It’s always a great time getting to work with Nigel (@nigel.davey_filmmaker), without whom we wouldn’t have had some of our main actors, crew or our central location (among many other aspects). It’s a cliche to claim that a location is so integral to the plot that it’s almost a character in it’s own right, but (groan), that’s definitely the case with OWE and the main location Nigel found was beyond perfect and without it we wouldn’t have the fabric of the film which much of the story revolves around and relies on. But, one of my favourite memories of working on Own Worst Enemy, after having first met and worked with Nigel as an actor, was when we tempted him back in front of the camera for a little Cowboy Builders pastiche as part of an assortment of TV shows the main character watches. I was waiting for the official photos from the festival to make this post, so this is probably not gonna be news for the most of you at this point, but yeah, @toni_shortfilm won another award 🤩. We won Hollywood Short Film Festival's ✨ Best of the Fest ✨ award for the best short film of the festival. I'm really not sure what to say about this one other than that we really didn't expect it and, obviously, that we're all super excited about it. This is obviously a huge achievement for all of us who worked on this project. I'm thrilled about it myself. But I must say that I'm specifically really, really happy for my cast and crew from Bosnia. Bosnia is a small country, not necessarily known for film, so for them to be validated for their work on this level, I know that has to mean a lot to them. I would also like to thank the festival organizers both for the award and for their hospitality. They really made us feel at home.

I guess it's never over until it's actually over. I really thought that @toni_shortfilm last film festival screening/recognition would be the one I was writing about in my last post back in November, but as it turns out we're still not done with it because I just got news that we're selected to play at the Hollywood Short Film Festival next month, too. This is actually super cool because I really wanted to show Toni here in LA before its festival run is officially over, and now I can check that off of my bucket list, too 😊. I don't have the screening time/date/location info just yet, but I'll try to keep you updated. Feel free to DM me if you want to attend. 'Toni' just got accept to its first 2024 film festival – we're an official selection at the ✨Hollywood Short Film Festival✨! It's such an exciting and humbling experience to continue to be recognized for our work almost two full years since our premiere in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our screening date/time is not announced yet, but we will keep you posted (look 👀 for the updates in our comments section). What we know right now is that the festival will take place next month and it will be hosted by @lapac_conservatory. - 'Toni' je upravo primljen na svoj prvi filmski festival u 2024 godini – selektovani smo da igramo na ✨Hollywood Short Film Festivalu✨ u 📍Holivudu. Zvuči skoro nestvarno da se već gotovo pune dvije godine od naše premijere u Sarajevu i dalje prikazujemo na festivalima širom svijeta. Zaista nevjerovatan osjećaj na kome smo neizmjerno zahvalni. Another film festival selection, another film festival award nomination 😁. Now, I know that this does't sound very modest of me, but I just can't help myself but to feel super happy and proud of everything we have achieved so far with @toni_shortfilm including this latest recognition (Toni is nominated for the Charlie Chaplin Award for the ✨ Best Narrative Short ✨ at the @blowup.art.film in Chicago, Illinois). I knew I had a powerful story to tell, I knew that it had a potential to draw a strong emotional response/connection from its audience, but you honestly never know how these things will turn out in the end, and especially when you're working on such a small budget as we did, so yeah, I'm super happy about this, and I want to thank once again to everyone who trusted me that we have something special here and helped me make this film. This is for you guys 🫶. That being said, this is also our last film festival of the year, maybe even the last film festival where we'll be acknowledged at. DAY 1 - FRIDAY - (Online): First round of the pitching competition to be held online. I recently spoke for @nezavisnenovine about @toni_shortfilm, the award we won for the best regional film at just-finished @festivalofserbianfantasticfilm in Belgrade, Serbia, and the difference between filmmaking practices here in the States and in Bosnia among other things. The headline is slightly taken out of context – it suggests that I said how it's cheaper to make films in the States than it's in Bosnia, which is of course not true, and it's most definitely not what I said/meant – but it's provocative, so I understand why that was the editor’s choice. I just hope it doesn't create too much controversy in Bosnia. I most definitely wouldn't want to discourage anyone from making their films over there. Filmmaking is always an uphill battle. In Bosnia, in the States, anywhere. Another thing I would like to highlight is that we also made the front page of the Nezavisne Novine's physical print. I thought that was pretty cool. I'm back from @tacomafilmfest and I just have to give it the biggest shout out. Filmmakers, if you haven't heard of this festival before or if you heard of it, but you weren't sure if it's worth of your submission/visit, it is worth it and then some. First of all, I just loved Tacoma. The city is just fantastic. Super artsy, the architecture is amazing (if you're into Victorian style), they have one of the best public transportation systems, so it's so easy to get around if you don't have a car, and there is a ton of super cool breweries, like, literally wherever you go. I mean, one part of the city is literally called the Brewery District. Do I really have to say anything else? 😊 But back to the festival... it's not the biggest or the fanciest festival, but the people who are running it are some of the nicest people I have ever met, the program curation is great, they picked me and my wife from the airport that is almost an hour away from the city (and then they dropped us off at the airport for our flight back last night, too), they also organized a home stay for us, so we didn't have to pay for the hotel accommodations – and our hosts were just the best; huge shout out to Julia and Matt, too – there were parties every day, hiking outings... Also, has anyone heard of the 90s band Seaweed? Wade Neal from Seaweed is their Programming Director. So random 😆 but also pretty neat, too, right? Bottom line is this is now one of my favorite film festivals. Thank you for screening @toni_shortfilm, guys! 💗
I have wonderful news to share. @toni_shortfilm just won its very first award! 🤩 We won the Oskull Award (Koskar in Serbian, from a play on words "koska" = bone and "Oskar" = the Academy Awards' Oscar) for the ✨ Best Regional Film ✨ at just-finished 17th edition of the @festivalofserbianfantasticfilm! I was never too big on awards, but I would lie if I were to say that it didn't feel good when I got news about this one. Much thanks to @tea.jagodic.art for accepting the award on the behalf of the whole Toni team – sadly, I wasn't able to attend this one – and of course, I would also like to thank the festival organizers, their friendly stuff/volunteers, and the jury who recognized our work. Special thanks to people who helped us fundraise money for this project 💗. Fun fact: On the same night we got our Oskull/Koskar, Richard Stanley (Hardware, Color Out of Space) got his, too. I really don't know how long this will last, but I'm definitely gonna enjoy it while it lasts 😊. I just got news that @toni_shortfilm will screen at not one, but two more film festivals! We'll first screen in📍Sremski Karlovci, Serbia at the @karlovcifilmfestival. Although I have never been to this festival before, this kind of has a really special sentimental value for me since I lived in Sremski Karlovci during my senior year of high school 💗. If any of my family and/or friends can make it to this screening, Toni is scheduled to screen on Friday, August 11th at 10:45pm EET at the historic Ilion Palace. Then, about two months later, we're heading up north to📍Tacoma, WA where we will screen at the @tacomafilmfest. This is another film festival from the @moviemakermag's Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World list, so I'm really excited about attending this one. I still don't have the time/date for my screening in Tacoma, but Tacoma Film Festival runs from October 5th to October 12th. I definitely hope to see some of you out there 😊.
