Meet Stellenbosch Triennale Trustee Dr Mike Mavura 🎨👨🏫 @mikemavura_ is an independent art curator, cultural strategist and educator. With a PhD in Political Science his work embraces multidisciplinary approaches to think through civics, spaces and design. Mike’s projects cover a spectrum of work; from curatorial projects (Stellenbosch Triennale, Norval Foundation, British Council) to education (Rhodes University, Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, University of Bergen) and external advisory (Prince Claus Fund, ZK/U Centre for Art and Urbanistics). Mike is currently developing Pamurove, a learning site on six hectares of land in Domboshava, Zimbabwe where art and design thinking meets ecology and local agrarian practices.. SOPE Student competition FINALIST: Georgina Theron 📷 @gina.frederika, concurrently studying Commercial Photography at @stellenboschacademy and BA Fine Art at @stellenboschuni, draws inspiration from daily life and relationships. Her work spans various mediums to create personal and intuitive responses to her environment, exploring the delicate, fleeting nature of collective and personal experiences. Interested in the human figure, Gina incorporates interpretations in both recognisable and abstract ways. “Brewing potions, capturing souls and speaking in tongues comes to mind when I hear the word ‘Alchemy’. On the 9th of November, the @stellenboschtriennale hosted an evening in the presence of internationally acclaimed artist @bernisearle. Nuit de Noël (Happy Club), 1963 📍 Drostdy Street Malick Sidibé (1935-2016) was a Malian photographer known for his black-and-white studies of popular culture in the 1960s in Bamako. Sidibé had a long and fruitful career as a photographer in Bamako, Mali, and was a well-known figure in his community. In 1994 he had his first exhibition outside of Mali and received much critical praise for his carefully composed portraits. Sidibé's work has since become well known and renowned on a global scale. Sidibé's photographs document a transitional moment in Malian history, as the country gained its independence from France in 1960. His images capture the exuberance and optimism of the time, as well as the changing fashions and aspirations of the Malian people. Northern Cape Circa 1987 📍 Church Street South African photographer Petrus Cornelius Jacobus "Obie" Oberholzer was born on a small farm outside Pretoria in 1947. He studied graphic design at Stellenbosch University in the late 1960s, and photography at the Bavarian State Institute of Photography in Munich in the early 1970s. He returned to Germany in 1979 for his Master's degree in photography. Since 1987 he has produced 15 coffee table books on his travels and life in Africa, 37 one-man exhibitions in South Africa and 11 in Europe. Oberholzer has a knack for capturing the unexpected crevasses of the everyday in a way that is both visually appealing and thought-provoking. His work is notable for its use of vibrant colours and bold compositions, and has been praised for its off-kilter beauty, originality, and quiet, yet compelling social commentary. For me, the love for her work started in 2018 when I saw her photography for the first time, and after that, her installation at the Stellenbosch Triennale in 2020 (see the 2 images at the end) The exhibition ‘Shrub-let of Old Ayivu’, an exploration of memory, time, and emotion, presented a new body of work focusing on the concept of female genealogy. So erlebten wir hautnah die Arbeit von KünstlerInnen wie @chris_soal oder @suewilliamsonartist in ihrem Atelier, besuchten Ausstellungen von William Kentridge und @michael_armitage_studio und bewunderten natürlich die Weinberge und die Landschaft Südafrikas. Unser Rückblick in Bildern: 1. Auf unserer ausgiebigen Galerientour durch Woodstock (Kapstadt) konnten wir bei @blankprojects eine tolle Einzelschau des 1982 in Kapstadt geborenen und dort lebenden Künstlers @igshaan.adams sehen. Eine tiefgründige Ausstellung, die uns viel Raum zum Nachdenken bot. 2. Am letzten Tag führte uns der Weg von Kapstadt ins Landesinnere nach Stellenbosch zum @rupertmuseum , wo uns die Kuratorin Eliz-Marie Schoonbee durch die Ausstellung „Faces & Figures of 20th century South African Art“ führte. 3. As we look back on this week, we also flash back to earlier this year when after months of work and planning - with an amazing team led by Chief #Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa @khanyi007 - we had the privilege of introducing the @stellenboschtriennale to both media and public, at home and abroad. The Stellenbosch Triennale was the brainchild of the @stellenboschoutdoorturst and extraordinary in terms of its international reach and the extent of #art on show. It shone a light on #african #creativity and art from #Africa but more than anything it was a space and place for #creativity and critical #dialogues to take place.
