 5 to 6 dishes, meant to be eaten at will, with each one combining to enhance and synergise all the flavours together. Of the amuse bouche served, I absolutely loved the yuzu foam lobster. Would have dozens of those any day! And their brioche is to die for as well... The starter and main courses were solid but nothing stood out from the other. However, the flavours all blended really well together and it felt like a seamless melody on the tastebuds, which was very harmonic and consistent with each course theme. What really came through for me was the chocolate souffle. It came freshly made, a warm delight of chocolatey gooeyness, interrupted with some chilled, rich chocolate ice cream and a chewy chocolate brownie. Surprisingly, all these chocolate flavours were distinct, drawing you to have more and more until you finished the whole thing.
