Yesterday was a very special day, namely: Oingo Boingo Day. I celebrated it by listening to records of this absolute wonder of a band. I can't even tell you what this band means to me. Picking up this double LP is always an emotional treat. My ultimate favourite tunes are: Insanity (I have legit visions when I listen to this one, I kid you not. I can see a potential in this song, a potential of a live performance that has never been disclosed, it's insane! Or I'm insane... or both!), Spider [!!!!!!!! It's so gorgeous, I'm in a different universe here], War Again (genius lyrics and melody, perfection 👌 from A to Z! Relevant to this day), But of course, "Boingo" as a whole is a masterpiece in itself that no words can describe. I envy everyone going to Las Vegas next week. Sadly, the US is a place out of my reach. And unfortunately it will stay out of my reach forever. If I could, I would be on my way to experience Boingo-Big Mess in flesh. If we're including it with all of the albums by Oingo Boingo (as we should, since this is a Danny Elfman solo record in name only), then this is easily in my top three. There are so many stylistic risks here that Oingo Boingo wouldn't/couldn't do, like the extensive use of drum machines and the keyboards taking a primary role. Elfman's lyrics were also arguably at their peak here, with songs like "Cool City," "Tough As Nails," and "The Last Time" being among his best from a lyrical standpoint. Photo and video dump from Saturday’s @oingoboingoformermembers show in Monterey… another great show where they played a long set of over two hours, including deep cuts such as “New Generation”, “Out of Control”, and “Heard Somebody Cry” as well as the notorious “Wild Sex (In the Working Class)” and “Nasty Habits” (aka “The Simpsons” theme!) back-to-back along with the usual crowd favorites. I was able to get my tall-guy-at-the-rail spot off to the side, which put me at the feet of the great @steve_bartek for most of the show (and I gave him a “we’re not worthy” after he was introduced). Well worth the 2 hour drive to Monterey for the show, as well as some great crate digging at @streetlightrecordssantacruz , @sirenrecordsmonterey and @recycledrecords831 over the weekend, but a special SCREW YOU goes out to the jerk that shoved me out of the way post-show (he was also a big dude) and just grabbed Bartek’s setlist from under his pedal board instead of waiting to ask for it. Oingo Boingo - Dark at the End of the Tunnel on dark green LP. This is a reissue of one of the most special records in Boingo catalogue. As much as I absolutely adore every album by this iconic band, this one has something different in it. If you listen to Boingo, you may know what I'm talking about. There is no other vibe like in here. It's a bit delicate, sophisticated at times. It's quite hard to pick an ultimate tune on this record but I love the following for sure: "Skin", "Long Breakdown", "Run Away", "When they Lights Go Out", "Out of Control" - the high notes Danny can reach here, wtf?! Beautiful band. It is such a dream of mine to see @dannyelfman, @steve_bartek together with Big Mess Band performing some of these beyond belief wonderful songs live on stage here in Europe... maybe some talks and ideas will pop up after Sick New World. Just Another Day of a Boingo girl. These records are extremely important to me (and "So-Lo" but my attempts to find this one on vinyl have been unsuccessful so far. Will continue my research, though). I can't express in any verbal form what perfection Oingo Boingo represents as a band. Such an iconic band... so sad they split paths. I'm very jealous of people in the US. You will be blessed once again with Boingo magic, this time in Las Vegas at Sick New World... this is beyond me. I still struggle to watch clips from Coachella 2022. I have managed to watch only one video - "No One Lives Forever", it's too powerful, too beautiful, too much awesomeness to handle. Danny's voice and looks and everything, I really couldn't trust my ears and couldn't believe my eyes. I would love to experience all this live. And the fact that @dannyelfman put together a mixed set of Boingo, Big Mess stuff and film stuff with orchestra and choir... If they decide to come to Europe, I am ready to drop everything and go. I will write a word or two about each of these iconic records in separate posts (but not today). I'm currently in the "Dark at the End of the Tunnel" mood.
